Chapter 24: The Hiding PlaceAsh stayed in the middle of the group as they walked through alleys and yards. She snorted when she realized where Matt was leading them. Slides, swing sets, and jungle gyms gleamed in weak street lights. Matt pointed to the top of a red tube slide.
“That’s our secret place,” he said.
Ash bit her lip to keep from laughing, but Dayna and Kevin giggled.
Ash saw a small brick building about twenty yards away. “This will have to do for now.” Back in her usual role, she led the way to the building, which turned out to be a public restroom.
“They lock those bathrooms up at night,” Jon-Allen said.
“Okay,” Ash said. “Will someone hold the flashlight for me?”
“I will!” Kevin said.
She knelt by the first door she came to and picked the lock in less than two minutes
