Chapter 1
When Alpha Ryan Nightbloom decided to make me the Luna of the StoneCreek Pack, the entire pack rose up against him.
"Sia hasn't awakened her wolf soul. She's nothing but a useless cripple. What makes her worthy of becoming Luna?"
"Ryan's judgment is awful. Laura, who just came back after studying medicine, is far more suitable than Sia!"
While I stood at the center of everyone's ridicule and scorn, Ryan stepped forward and pulled me behind him, shielding me from their attacks.
"Whether Sia has a wolf soul or not, she is the only mate I'll ever choose."
Yet that very night, Ryan brought me a bowl of a mysterious potion said to awaken my wolf soul and made me drink it.
"I had Laura create this specifically for you. Sia, you need to do your part for our future too."
The instant the potion touched my lips, a scorching heat surged from my throat and spread throughout my entire body.
Something was wrong with this potion. I fought through the pain and reached out to Ryan for help, but he only turned away, unable to face me.
"Don't resist it. This is for everyone's sake. Once Laura cures you, she'll have a reason to remain in the StoneCreek Pack as the priest's apprentice. When your wolf breaks free from its seal, we won't have to listen to anyone's judgment anymore."
But Ryan never imagined that after Lilith broke the seal, the first thing she would do was make me reject him and seek out my true destined mate.
……
The scalding potion poured down my throat, and a searing heat instantly spread through my entire body.
It felt as if my bones were being crushed one by one. The unbearable agony forced me to collapse onto the ground, my body curling up as violent tremors ripped through me.
"Sia!" A flash of panic and concern crossed Ryan Nightbloom's eyes as he rushed forward, reaching out to help me.
"Alpha Ryan, don't fall for her tricks!" Laura Ravenwolf quickly stepped in front of him, blocking his way.
She looked down at me with cold disdain. "This potion is mild. There's no way it could cause this much pain. I think she's just putting on an act to win your sympathy and affection."
No, that wasn't true. Something was wrong with the potion!
I stretched out my hand in desperation, trying to grab Ryan's leg and ask him for help.
But he instinctively stepped back, avoiding me.
A hint of pain flickered in Ryan's eyes, but it was quickly replaced by resolve. He lowered himself beside me, his voice soft and reassuring. "For our future, hold on a little longer, Sia. It'll be over soon."
For our future? Was our future really built on my suffering?
"Only when your wolf is freed from its seal will we be able to stay together without facing the pack's judgment. Our Mate Bonding Ceremony in seven days can only happen as planned after that."
I squeezed my eyes shut, fighting through the pain. Seeing my reaction, Laura's lips curled into a satisfied smile. She placed her hand against my forehead, and a chilling energy suddenly surged into my body, making the torment even worse.
But when she looked at Ryan, her voice became gentle, "I'm using my mental power to soothe her. It'll help ease her pain."
I fought desperately against the agony, forcing every ounce of strength into my broken voice. "Ryan, it hurts so much. She's trying to harm me!"
Ryan's brows furrowed. Instead of helping me, he reached out and held down my struggling body with Laura. "Sia, stop acting out! Be sensible. Don't reject Laura's kindness."
The pain consuming my body tangled with the hopelessness crushing my heart. Slowly, my vision began to blur, and my consciousness slipped away.
In the middle of the chaos, my fingers brushed against the wolf-fang pendant hanging around my neck. It was the first gift Ryan had ever given me. He had put it on me with his own hands and promised that, just like this wolf fang, he would protect me forever.
That night, I dragged my battered body, nearly broken from the pain, to find Ryan with the wolf-fang pendant clutched in my hand. "Ryan, I wasn't lying to you. There's something wrong with Laura. What she learned from that other tribe couldn't have been proper medicine. After drinking her potion, my whole body started hurting. My head hurt the most."
Ryan looked at me without saying a word.
I held the pendant out to him, my voice breaking as tears welled up in my eyes. "Ryan, when you gave me the wolf-fang pendant, you told me you would protect me. You said you'd never let anyone hurt me."
Not even a flicker of emotion crossed Ryan's face. His voice was cold and distant. "What I'm doing right now is protecting you."
His gaze was filled with disappointment. "Sia, you shouldn't be such a weak wolf. You can't even handle the bitterness of a herb? Toughen up. Don't make me regret believing in you."
With that, he turned around and walked back into his room, leaving me standing outside the closed door. I refused to give up and raised my hand, ready to knock again and explain everything.
But before my fingers could touch the door, Laura's voice drifted from inside. "Alpha Ryan, you mustn't give in to her. I swear, once Sia's wolf soul awakens, it will be a once-in-a-century powerful wolf soul! When that happens, your position as Alpha will become unshakable. Those subordinate packs will never dare to challenge you again! Everything I've done is for you and for the future of the StoneCreek Pack!"
My raised hand slowly stopped in midair.
So that was it. Everything was for his Alpha status, for the loyalty of the other wolf packs. My suffering, my feelings, even my life or death, perhaps had never mattered to him.
I staggered back a few steps, and the wolf-fang pendant slipped from my fingers, landing on the floor. I had cherished this pendant more than anything and had never let it suffer even the slightest damage.
But now, staring at the wolf-fang pendant covered in dust beneath my feet, I no longer had the desire to pick it up.
