Chapter 1: The Shadow in the Mirror
Chapter 1: The Shadow in the Mirror The velvet curtains of the penthouse suite were drawn, blocking out the glittering skyline of the city, but the heavy silence inside was far more suffocating than the darkness. Sophia stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror, her fingers trembling as she traced the cold glass. The reflection staring back at her was a face she had known her entire life, yet tonight, it felt like looking at a stranger. Fine silk wrapped around her shoulders, the scent of expensive damask roses lingered on her skin, and a massive diamond ring weighed heavily on her left ring finger. Everything about this room, this wealth, and this identity belonged to someone else. It belonged to her twin sister, Clara. Only three hours ago, Sophia was living her quiet, ordinary life in a small rented apartment across town, packing up her modest belongings. Then came the frantic knock at the door. Clara had burst in, pale, disheveled, and smelling faintly of rain and iron. She hadn’t offered an explanation—only a desperate plea, a pair of designer heels thrown onto the floor, and a sudden swap of clothes before vanishing into the midnight fog. “Just stay in the penthouse until morning, Sophia,” Clara’s voice still echoed in her mind, sharp and commanding. “Don’t talk to anyone. Don’t answer the door. If Alexander comes back... just act like you’re asleep.” But Clara hadn't returned. And Alexander was already here. The heavy oak doors of the master bedroom creaked open. The sharp, measured sound of footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Sophia froze, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She kept her back turned toward the entrance, clutching the silk robe tightly around her chest. "You're awake," a deep, icy voice cut through the stillness. It was Alexander Vance. Even without turning around, Sophia could feel the overwhelming authority that radiated from him. Alexander was a titan in the business world, a man known for his cold calculation and absolute control. He was Clara’s husband—a marriage that had made headlines across the country as the union of the century. Sophia swallowed hard, trying to keep her breathing steady. "I... couldn't sleep," she whispered, keeping her voice low and soft, hoping the darkness of the room would disguise the subtle difference in her tone. Alexander stopped a few paces behind her. The air grew dense, charged with a tension so thick it was hard to breathe. He didn't come closer, nor did he offer any warmth. "The gala ended an hour ago," Alexander said, his tone devoid of affection. "You left early without telling the security detail. That was careless, Clara." Sophia’s hands clenched into fists within the folds of her robe. Clara. He called her Clara. The deception was working, but the fear was paralyzing. If he realized she wasn't his wife, the consequences would be catastrophic. "I was tired," Sophia lied quietly, staring at his dark silhouette in the mirror's reflection. He was towering, dressed in a tailored black suit, his sharp jawline set in a stern line. His dark eyes were piercing, scanning her reflection with a scrutiny that made her blood run cold. "Tired?" Alexander gave a faint, humorless chuckle. "Or were you avoiding the board members again? Your father’s firm is on the verge of bankruptcy, and your recent expenses aren't helping the family image." Sophia kept her eyes downcast. She knew nothing about Clara’s financial dealings or her interactions with their father. Clara had severed ties with Sophia years ago when she married into the Vance empire, leaving Sophia behind in obscurity while Clara rose to high society. "I don't want to argue tonight, Alexander," Sophia said softly, taking a cautious step toward the balcony doors, trying to create distance between them. Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly in the dim light. He stepped closer, his boots making no sound on the plush rug. He stopped right behind her, close enough for Sophia to feel the heat radiating from his frame. He reached out, his long fingers catching a strand of her dark hair. Sophia instinctively stiffened, holding her breath. "You're quiet tonight," Alexander murmured, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a suspicious edge. "Usually, you would have thrown a glass by now or demanded another black card." "People change," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Alexander paused, his fingers lingering near her shoulder. For a fleeting second, his gaze locked onto hers through the mirror. There was something intense, almost searching, in his eyes—as if he were trying to read a code he couldn't decipher. Before he could say another word, the sharp chime of a phone shattered the silence. Alexander withdrew his hand and pulled his phone from his inner jacket pocket. He glanced at the screen, his expression instantly darkening into something lethal. "Stay here," Alexander commanded, his voice turning to steel. "Do not leave this room." He turned on his heel and walked out, shutting the heavy doors behind him with a firm click. Sophia collapsed against the vanity table, letting out a long, trembling breath. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably. She looked down at Clara’s diamond ring, glittering mockingly under the faint light. Where are you, Clara? Sophia thought, a dreadful feeling settling in the pit of her stomach. What kind of mess have you dragged me into? Suddenly, the phone on the nightstand vibrated violently. Sophia hesitated, then rushed over and picked it up. The screen displayed an unknown, encrypted number. She pressed answer and brought the phone to her ear, remaining completely silent. A muffled, panicked voice whispered through the receiver: "She's dead... The deal is off. They found her body near the docks." The line went dead with a harsh dial tone. Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. The phone slipped from her fingers and tumbled onto the carpet. Her mind went completely blank, the room spinning around her. If Clara was dead... then who was Alexander Vance standing downstairs with? And more importantly... who was Sophia supposed to be now?
