Chapter 1: A Bad Day
ISABELLA
I shuddered as I felt his rough palm grip my wrist, trying to pull me back.
“Let me go!” I yelled, yanking my arm away from him.
“Please Bella, you don't have to do this,” He muttered with pleading eyes, “You know how much this contract means to us.”
I arched my eyebrows, “Us? I can't believe you, Trevor. Even after all I said to you, you still went ahead to—”
“No, you don't understand.”
“Then make me understand!” I snapped, my hands trembling at my sides.
“You need to calm down,” he raked his hands through his hair, “I just couldn't turn down the offer even if I wanted to.”
“Then why drag me into it?” My voice cracked, “You of all people should know how much I detest that man you welcomed in here. What got into you?”
“I know, but–”
“But what, Trevor?”
“You're the best therapist we have at the moment, and he wanted the best.” His eyes filled with concern, “Where on earth are we going to find someone as good as you are?”
I pinched the bridge of my nose, letting out a brief sigh. If it was a different person, I would have agreed to it but not this man, “I'm sorry Trevor, but I can't.”
He stood silent holding his waist with a defeated sigh. I could feel how eager he wanted it but it was against my wish, and I just couldn't do it.
“I'll be taking my leave now,” I said, straightening my dress as I approached the door, “I have some important clients to attend to.”
“I'm sorry Bella, but I'll have to suspend you for now.” He said, gathering the files on his desk.
“What?” my forehead creased, “Where did I go wrong?”
“Enough now. Rebecca will handle it from here. But as for you, I suggest you go home and think carefully about this deal. You're allowing your emotions to get the best of you.
I gasped and he continued, “We both know that it's too valuable to me and our ward, and I can't afford to lose this life-changing opportunity,” He added, leaning into his seat.
“Trev,” I muttered in disbelief, swallowing hard, “You can’t just… You shouldn't do this.”
“Just think about it, Bella,” He said, his eyes void of emotion, “I'll be expecting a better response next time. You may leave now.”
Taking a deep breath, I picked up my bag and gave him a brief nod before walking down the hallway, my heels clicking on the tiled floor.
Leaving the Counselling and Therapy Ward, my eyes narrowed to the thought of Trevor and how desperate he was to please Holden's family.
I didn't believe he'd go as far as suspending me, just to make me agree with him. I would rather stay jobless than work with Jeremy Holden, even after everything he did.
I felt my heart ache because I informed Trevor earlier about who he was and how far he could go just to get what he wanted.
I guess he was blinded by his wealth now.
A few minutes passed and I arrived in my Fiancé's mansion. I'm sure he'd be surprised I came home early, but all I could think of was his warm embrace while I shared the bad news with him.
Walking into the sitting room, I threw my purse over to the couch while heading for a glass of water, then an unfamiliar scent struck my nose.
My brows furrowed as I traced the scent upstairs, leading straight to Henry's room.
Giving it a firm knock, I got no response.
“Henry?” I pushed the door after the second attempt.
However, he was lying on his bed barely naked while covered in a white bedsheet.
“You're home early?” He stuttered, with a creased forehead, “T–tell me, what happened?”
“Is everything alright?” I asked, the tension palpable, “You don't look so good, babe.”
“Of course, I am,” He responded, sweat bulbs rolling down his head.
“Hmm, I knocked twice but… you didn't respond,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
He darted his eyes as he sat silent, his lips in search of words. I had never seen him so unsure of himself. He was always this confident and charming… man.
“Yeah that, I was…,” He shuddered, “Just wait outside babe, I'll be there in a minute.”
My mind flooded with many heart-piercing thoughts as I watched him. I couldn't place my fingers on what I felt, but I just had to trust him.
However, that trust was nipped in the bud when I saw some lingerie slightly covered under his shirt. I felt my stomach churn and a cold shiver ran down my spine.
“Henry?” I muttered, hot tears stinging at the back of my eyes.
I was already broken from Trevor's betrayal, and I thought I could find solace here in his arms but then… It hurts so bad.
“How could you?” My lips trembled, and tears streamed down my eyes. “I tried so hard to love you, but I guess it could never be enough for you.”
“You're getting it all wrong babe.” He kept lying, and my heart ached even more.
“Where is she? Where did you hide her?” I demanded, cutting him as I paced around the room, searching his wardrobe and curtains.
“You need to calm down, Babe. There's no one here.”
“Not another word from you, Henry!” I shot back, my voice tight.
Suddenly, I hear the voice of the home wrecker he brought home. It was a blonde young lady.
“I'm so sorry, Miss,” She said innocently and my heart sank. But my gaze shifted as I noticed another female coming from behind her.
I turned towards her and my eyes widened. Opening my mouth to speak but my words betrayed me.
“We never meant to do this,” she said, “It's just the fact that you… you never wanted to sleep with him until you both were officially married.”
My shoulders slumped and the air around me thickened. I never thought I'd be more heartbroken until I realised that Henry also screwed my best friend, Mia.
To top it all off, Henry had to hit the final nail on my coffin, “She's right, Bell.” He leaned closer to Mia.
“I love you but she has my heart now.” He locked his eyes on hers, “She gave me what you couldn't and you know how much I wanted it. She even brought her friend along so we could have fun.”
My legs trembled at the sound of it, and I felt utterly ashamed. It felt like all my blood had drained and I was just a lifeless being, and as if that wasn't enough, he continued.
“I tried so hard to make you do it, but you were always too religious for me,” His eyes were void of emotions.
“And I'm not ashamed to say this… I've been screwing her since the first day we moved into this mansion,” He added, his voice unwavering.
I couldn't contain the sudden emotion I felt while watching them stand almost naked saying gibberish to me.
Filled with disgust and pain, I bit my lower lip rushing towards him, then suddenly…
WHACK!
My hand sliced through the air, landing with a loud smack on his cheek, and his eyes blazed with fury.
