Chapter 5

I didn't stop running until I reached the breeder's quarters-a small, secluded cottage on the edge of the pack. A place which had a reputation for holding the Alpha's mistresses and breeders, and I never in a million years thought that place would end up being my new home, and most definitely not as a breeder. As soon as I entered the cottage, I saw a number of other women, too-all pregnant or with small babies who looked at me both with curiosity and sympathy. I knew that I was in for a hard time. A woman introduced herself as the head breeder and led me to my room. It was small and plain, only containing one single bed and a small table. I couldn't help but feel sad at how far I'd fallen. The head breeder continued to drone on and on-what I was and wasn't to do. I wasn't to leave the quarters at any time unless summoned by the Alpha. I wasn't to do anything but concentrate on my pregnancy and the well-being of my child. I wasn't to have contact with the rest of the pack unless absolutely necessary. A captive in this cottage, one that seemed to have no way out. Yet I knew that I had to be tough, for myself, for my child. Days passed and I got sucked into the routine of daily living. Most days were filled with resting, eating, and actually going to see the pack's healer for my prenatal check-ups. I tried not to think about him, the Alpha, what he said to me, but it stayed locked inside my mind. One day, the head breeder came into my room with a surprise. "The Alpha wants to see you," she said, her tone not letting on whether this was good or bad news. My heart sank. What did he want from me now? I followed the head breeder to the Alpha's chambers, my heart racing with fear. As I entered the Alpha's chambers, he sat behind his desk, his expression unreadable. He motioned for me to draw closer, and I did so, my heart pounding against my chest. "So, breeder," he said, the hint of distaste unmistakable. "I hear you're adjusting well to your new quarters." I nodded, trying to keep my head down. "Yes, Alpha." He leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "I've been thinking. Since you're carrying my child, I want to make sure you're properly taken care of." I felt a surge of fear at his words. What did he have planned for me? He went further to say, "I'm going to assign one of my guards to watch over you at all times, escort you to your prenatal appointments, and make sure that you eat enough and get enough rest." I nodded again, trying to conceal the fear boiling in my heart. This was not what I wanted, since that would mean being under constant guard and at the mercy of his control. The Alpha moved closer, his eyes glinting with malice. "And, breeder? Don't even think about trying to escape. My guards will be keeping a close watch on you. You won't be leaving this pack anytime soon." I felt a shiver run down my spine as he spoke the words. Of course, I was trapped, and there was no way out. I made my way out of the Alpha's chambers, a prisoner in my own life. The guard assigned to me, a tall brooding man by the name of Thane, followed me everywhere, his eyes on me at every turn. I did my best to keep my head down and focus on my pregnancy, but it was hard. The words of the Alpha replayed in my mind all the time, reminding me that to him, I was nothing more than a breeder. With each passing day, I felt like I was losing myself, like I'd lost my mind completely. I wasn't the strong, independent woman anymore; I was just a vessel for the Alpha's child, a means to an end. One day, as I was walking with Thane, I saw a figure standing across the street, staring at me. She was tall and had piercing green eyes and long brown hair that curled everywhere. There was something vaguely familiar about her, though I couldn't quite place her. Thane caught me staring and followed my gaze to the woman. His face darkened, and he moved closer to me. "Don't look at her," he growled. "She's not someone you want to associate with." But I was inquisitive. Who was this woman, and more importantly, why did Thane act like he was afraid of her? As we walked away, I met the woman's eye one more time. She smiled and nodded at me, and in that instant, hope fluttered in my chest. Maybe I had found an ally in this place. Days passed, and the mysterious woman kept popping up in sightings around the pack, but always out of my reach. It was apparent she was watching me, yet Thane was ever present to block my path. One night, I decided to take a chance when Thane was distracted. I slipped away, keeping the woman's trail. She took me through until I reached a small clearing deep in the woods. "Welcome, breeder," she said, her voice low and husky. "I've been waiting for you." I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Who are you?" I asked. "My name is Aria," she replied. "And I'm here to help you." Aria was part of a secret group in the pack, working to overthrow the Alpha's rule that was increasingly tyrannical. She told me I was in a lot of danger, that the Alpha wanted to use me and my child in whatever ways he could. I had a wave of fear wash over me, but also some hope. Maybe, just maybe, this was my route out of this nightmare. Aria handed me a small pouch. "This contains a potion that will protect you and your child. But you must be careful, the Alpha has eyes everywhere." I took the pouch, a feeling of determination rising in my stomach. I was not going to be a prisoner forever. I would fight back. For myself and my child. I let out a deep breath as the weight of Aria's words settled in. I looked around the clearing, making sure we were truly alone. "Aria, how am I supposed to take your word for anything?" I asked in barely a whisper. Aria's face grew somber. "I know it is hard to believe anybody here, but I swear on my life I'm trying to help you. I have seen what the Alpha does to women like us. breeders. He uses us, discards us, and destroys us." I felt a shiver run down my spine. Her words resonated with my deepest fears. "What's in the potion?" I asked, holding the pouch up. "It's a protective charm," Aria said, "it will keep you and your child safe from the Alpha's magic. But you must drink it exactly at midnight, when the moon is highest in the sky." I nodded, tucking the pouch into my dress. Aria looked round the clearing, her eyes flicking from tree to tree. "I must go. But remember, you're not alone. There's some of us out there who care and want to help." Then she, too, seemed to melt into the shadows, leaving me alone in the center of the clearing. I just stood for a long time, my heart pounding against my ribcage. I felt as though I was standing at a crossroads, with no direction ahead. One thing I knew was that I had to make a protection for myself and my child, then drink the potion and go ahead to fight the tyranny of the Alpha.
