RIA’S POV
“Kyra, where the hell have you been?” Another male voice called out from behind me, with a smile creased on his face as he approached me. And just when he did, I realized who he was. Matthew, Carlos’s inside man, had helped me get into the pack a while ago.
“I thought I lost you,” He said, grabbing me by the arm with his hands wrapped around my arms and a smile still creased on his face.
I gulped nervously, hoping all of what he was about to do would work as I adjusted the anxious look on my face staring back at the Beta. Whose eyebrows shot up at the scene before him, not knowing what to say or do.
“Say something!” Matthew whispered into my ears through gritted gripping my arms tighter than earlier.
“Uhmmm…good goddess I’d stepped out to get a few bracelets for the coming ball tonight,” I responded, managing a smile as I had one hand placed over my neck trying to ease myself off the tense feeling I was having towards getting caught.
“The ball?” The beta asked, and surprisingly the angry and serious look on his face from earlier soon disappeared as I could see the hint of a smile twisted to the corners of his mouth.
“Yes, the ball,” Matthew cuts in, taking a step forward and having me shoved behind like he was trying to have me protected.
“Our great Alpha had it opened to all women, remember?” He added.
“That's why she's here…,” Mathew said but was cut off by the beta who had his finger up in the air asking that he cease from saying a word.
“Let the young lady speak for herself,” The Beta snapped at him. I swallowed nervously when Matthew had his grip tightened around my arm, making me even more tense that we were both going to get caught.
“Like he’d said,” I began confidently, with my head straightened and my eyes staring directly at the Beta’s.
“I'm here for the ball tonight, and just as I had heard from my other lady friends, that the ball is open to all women,” I continued.
“Last time I checked, I'm a woman and would be honored to be graced with the opportunity of attending,” I added, taking a slight bow with a smile creased on my face.
The Beta for some reason, kept staring at me without a word and then had his gaze taken off me as he rode off.
I heaved a great sigh of relief as I unwrapped my arms from Matthew’s grip, taking in deep breaths.
“We’d both just escaped being killed by Dan, phew!” Matthew said, letting me into his apartment as he had his coat thrown off to the hook by the entrance.
“So that's his name…Dan.” I thought to myself, settling on the couch with my eyes shut, trying to ease myself off the tension I was having a while ago.
“I guess you came in here at the right time,”’ Matthew began, as the sound of a drink being poured into a glass echoed in the room.
“The ball set for tonight happens to be the mating ball of Alpha Zade, where he is set to find his fated mate,” He added.
“But then, she’d have to prove that she's strong enough to be his mate,” Matthew said as he handed out a cup to me, filled with hot steaming coffee. One I hadn't had in years.
“How is she expected to prove that?” I asked cutting it off.
“We'll find that out at the ball, I guess,” He responded, taking more sips of his coffee.
“What happens when she can't?” I asked.
“Easy, another female would be chosen in her place,” He said.
“I see,” I said, nodding at him, as silence fell heavy in the room afterwards.
“All of the necessary information you’d be needing are all in there, documents, files, flash drives,” Matthew continued.
My eyebrows shot up at the sound of that wondering how Zade had made all of such documents and drives kept openly in his office, even knowing how important they all were.
“He had the place fully guarded just in case you’re wondering. But I can get that done, making it possible for you to get into the office,” Matthew said.
“Perfect!” I thought to myself.
**********************
I held onto a tray with my face lowered to the floor dressed as one of the maidens of the house, just like I had done over at Carlos’s mating ball.
My eyes trailed through the guests as they settled in with each guest holding onto a wine glass as they smiled to themselves. The dance floor soon rather than later got flooded with the guests as they danced from one end of the floor to the other. At that moment I thought of it to be the perfect time to sneak out of the midst of everyone.
I walked over to the hallway still holding onto my tray, and then I hurried up the stairs in search of the exact door with a code like Matthew had said. Surprisingly I found no guard by the doors like he’d said making it even easier to walk right through without fear of being caught.
In seconds I’d found the exact hallway he’d described a couple of hours ago as I smiled to myself knowing I’d succeeded in finding Zade’s office.
As I hurried up the stairs with my face lowered and locked to the tray, I’d been too busy in the head reminiscing on all that was going to happen when I had the documents and…
BOOM!!!
“f**k watch it!” A deep angry baritone scowled in front of me. My eyes rose to his and just then I realized who it was. Zade’s Beta…Dan
“s**t!!” I muttered under my breath as the tray in one hand came crashing into the floor causing a loud terrific noise echoing through the walls of the hallway.
“What the f**k are you doing here?” He growled at me.
“I…” I stuttered looking away, not wanting to look him in the eyes, knowing he’d be able to recognize me.
“I said, what are you doing here?” Dan continued.
“I missed my way, I’m sorry, I’ll head back down to the…” I responded.
“Wait, I know you,” He cuts in, as he takes more steps closer to me but then before he can reach for me, I scramble back down the stairs in a hurry and head back into the ballroom hoping to hide amongst the guests.
But just as I’d gotten into the ballroom, my eyes suddenly turned blue almost immediately with my wolf pacing in my head as I stood by the entrance searching through the crowd for what was causing what was happening to me.
“Welcome everyone!” A deep baritone, called out from the other entrance as my eyes snapped up to his, to Alpha Zade who had just walked in, wondering why the sound of his voice made me feel different.
The minute my eyes snapped up to his, he stared back at me and instantly a voice rang in my head.
“Mate!”
“Mate!”
