Chapter 12

1637 Words
Neffi I walked into my dorm room, expecting to see Taylor and get into another argument over my relationship with Liam; however, when I walked in she walked out. It was the first time since meeting her that she had given me the cold shoulder. I understood that she and Sam were friends and that my coming in between her friend and a guy her friend liked, put her in a terrible situation, so I couldn’t blame her. But at the same time, I did. Mostly because she was truly the only friend that I had at that school. Since coming to Pennsylvania, I had made sure to keep a low profile. I didn’t talk to anybody, expect to say hi when they greeted me, because that was something Americans do a lot when they see a stranger. I didn’t even greet Taylor when we met, she was the one who did most of the talking, and then somehow, we became friends. Now, because of some obsessed selfish b***h, I was losing yet another person who meant something to me and it sucked. “Forget it. You are going to breakfast with your boyfriend and that’s all that matters,” I told myself as I rummaged through my dresser for some undergarments. I wanted to make sure that they were sexy for if Liam and I ended up having s*x again that night. I smiled at the thought of that happening again. I had waited for years just to be in that situation, and now it happened. During the worst year of my life, I finally was able to enter into a relationship with Liam Tondeuse. I was tempted to call my friend Beth back home and tell her the news—then I remembered that I hadn’t spoken to her in months. I hadn’t spoken much to anyone, expect Taylor, who was now mad at me over something that didn’t have anything to do with her. I mean maybe it did on a friendship level, but other than that, it was my business. I thought angrily as I picked out some matching lace undergarments, then slammed my dresser drawer, instantly regretting it. “f**k,” I said, as I shook my hand back and forward trying to calm the pain in my now throbbing finger. Since I wasn’t paying attention, I slammed my hand in my dresser. Luckily, it wasn’t bleeding, but it still hurt like hell. “Are you OK?” I heard Taylor say, startling me. “I’m fine,” I snapped. I didn’t mean to, or maybe I did. I wasn’t really sure about my emotions when it came to her and the whole Sam situation. “Are you sure, because your finger is purple,” she said, staring at my still throbbing finger. “Yes, I’m fine. I just have to get ready for my date,” I said, pushing the pain from my mind, then turning towards my bed. Before I left last night, I had taken all my new clothes out and left them on the bed. The plan had been to come back and put them up. However, due to circumstances beyond my control, I ended up not being able to come back until that moment. “Date? Didn’t you just come back from your date?” She asked, as if she were interrogating me. I could feel a bit of hostility in her tone, but I could tell she was trying to hold it back. “Yes, and now we’re having breakfast in an hour and I need to take a shower,” I said, proudly and excited. I wanted her to ask me how the night went so I could go into details and maybe get some advice from an “expert,” as she called herself, about the situation. Sadly, that didn’t happen. “That’s nice. Enjoy your breakfast,” was all she said, before sitting down on her bed and turning on the television. A huge part of me was ready to turn off the television and confront her about her attitude, but at the last second, I decided against it. Instead, I grabbed my toiletries and headed towards the showers, stomping my feet as I walked. There were other girls in the hall laughing and joking about something that happened to them or someone else last night or two nights ago at the party. Some even whispered about how angry I looked. I have every right to be angry. My so-called friend doesn’t care or wants to know how my night was with the guy I had been in love with for years. Instead, she’s angry at me, as if it’s my fault that Liam doesn’t want anything to do with Sam. I thought as I entered the shower. Like the night I got ready for that party, the room was empty and that same feeling that I had before crept over me. “Is somebody here?” I asked the room and got no response. I sighed, “I must be crazy, of course no one’s here,” I told myself as I entered one of the showers. I then undressed and turned on the water. I stood under the water for a while trying to focus on my upcoming date while thinking about the previous one and how it ended. Sure, we were attacked again by wolves; however, the way it ended was perfect, and worth it. Was it? Was it really worth it? I heard a voice in my head say. It was the same one I had been hearing for the past few days. A woman, probably older if I had to guess, that sounded nothing like me. Of course, I jumped then said, “Who are you and where are you?” while feeling completely crept out. Again the room grew silent. “Yup,” I said, before taking another quick shower, throwing on my undergarments, grabbing my things, then walking as quickly as possible out of that room and back towards mine. When I entered, Taylor was still in the same spot on her bed watching TV and laughing at something that wasn’t funny. “Taylor,” I said, in a voice that didn’t sound like my own. “What?” She said, as she turned towards me. Her voice sounded annoyed until she saw my face, which I assumed screamed of terror. “What happened?” She asked as she got out of bed, then practically ran towards me. It wasn’t that big of a leap, but the way she moved reminded me of the flash moving faster than the speed of sound. Either that or I was just completely terrified. “Did you just teleport?” I asked, for no reason. “No, what’s wrong? What happened? Why do you look like you’ve just seen a ghost?” She asked, searching my face. “Not seen, heard. This might sound crazy, but…,” I stopped, then turned my head, too embarrassed to say what was on my mind. “What?” Taylor asked, still scanning my face as if she were searching for something. “I keep hearing voices,” I whispered, then moved to sit on my bed. “Voices? What kind of voices? Could these be voices of guilt?” She accused, as she followed me. “No, not voices of guilt, I have nothing to feel guilty about, despite what you or your friend might think. You know what mind, I’m just going to finish getting dressed so I can meet Liam,” I said, waving my hand, then rising to my feet. “No Neffi I’m sorry. It’s your relationship, you have the right to date who you want and I should not be so rude about it. I don’t like it, but it’s not my business. That’s between you three. Now tell me about these voices,” she said, with what felt like a sincere apology. A smile filled my face and I began to tell her about the voice and how it all started. She listened with intensity and waited until I was done before speaking, “So let me get this straight, you were attacked by wolves, and a bright light appeared, then you started hearing voices that come and go?” She asked. I shook my head, yes. “Pretty much." Taylor threw her hand in the air, then said, “See, I told you he's bad news. Two dates and wolves are trying to kill you.” “Really?” I asked sarcastically. “I’m sorry, but that’s what it sounds like to me,” she said, not backing down. “Well, all I know is that when I asked who was talking they didn’t answer and I can say that these are two different people,” I admitted. “Really? Two people? So you have two people living in your head?” She teased. “Shut up. I gotta get dressed and meet Liam. “I said as I took off my robe, then started to dress, deciding on some flowery jeans and a nice flowy top. “What’s that on your neck?” She asked, staring at the spot where Liam left his love mark on me. Again I smiled, “Oh well…,”I started. “Save it, I just hope it fades before class tomorrow or you will need a lot of make-up,” she said, as she shook her head. “It probably will. I heal fast, but I should go. I will catch you later?” I said more as a question than a statement. She shook her head, and I grabbed my things and walked out the room, happy that I finally got to clear the air with my friend.
