THE ACCIDENT
Rain pounded against the windshield with such fury that the city beyond it had become nothing more than blurred lights and distorted shadows. The rhythmic swish of the wipers struggled against the downpour, each sweep swallowed almost immediately by another curtain of water.
Inside the sleek black SUV, silence reigned.
Dr. Adrian Cole leaned back in the rear seat, loosening the knot of his navy-blue tie. His white doctor's coat lay folded neatly beside him, stained only by the exhaustion of another eighteen-hour shift at St. Victoria Medical Center.
At twenty-nine, Adrian was a name every patient trusted and every medical student admired. Newspapers called him the miracle surgeon because he had performed procedures many believed impossible. Parents prayed for him to operate on their children. Wealthy businessmen waited months just to secure an appointment.
Tonight had been no different.
He had just finished saving the life of a six-year-old girl after a complicated emergency surgery.
Yet instead of feeling victorious, he felt strangely uneasy.
His eyes drifted to the rain racing across the tinted window.
"Sir?" his driver, Michael, called from the front seat. "The weather is getting worse. We can stop somewhere until it clears."
Adrian checked the time on his wristwatch.
"No."
"But visibility is poor."
"I have meetings tomorrow morning."
Michael nodded.
"Yes, Doctor."
The vehicle continued through the deserted highway.
Thunder exploded across the night sky.
Lightning illuminated the road for only a heartbeat before darkness swallowed everything once again.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For reasons he couldn't explain, an uncomfortable feeling settled deep inside his chest.
His phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
He frowned before answering.
"Hello?"
Nothing.
Only breathing.
Slow...
Cold...
Watching.
"Who is this?"
Then a distorted voice whispered through the speaker.
"You should have kept your mouth shut."
Adrian sat upright.
"What are you talking about?"
"You saw something you weren't supposed to."
The line went dead.
His heartbeat quickened.
He immediately called the number back.
Switched off.
"What happened, sir?" Michael asked, glancing into the rearview mirror.
"Nothing."
But it wasn't nothing.
Something felt terribly wrong.
Another flash of lightning lit the highway.
For a split second Adrian noticed headlights racing toward them.
Too fast.
Much too fast.
"Michael!"
The driver looked up.
A massive truck was speeding directly into their lane.
"Oh God!"
Michael jerked the steering wheel.
Tyres screamed against the flooded asphalt.
The SUV spun violently.
Everything became chaos.
Metal twisted.
Glass exploded like thousands of tiny knives.
The world flipped upside down.
Adrian's body slammed against the door before darkness swallowed him whole.
---
The rain continued to fall long after the accident.
Emergency sirens pierced the night.
Firefighters struggled to cut through the crushed vehicle.
"The driver has no pulse!"
"What about the passenger?"
"He's still breathing!"
"We're losing him!"
Blood trickled down Adrian's forehead as rescuers carefully pulled him from the wreckage.
His heartbeat weakened.
His breathing slowed.
"Get him into the ambulance!"
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Defibrillator pads were placed on his chest.
"Blood pressure dropping."
"Prepare adrenaline."
The siren screamed into the storm as they rushed toward the nearest trauma center.
The last thing Adrian heard before slipping into darkness was someone shouting,
"Don't let Dr. Adrian Cole die!"
---
Three days later...
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
The sound echoed through the quiet hospital room.
Adrian's fingers twitched.
His eyelids fluttered open.
The ceiling above him was unfamiliar.
Bright white lights burned his eyes.
His head felt as though someone had driven nails into his skull.
He tried to sit up.
Pain exploded through his body.
"Easy!"
A nurse hurried to his bedside.
"Doctor! He's awake!"
Within seconds, physicians rushed into the room.
Someone shined a light into his eyes.
Another checked his pulse.
"Can you hear me?"
Adrian nodded weakly.
"What... happened?"
"You were involved in a serious car accident."
Fragments of broken glass flashed inside his mind.
Rain.
The truck.
Michael.
"My driver..."
Silence filled the room.
The doctor's expression softened.
"I'm sorry."
Adrian stared blankly.
"No..."
"He died at the scene."
His chest tightened.
Michael had worked for him for seven years.
He wasn't just an employee.
He was family.
Before Adrian could process the news, he noticed something strange.
The nurses weren't smiling.
The doctors avoided looking directly at him.
Some whispered among themselves.
One even stepped backward as though afraid.
Why?
A knock sounded.
The atmosphere inside the room instantly changed.
Two uniformed police officers entered.
Behind them walked a tall man in a dark suit.
His posture was straight.
His eyes were sharp.
Every step radiated authority.
He stopped beside Adrian's bed.
"My name is Detective David Lawson."
He placed a leather badge on the bedside table.
"I'm in charge of your investigation."
Adrian frowned.
"Investigation?"
The detective's face remained unreadable.
"You are being investigated for drug trafficking, human trafficking, and money laundering."
For a moment...
The room became completely silent.
Adrian blinked.
Then laughed.
"You've made a mistake."
"I wish we had."
"I save lives."
David slowly opened a thick evidence file.
He spread photographs across the hospital bed.
Young victims rescued from hidden rooms.
Boxes of illegal drugs concealed inside medical equipment.
Financial records.
Hospital documents.
Every page carried one signature.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
Adrian's smile disappeared.
"No..."
His hands trembled.
"I've never seen these before."
"You signed them."
"I don't remember signing anything."
David leaned closer.
"That's convenient."
Adrian looked desperately from one photograph to another.
Nothing.
No memories.
Nothing made sense.
"I swear..."
"I don't remember."
The detective studied him carefully.
Either Adrian was the greatest actor he had ever met...
Or something was very, very wrong.
Another man entered the room.
The chairman of St. Victoria Medical Center.
His expression carried disappointment.
"Dr. Cole..."
Adrian looked up hopefully.
"Sir, tell them this is a misunderstanding."
The chairman sighed.
"The hospital board has suspended your medical license pending the outcome of the investigation."
The words hit harder than the accident itself.
His career.
His reputation.
Everything he had built was crumbling before his eyes.
The chairman turned and left without another word.
The detective gathered the photographs.
"I don't know whether you're innocent or guilty," he said quietly. "But I promise you this—if you are responsible for these crimes, I will make sure you never wear a white coat again."
He walked out.
Night fell.
The hospital corridor became silent.
Unable to sleep, Adrian stared into the darkness, replaying the detective's words.
Drug trafficker.
Human trafficker.
Murderer.
None of it made sense.
His phone, which had been recovered from the accident, suddenly vibrated on the bedside table.
Unknown Number.
With shaking fingers, he answered.
"...Hello?"
A distorted voice whispered,
"If you want to live, don't trust your memories."
Adrian's breath caught.
"The accident wasn't an accident."
Before he could ask another question, the line disconnected.
At that exact moment...
Every light in the hospital went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Footsteps echoed slowly toward his bed.
One...
Two...
Three...
A shadow emerged from the blackness.
A gloved hand held a syringe that glimmered in the faint emergency light.
The figure leaned over Adrian.
A chilling whisper drifted through the darkness.
"Goodbye, Doctor."
