Chapter 2

I was still like a statue while Xavion was sitting beside me. His hands are clasped together as he waited for the program to start. I don’t really know why sophomores are supposed to be here. They already attended this last year. What’s the point of being here now? “Are you okay there?” Synne whispered. I turned to her and glared. I would have been feeling better if she didn’t tell me about Xavion’s background. Now, I don’t even know how to react! He’s even talking to me from time to time. And the most important thing is that people are looking my way, gossiping about something which I think is about me and Xavion. God, I hope not! I just want to study and graduate and become one successful businesswoman who made her own empire in pure hard work. I don’t even want to speak, not even to Synne. I feel like Xavion would hear me talking to my friend in a nervous voice. “Are you a freshman?” My whole soul seemed to have left my body when I heard Xavion speaking. Why is he talking to me? It would have been better if he’d just sit there and wait for this to be over without breathing a word to me. That way, the people around us would stop talking. I can only imagine what kind of reputation that man has here to be able to receive this kind of reception with other people. I slowly turned my head to him before nodding. “Y-yeah…” I hate that I am stuttering right. It was just one word, Anjelina. One damn word. His lips were in a thin line before nodding. “You have a long way to go,” he said in a low voice. I narrowed my eyes in confusion. I still don’t understand why he is talking to me right now. Does he usually talk to other people? Because when I saw him in the registrar earlier, he seemed unapproachable. “Damn. Why is his voice so hot?” Synne silently squealed beside me. I pursed my lips and gave her a sharp look before rolling my eyes. I am almost dying in my nerves here and she is spazzing about his handsome baritone? I am starting to question my decision to be her best friend. And we have been friends since primary school. Thankfully, the program started but no one actually listened to what the vice principal is talking about on the stage. He has a powerpoint presentation there about the clubs that will be welcoming most of us. He also put on the map and the different buildings on the campus. Xavion’s phone rang and I wasn’t able to stop myself from looking his way. He let out a heavy sigh and rejected the call before throwing me a glance that left me in a trance. “I’m sorry,” he said silently. “That was someone who loves bothering me.” Someone from his frat maybe? But then again, who am I to even know that? It’s not like we’re close or anything. I just met him now. What made me think that I am actually entitled to know who is calling him? I just looked over because it was a natural reflex for me. Something rang so all of my senses are directed towards it. I just nodded and did not dare to speak anymore. I know I will just stammer and embarrass myself again so I’ll just stop talking. “Here,” Synne handed me a small envelope. She raised her other hand showing me her own envelope too. “What is this?” I asked her. She shrugged and pointed to her other side, pertaining that she only got hers from the other side. “It’s an invitation to a house party.” I narrowed my eyes. “House party?” I asked, confused. “Who throws a house party and invites freshmen?” I read the invitation letter. So apparently, the house party is an annual event hosted by the Student Council as a way to make the freshmen feel welcome to the university. They would probably just rent a house to hold the party and call on the popular seniors in school. “I think it’s going to be fun!” Synne sounded so excited before keeping the invitation inside her bag. “Maybe we can find a boyfriend there!” I rolled my eyes and shook my head. “We’re only freshmen, Synne. Why would we even think of having a boyfriend when we have to work harder to adjust better in the university?” Synne gave me a look before looking over at Xavion. She looked back at me and smirked at me meaningfully. “What are you even thinking?” she hissed. “I have a feeling that Xavion likes you…” I widened my eyes at her. “Are you out of your mind?” I was sure that my face is red because of embarrassment. How could she talk about it while the guy is just beside me? What if he hears it? It’s stupid! She smirked and just shook her head. What the hell? I braved myself to turn to Xavion and saw him staring at the stage intently. Relief rushed through me until he suddenly turned to me making me flustered for being busted on staring at him. I pursed my lips and swallowed hard before averting my gaze. I could hear him smirk and nothing is more embarrassing than this moment. I want the floor to just swallow me whole. This is so embarrassing, Anjelina! “Are you okay?” he asked me. I blinked several times before taking the courage to turn to him. I smiled awkwardly before nodding. “Yeah.” It’s embarrassing how he’s been speaking to me since the moment he sat beside me and I have only answered him one word at most. Yeah. And that first one, I even had to stupidly stutter. Damn. He narrowed his eyes. “Are you sure?” he probed. “You look pale…” Pale? Who wouldn’t be pale if he’s talking like that? I am just relieved that I haven’t fainted yet with his presence overpowering every single one of us in this section. “I’m good,” I uttered, swallowing afterward. “Thank you for asking.” He smiled and nodded before standing up. “Sure. See you around here, Anjelina,” he replied and I was left there in shock and awe at the same time. What the hell just happened? Did he just say my name? Or was I only hallucinating? What is happening here? I don’t understand anything anymore.
