Chapter 1
Michelle's pov
“Jenna hurry up or we'll be late!” I heard my stepmother's frantic voice calling from the bottom of the stairs, my step sister all but shoved past me while running down.
“I'm coming!” She yelled back repeatedly, “Yeesh, Mom! You don't rush perfection, you know?”
Sasha, my step mother rolled her eyes.
“Gosh, with your genetics you don't need to put too much work,” She slowly raised her eyes until I was in her view, “too bad I can't say the same for others,”
I sighed inwardly, even tonight on our pack's sacred moon when the pack’s mating would take place, she couldn't hold back on the jabs.
“Yeah, Jenna, with Dad's genes you shouldn't have to work so hard,” Not planning on pulling back any punches either.
Sasha’s face reddened, displaying her irritation, Jenna was too busy caking up her face with yet another layer of foundation that all she did was slightly rolling her eyes at my comment.
“Why is it so tense here?” Dad said, stepping into the living room.
Sasha said nothing but shot enough dirty looks at me for my Dad to pull me towards the kitchen and say; “Chelle, try not to cause any problems tonight,”
My jaw clenched instinctively, "Dad maybe you're saying this to the wrong daughter,"
He held my hand tight enough to leave marks, it's like it was so subconscious that he didn't even notice it himself.
"I mean it, Chelle, tonight is very important for Jenna," He insisted.
I pursed my lips, effectively using all of myself to hold back the response that was burning in the back of my throat like hot lead.
Maybe I wouldn't have to share tonight with Jenna at all if they had let me go last time. I turned 18 last year, bought a simple but pretty looking dress after working part-time for months. All of that just for Jenna to come down with a cold and of course my dad reacted like the whole world was collapsing.
"We need to be here for Jenna," he said but she was on life support, "Can't you at least do that?"
In contrast I had to drag myself to the pack clinic once when I was 16, after falling down the stairs and dislocating a leg.
I could hardly forget how my dad had all but rolled his eyes when he saw me wincing and sweating, hopping on one leg.
"Just sleep it off, you're been dramatic." He said while sleeping his morning coffee, and that wasn't an isolated event. Over and over again my dad reminded me that I was not truly his biological daughter.
Yep, my mom had an affair and it was a well kept secret until I turned four. 10 her secret included and became the gossip for Mist Wood pack, everyone had been talking about it. Naturally, you'd think that my dad would give me up during the divorce but he fought for my custody fiercely until it was granted to him and eventually got visitation rights taken away from my Mom.
Everywhere he went pack members would stop him and shower praises on him saying he was a 'real' man, stepping on to take another man's burden when he didn't have to, all the while cutting me bad looks like I was yesterday's trash.
If only they knew that it was a carefully crafted charade.
When he met Sasha, who already had Jenna he was this close to having songs made about him.
It was only when Sasha and Jenna walked into our lives that I began to pick on how badly I was being neglected.
Suddenly he was leaving for work at five in the morning, no he would happily make breakfast for his new family most days settling down to eat and talk, our budget formally tighter than a knot loosened up to get Jenna toys, books and the prettiest dresses that I'd wailed for.
It finally hit me as I got older.
To Dad, keeping me was just his way of spitting at his ex–my Mom.
One of the easiest ways for me to leave this house was by meeting my mate. I hope tonight things finally go my way.
Jenna looked like the Belle of the ball when she walked into the mating ceremony, held in the packhouse grand hall, no surprise. She had a professional stylist and make-up artist hired to prepare her for tonight while I had to stare at my red dress that got uglier every time I looked at it.
With a cup in hand and the social skills of a fish on land I waited for the rest of the night to flop completely before heading home.
That's when someone suddenly bumped into me, I nearly fell but a strong grip caught me mid air.
I gasped as the most intoxicating smell of sandal wood infiltrated my senses and my wolf propped up with sheer excitement screaming; "Mate! mate!!"
My whole body froze up, expecting him to reject me, because of all people, my mate just had the future Alpha of Mistwood pack, Trevor Kluth.
He wouldn't want an Illegitimate child like me ri–
Didn't even get to get the chance to finish that thought before he kissed me HARD. I melted into him, my body knowing just where it belonged.
The look on Jenna's face was to die for, the news reached my dad's ears and he told me that if I really care about my sister then I would reject Trevor since by his own logic Jenna would feel bad because she didn't find her mate that night.
Of course I refused that ridiculous request and 3 years later with Trevor's coronation, I became Luna, the most powerful She Wolf in Mistwood.
We continued to be happy for four more years. That was when it all came crashing down. I was in my second trimester when Trevor tossed a heavy accusation at me.
"Michelle, tell me the truth, whose baby is in your womb?”
