Chapter thirteen

It wasn't until early morning the next day before Lucian woke up at the hospital. For a brief moment, he remained still, adjusting to the dim light glowing softly from the bedside lamp. He gazed slowly to his sides, Violet was asleep beside the bed, her head resting carefully against his body while one of her hands loosely clutched the blanket near him as if afraid he would disappear. Lucian’s cold expression softened immediately. Not realizing how long he's been unconscious for, but one thing was certain. Violet had stayed with him overnight. He knew from the warmth on the side of the bed where she rested her head. It was an uncomfortable situation, but she still stayed. ‘Mine’ Dimitrius claimed immediately. He could feel it again. Carefully, he lifted his hand and brushed his fingers gently across her cheek. Admiring her features. Soft and beautiful.. Just like that night. His eyes lingered for long on her peaceful face. Even while sleeping, she looked exhausted, her lashes slightly damp from tears she must have cried earlier. A strange feeling of protectiveness settled in his chest. As he shifted slightly to get a better look at her, a sharp pain suddenly shot through his shoulder. Lucian’s jaw clenched instantly as he noticed the stab wound was still there. His golden eyes darkened. Since he had his wolf, shouldn't it had healed? He thought to himself. And then he realized. From the smell of the blood, it was obvious she used a toxin. Winona planned everything from the beginning. Her claws contained poison which wasn't meant for him but for Violet. Lucian dangerously growled. If those poisoned claws had touched Violet, she would’ve died. Unlike werewolves, Violet had no wolf to resist poison or heal rapidly. And Winona knew that. Lucian slowly looked down at the sleeping woman beside him again, his chest tightening painfully. He was glad he took the hit, because the mere thought of Violet dying made something inside him turn violently unstable. ‘Mate’. Dimitrius’ deep voice echoed calmly inside his head. We have to protect her, Dimitrius continued possessively. And Lucian, it was all he cared about right now. Protecting Violet and her kids. As he stroked her hair gently, admiration filled his eyes as he couldn't stop staring at how beautiful she was even in her sleep. Suddenly, Dimitrius alerted him again. Someone is outside. Lucian’s sharp senses immediately expanded. It was beta Zach. Lucian couldn't let him come inside, he didn't want Violet to be disturbed. Before he could enter, Lucian sent him a quick mindlink. ‘Stay outside.’ he ordered. Zach paused, then he replied. ‘The elders are here, Alpha. They insist on seeing you.’ Lucian’s expression hardened instantly. The elders were bad news. And if they see Violet, then things might just get worse. And he didn't want that. He glanced toward Violet, who was still deeply asleep. Then he sent another mindlink ‘Find another ward. I’ll move there temporarily’ Carefully, he removed Violet’s hand from the blanket and slowly slipped out of bed despite the pain in his shoulder. She stirred slightly in her sleep but didn’t wake. And then, he quietly left the room. It wasn't until about an hour later that Violet woke up. For a second, she smiled faintly, remembering Lucian’s warmth beside her. But when she reached toward the bed, it was empty. Panicked crept into her and her eyes flew open instantly. “Lucian?” she called out, facing the bathroom. Since he wasn't in bed, maybe he'd gone to the bathroom. She thought. As Violet waited to get his response, she realized that he wasn't inside. Her breath hitched immediately and she quickly stood from the chair and looked around the ward desperately. What if something happened to him because of the poison? She remembered vividly the doctor telling her about the poison yesterday. And how severe it was. Realization dawned on her and she rushed out of the ward frantically. Nurses stared at her strangely as she hurried through the hallway searching every corner anxiously. “Lucian!” she called until she got to the end of the hallway and finally, she spotted Zach near the elevator. She was instantly relieved and she rushed to him. “Zach!” she called breathlessly. “Where’s Lucian? Is he okay?” she asked, trying not to let him notice how frightened she was. For a second, Zach paused and then he smiled. He never realized how much she cared about Lucian. The warm looks in her eyes were something Lucian always looked forward to. “The Alpha is fine,” he reassured calmly. “He had some important meetings to attend to.” he explained. “He left?” she asked, in a more relaxed tone.. “Yes.” Zach replied, purposely not mentioning that the meeting was happening inside another hospital ward under heavy guard. Violet sighed softly, pressing a hand against her chest. “Thank goodness…” Zach observed her carefully and he said. “You should rest. Alpha Lucian will return soon.” She nodded slowly before heading back to the room. Even now when she knew he was safe, she still couldn't hold herself from glancing toward the door every few minutes. Waiting for him. She blamed herself yesterday when he took the hit for her. This man, who had defended her yesterday, also saved her life. She was totally grateful to him for everything. Violet spent the next hours thinking about him, every time the memory resurfaced, her face burned with embarrassment. Two nights ago, when she was carefully wrapped in his arms throughout the night, they never got to see after that. A while later, the ward door finally opened. Lucian walked in calmly, dressed in fresh black clothes that made him look dangerously handsome. The moment Violet saw him, she stood immediately. “You’re back.” Lucian paused slightly. Now that Dimitrius had returned, everything felt different. He could hear her heartbeat quicken, and could sense her relief. Her emotions and her nervousness were all felt by him. The bond was strong, pulling him in deeply. His gaze darkened slightly. “Were you worried about me?” he raised his hand to her face, caressing it softly while he stared at her hazel eyes. The moment he asked that question, Violet froze. Then her cheeks flushed red in embarrassment. “No!” she denied too quickly. “I—I was just… I didn't want anything to happen to you.” A faint smirk appeared on his lips. Lies. She was lying to him. He could feel it. The sudden raise in her heartbeat. Violet pulled away from him gently, but he held her tightly over his chest. She gasped softly, cuddled in his warmth. His arms wrapped around her waist possessively while he lowered his head closer to hers. “You ran through the hospital looking for me,” he said. “How did you know that?” she asked, eyes widening. Lucian merely stared at her dangerously. Intensely. Because he could feel almost everything now. And right now, he wanted her badly. Dimitrius growled possessively inside him and Lucian tightened his hold unconsciously. Violet immediately noticed the change in his expression and became flustered. “I—I should call the nurse to check your wound,” she tried to flee. Lucian didn’t let her go. Instead, he pulled her even closer until their bodies nearly touched completely. “Lucian…” His eyes dropped slowly to her lips, his eyes moving with desire. And then, he kissed her. She was totally lost, her eyes widened briefly before slowly closing. The kiss went on, deep, warm, and dangerously consuming. He tilted her chin gently while his other hand held her waist firmly against him. Violet’s fingers instinctively gripped his shirt tightly as her knees weakened. And at that moment, everything around them disappeared. Lucian trailed his hands into her blouse, slowly touching her bare body. The connection was insane. He sucked her lips, then moved his hands on her bare body. Nothing could compare to what he felt at the moment. He wanted to take her right there… Until suddenly, a loud ringing noise echoed in the room. Violet jerked slightly in surprise. It was the sound of her mobile phone ringing loudly from the bedside table. Lucian growled softly against her lips in annoyance while Violet pulled back completely breathless and red-faced. The phone continued ringing insistently.
