Chapter 1

441 Words
Carrie packed a bag—enough for a weekend getaway. She wasn’t going on a vacation--just a weekend to rest. Carrie had been working long hours at the office and her friend, Terrie thought Carrie needed some down time. So Carrie reluctantly took the keys from Terrie’s hand and agreed that she would get some rest at her family’s cabin a few hours away for a 4-day weekend. Then Carrie could come back to the office refreshed and ready for the next week’s busy schedule. But what either Carrie or Terrie didn’t know, was that Terrie’s husband, Jim, had just given his best friend, Mike, permission to use the cabin for the weekend for a party too. As Carrie drove up to the cabin, she turned on the radio to get the weather report. From the report, it was supposed to be dangerous conditions with lots of snow in the forecast. Carrie wanted to get to the cabin before the snow began falling. So driving as fast as she could, but still within the speed limit, Carrie was at the cabin within few hours. When Carrie arrived at the cabin, she noticed another car sitting in the driveway. Assuming it was Terrie or her husband’s, Carrie thought nothing of it and grabbed her bags and headed inside. That’s when she got the surprise of her life when she saw a man sleeping in the bed. Carrie screamed, thinking it was an intruder, as the man jumped up out of bed. “What are you doing here?” Carrie asked the man. “Sleeping!” the man said calmly. “I was given permission to use this cabin for the weekend, so I’m afraid you’ll have to go!” Carrie demanded of the man. “Well, I’m afraid I was given the use of this cabin, so it’s you who will have to go.” “I’m not the one who’s leaving!” Carrie said, standing her ground. “Well, neither am I!” the man said as he dialed his best friend’s number. Carrie dialed Terrie’s number and by the time they got off the phone, both Terrie and her husband, Jim, had realized that they each had given their friends the use of the cabin and failed to mention it to either Carrie or Mike. “So, what do we do now?” Carrie asked the man. “Since neither of us is set on leaving, I say we make the best of this mix-up?” So after introducing themselves, Carrie and Mike agreed to compromise to using the cabin for each other’s needs and leave the other in peace.
