THE CALL CAME BEFORE dawn. This couldn’t be good. I shook myself awake and answered, hearing Melissa’s tired voice on the other end of the phone. ‘Hi Simon. Frank just called me. Looks like it’s the Addict Killer again. Another elaborate staging, this time with an alcoholic theme. It’s quite a drive, so I’ll come around to pick you up and we’ll go down there together. I’ll be out front of your apartment in fifteen minutes.’
‘Okay, see you soon,’ I said and hung up. I quickly freshened up, dressed and got myself out front just as Melissa pulled up. I hopped in the car, leaned over and gave her a kiss good morning. She responded with a kiss of her own and one of her bright, beautiful smiles, despite the ungodly hour.
