New Beginnings
I opened my eyes, rubbing them as if that was going to help them focus. I lay there thinking to myself that it was bright outside, which meant I must have slept after all. It had been a long, long night with hundreds of scenarios running through my head about how this day was going to unfold. It was finally my birthday. At long last, I was old enough to move into the pack house school. Our pack was the Craven Grayridge pack.
Many packs have different rules but, in our pack, you move in at the age of 17. It is the perfect time as you're expected to ascend with your wolf and the potential to find a mate. You wouldn't want to be going through all that under your parents' roof. You’re able to complete your last year of school there to complete your final semester before deciding whether you want to do further education and learn to become a healer or, if you wanted, you could learn all about the lore of our breed. That way, you could eventually become an elder, a bit like the go to person to understand why you bow to the alpha or why the love for your mate is never ending. A good portion of students will go on to train with the Alpha and his family – a bit like a military school of sorts. Some will take on roles like cooks or clean up crews. Some of the older pack members are assigned roles as ‘guides’ and will help those coming of age, with their transitions etc.
I looked around my half-empty room with excitement and nervousness. I had just the essentials left unpacked, and I hurriedly rolled out of bed because I knew this next chapter of my life was going to be important and I wanted to prove to myself that all I knew I could achieve, would be done.
My name is Emery. I come from a fairly normal family. No dramatic upbringing and, to be honest, we experienced the same standard family life as any normal human. I went to school, tried my luck with rebelling against my parents' rules a few times, got caught.. said sorry.. did it again.. you know the usual teenage girl stuff. I wouldn’t say I was popular, but I had friends in all cliques, so I was never really given much s**t at school. I was, however, fairly smart. I didn’t fail classes and I was always effortlessly in the top percentile for each topic.
Yesterday, I had my last official day of school and today, we are able to start moving our things over to the Gamma Kappa Pi dormitory of the pack. Some of the more ‘well to do’ families might take their kids away for a week or two before they move in but I couldn’t wait, so we just opted for a peaceful family night in. Maybe my last night of peace for a little while as I’d heard that the parties could get wild.
“Silly question, but are you awake” My mum, Beth, whispered through the door. “Hey mom, come on in, I’ve just packed up my last few bits”. Beth walked in with a slightly defeated smile on her face. “Now, don’t look at me like that. We knew this day was coming and you’ve raised me right! So PLEASE don’t worry”. She tried to change the expression on her face, but she looked more like she had an upset stomach, if anything.
“Right, lets get your last bits in the car. Do you at least want to stay for breakfast?” she looked hopeful but not shocked at me turning her down. “Nope, I couldn’t eat a thing and I have a long day of unpacking ahead, so if it’s okay, I’d rather we just got going”, I replied while putting on my battered vans. I went and said goodbye to my dad, who was going to be staying behind to look after my little brother. I wasn't as close to my dad - he'd always wanted a boy to follow in the proud tradition of fighting and defending the pack. It never really bothered me but it certainly fueled my ambition to make him appreciate that I could also continue that tradition.
Less than 10 minutes later, I was sat in the back of our car, watching the family house disappear. 30 minutes away from our destination and we would be there. Close enough to home that I could always go home when I wanted to, but far enough to carve out my own place in the pack.
