Chapter Twelve

Lucian sat behind the massive mahogany desk in his office, his sharp golden eyes scanning through the reports before him. The evening had been quiet for once, almost too quiet, and it unsettled him. Then suddenly. He felt it. A pull, stirring inside him uncomfortably. A feeling he hadn't felt in a long time. Danger. The word slammed into his mind like a violent storm, and he froze. A low growl rumbled deep inside him as a familiar voice echoed through his head after years of silence. Violet is in danger. Lucian shot to his feet so fast that the chair behind him crashed onto the floor. “Dimitrius?” he whispered hoarsely. His wolf. His wolf had spoken. For eight long years, Dimitrius had remained silent after the poisoning attack during the Alpha banquet. The poison had nearly destroyed his wolf completely, reducing him to nothing but faint instincts and fragmented emotions. But now, he spoke. And the first thing it warned Lucian about was Violet being in danger. Lucian’s chest tightened violently. “Where is she?” he demanded. “Tell me where Violet is!” But the connection suddenly went silent again. “Dimitrius!” he yelled out in rage. But nothing. No response. It vanished just like a dream. Lucian clenched his fists. Dimitrius went back into silence as though the brief connection had never happened. His mind raced rapidly. Why now? Why was Dimitrius suddenly reacting to Violet? Could it be because he slept with her again? He could still recall that on that night when he was together with her, Dimitrius appeared and he identified her as his mate. The thought unsettled him deeply. Before he could think further, he grabbed his phone immediately. “Zach,” he called, the moment it connected. “Find Violet. Now.” His orders were straightforward and Beta Zach didn’t even question him. “Yes, Alpha.” The line disconnected. Lucian paced the office impatiently while his heart thudded heavily against his chest. Something was wrong. He could feel it. Exactly five minutes later, Zach called back. “She’s at Crescent Moon Hospital.” Lucian’s eyes darkened instantly. “I’m on my way.” Without wasting another second, he stormed out of the office. Inside the speeding black SUV, Lucian sat rigidly while the city lights blurred past the tinted windows. His thoughts remained on only one thing. Violet. And Dimitrius. Why had his wolf awakened because of her? For years, healers had told him his wolf might never recover fully again. Lucian himself had stopped hoping long ago. Yet the moment Violet was in danger… Dimitrius spoke. It has to do with she being his mate. Maybe, it healed his poison somehow. It had been months since he last saw the priest. He was the only one who could tell him about what was going on. Lucian regains his focus on the road and he realized they weren't anywhere near the hospital. His jaw tightened and rage filled him. “Faster,” The driver immediately increased speed.. ~ The moment Lucian arrived at the hospital, in the ward where Violet was, tension filled the air instantly. His sharp gaze landed on Violet. And he carefully studied the scenario in front of him. She was being restrained by two heavily built men while Ethan stood nearby with fury written all over his face. Violet looked pale and terrified. The sight ignited something violent inside Lucian. A dangerous growl escaped him as he strode forward. “Release her.” The two men instinctively stiffened under his terrifying aura. Ethan stepped forward quickly. “Don’t come any closer.” Lucian’s eyes narrowed murderously. “You dare threaten me?” “If you take another step, she gets hurt.” One of the men gripping Violet tightened his hold painfully, causing her to wince. Lucian’s fists clenched. For a second, the entire hallway seemed to freeze under the overwhelming pressure of his Alpha aura. Then suddenly, the ward doors opened. A doctor walked out nervously. “We… we’re sorry,” the doctor announced carefully. “The pup couldn’t be saved.” Silence fell heavily. Then Winona’s loud sobs echoed from inside the room. A few moments later, her father and stepmother rushed into the hallway anxiously. But the moment they saw Violet, their expressions twisted with rage. “You evil girl!” her stepmother screeched immediately. “You killed your sister’s child!” Patricia yelled at her. Violet’s face went pale. “I didn’t do anything.” “Bad luck!” Patricia snapped viciously. “Ever since you were born, nothing good has entered this family!” she declared. Violet wasn't too stunned by her words .She heard worse while growing up and right now, she just wishes it'd stop. Her father’s face darkened with disgust as he pointed angrily at her. “You came back after five years and the first thing you did was to harm your sister. I should’ve sold you into slavery years ago,” he spat cruelly. “Maybe then we would’ve been spared this disaster.” Violet looked like she had been physically struck. Pain filled her eyes instantly. Her lips trembled slightly as she stared at him. “…Am I really your daughter?” she whispered brokenly. The question caused silence for a brief moment, and tears welled in her eyes. “Mother never wronged you when she was alive… So why do you hate me so much?” she asked. Violet wasn't mistaken. Her mother, Avery, served her father with so much love. She heard it all from the maids around the mansion. Alpha George looked away coldly, not wanting to give any emotions away. Lucian’s patience finally snapped and he lunged for Violet. He stepped forward slowly, his deadly gaze fixed on Ethan. “Release Violet,” he ordered. “Or provide proof that she harmed Winona.” Ethan scoffed. “I saw her push Winona by herself. I am a witness!”. Lucian’s expression remained unreadable. “Then show the evidence.” Ethan smirked slightly. “There’s CCTV footage.” He turned toward one of his men. “Go retrieve it” “Too late,” Zach interrupted calmly as he appeared down the hallway holding a flash drive. “There isn't any need for that. I already did.” He said. Lucian’s eyes flickered briefly toward his Beta. Earlier, the moment he heard there was CCTV footage, he had already ordered Zach to retrieve it first. If there was even the slightest chance the footage could be manipulated against Violet, Lucian would not allow it. The footage was quickly displayed before everyone. And the truth became clear instantly. Winona had been the one who aggressively approached Violet first during the argument. She slipped on her own while trying to shove Violet. Violet never touched her. Not at all. Ethan’s face darkened completely. Was he mistaken again? Did she really not do it? But he walked inside and saw Winona on the ground in a pool of blood while Violet didn't do anything to help. Ethan turned to Violet, gesturing for his men to release her. Then, Violet quickly found herself in Lucian's arms as tears rolled silently down her cheeks. He caught her instantly. “I didn’t touch her,” she sobbed painfully. “I swear I didn’t…” Lucian’s expression softened slightly as he held her carefully. “I know.” Violet froze slightly. Her watery eyes lifted toward him in disbelief. “You… believe me?” “I do.” he whispered. “With everything inside me.” Violet stared at him, totally stunned. She hugged him tighter. All her life, she had been blamed for everything, looked down on by Ethan and her family. Even now, Ethan looked more concerned about Winona than the truth. But Lucian, who she'd just met, believed her without question. She couldn't thank him enough, her knees had grown weak from anxiety. Her hands quivered as she clutched his shirt weakly. “Please, take me away from here” she pleaded.. Lucian gently stroked her hair. “It's fine. I will take you home now” And for the first time in a very long time, she felt safe. Lucian held her closely as they turned away, heading towards the exit. But suddenly, the ward door burst open violently. “YOU b***h!” Winona lunged out hysterically, her claws charged viciously toward Violet’s neck. Everything happened too fast. No one expected her. Violet gasped in shock as she saw her charging at her in fury. Her eyes were totally crimson and her huge wolf was ready to eat her raw. Lucian reacted instantly. He spun sharply and pulled Violet behind him just as Winona’s claws slashed forward giving his s kin a rip. A deep wound tore across Lucian’s shoulder. Deep. Rehearsed. Blood splattered instantly across the white hospital floor and everyone was stunned by the scene. Violet’s eyes widened in horror as she yelled his name “Lucian!”.
