Chapter Fifty-nine Matthew knew that after evidence in chief, Detective Constable Phillip D’Ascenzio would come across to the jury as an excellent witness – confident, polished and convincing. Although Matthew had invited Samantha to attend the trial, he was now regretting it. Walking back into the courtroom, he glanced at the public gallery, and there she was, a bemused smile playing across her face as she gave a tiny wave. He gave a brief nod in reply. At this critical moment in the trial, it would be bad enough for him to ruin the cross-examination, but it would be devastating to also make a fool of himself in front of Samantha.
