Chapter 27: Ash’s Final SecretOn Friday, July 17, they reached Kentucky. One evening as they walked, Ash thought the huge black shapes on the horizon were clouds, but the next day she realized they were mountains. Well, they didn’t have snow on top, so maybe they were just humongous hills, but they looked like mountains to her.
Ash had been pressing forth mercilessly, day and night. Sometimes she carried Kevin on her back. She’d told the others if they could make it to the next state their chances of being discovered would be drastically lowered. As the landscape changed from flat plains to rolling hills, she knew they would have plenty of places to hide.
They were walking through a forest, with Ash at the rear of the group for once. Kevin and Matt raced ahead, playing some kind of game.
