After I returned, a burning fever took over my body that same night.
The poison from the secret potion spread wildly inside me, dragging my consciousness back and forth between awareness and a deep haze.
Half awake, I heard my bedroom door creak open, followed by the sound of someone stepping inside.
"Ryan..." I thought it was him. I forced his name out through my aching throat, holding onto a trace of hope I didn't even realize I still had.
But instead of him, I heard Laura's cruel laugh. "Don't rush, Sia." She walked over to my bed and looked down at me with a smug expression. "Soon, everything that belongs to you will be mine."
Her icy fingers slid across my neck before suddenly tearing something away. I reached up instinctively, but my hand grasped nothing.
It was the Moonstone necklace Ryan had given me, the necklace that symbolized my future as the Luna of the StoneCreek Pack!
"Give it back!" I roared with every ounce of strength left in me.
Laura only placed the necklace around her own neck.
The soft glow of the Moonstone shone against her pale skin, as if it was deliberately taunting me, the true owner.
"You know what?" She bent closer and whispered into my ear, making sure only the two of us could hear. "The potion I gave you contained Soul-Devourer Grass. That poison won't take your life right away. Instead, it will slowly destroy your spirit, intensify your suffering, and force your wolf soul to awaken."
My eyes widened in shock.
"On the day of the Mate Bonding Ceremony, in front of the entire werewolf community, your berserk wolf will break through its seal. Under the influence of Soul-Devourer Grass, it will lose all control. And I..." Her smile became even more arrogant.
"As the priest's apprentice, I'll have no choice but to step forward and kill your out-of-control wolf soul to save the pack. By then, even if Ryan still cares about you, you'll never be able to become Luna. That position will only belong to me!"
I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms.
Laura picked up another bowl of medicine and moved closer, trying to force it into my mouth. "Come on, be obedient and drink today's potion. This will help you awaken faster."
"Get away from me!" I shoved her away in anger.
The bowl shattered against the floor, and the black potion spilled everywhere. Laura staggered from the impact and fell to the ground, letting out a frightened cry.
"Sia, what are you doing?" Ryan's furious voice suddenly came from the doorway. He saw exactly what was happening, me "pushing" Laura to the ground.
He rushed over in an instant, pulled the fragile-looking Laura into his arms, and nervously examined her. "Are you hurt?"
Laura shook her head, her eyes glistening with tears as she put on a wounded expression. "I'm fine, Alpha Ryan. I was only trying to help Sia drink her medicine. She probably still doesn't believe I'm trying to help her."
My gaze stayed locked on the Moonstone necklace hanging around her neck. With trembling fingers, I pointed at her and said to Ryan, "She took the necklace you gave me!"
Ryan looked toward where I was pointing, and his brows drew together. I thought he would defend me, or at least demand an explanation from Laura.
But instead, he simply waved his hand with impatience. "She's only wearing it for a little while. The Moonstone has a calming effect. Laura has been wearing herself out day and night because of your condition. Her mental power has been heavily drained. You should be more understanding of her."
Seriously? My mind went numb, and a sharp ringing filled my ears.
He had totally forgotten.
When he first gave me this necklace, he held my face gently and promised, "This Moonstone is only worthy of my future Luna. Sia, it belongs to you and you alone."
Those words were still fresh in my memory, yet the man who had spoken them had completely forgotten.
Ryan stared at my pale but unyielding face, and the last trace of patience in his eyes faded away. "Sia, I never thought you'd become this kind of person. Jealous and stubborn. Laura is trying to help you. Why can't you see that?"
I looked at Laura sobbing in his arms, then at the disgust in his eyes whenever he looked at me. Suddenly, I laughed.
I laughed until tears rolled down my cheeks.
I wiped my tears away and looked at both of them, speaking slowly and clearly. "Fine, Ryan. I don't want the necklace anymore, and I won't become your Luna either. Now leave. Both of you, get out!"
