Mabel burst into Ms. Stephanie's office, her face flushed with urgency. "Ma'am, the account officer is here!" she announced, her voice laced with a hint of worry. Ms. Stephanie, phone still pressed to her ear, immediately ended the call. "I'll call you back," she said brusquely before turning her attention to Mabel. "Direct him to my office," she instructed, her tone firm but weary. Mabel hesitated, her eyes wide with concern. "But..." she began to object, but Ms. Stephanie cut her off with a reassuring smile. "It's fine, just leave it to me." With a reluctant nod, Mabel turned and walked away, her expression still clouded with worry. A moment later, a man in a crisp, expensive-looking suit strode into Ms. Stephanie's office. His eyes narrowed as he took in the room, his gaze lingering on Ms. Stephanie before coming to rest on the chair opposite her desk. "Please, sit," Ms. Stephanie offered, her voice smooth and composed. The man's expression remained stern as he took a seat. "Ms. Stephanie Smith," he stated, his voice firm and unfriendly. Ms. Stephanie leaned back in her chair, her eyes never leaving the account officer's face. "Can I help you?" she asked, her tone polite but guarded. The account officer pulled out a folder from his briefcase and slid it across the desk. "You're aware that your loan repayment is overdue, I presume?" he stated, his voice dripping with hostility. Ms. Stephanie's expression remained calm, but a flicker of tension danced in her eyes. "Yes, I'm aware," she replied, her voice even. The account officer's gaze narrowed. "You have less than two weeks to pay the outstanding amount, or your business will be ceased from you." Ms. Stephanie's smile was effortless, but a hint of steel crept into her voice. "I understand the gravity of the situation, but I assure you, I will pay in due time. Perhaps we can discuss an extension?" The account officer's expression turned glacial. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Ms. Smith. You've had ample time to settle your debts. an extension now is quite impossible, you know the implication of this." The bank manager stood up, his expression stern, and bid Stephanie a curt "have a good day" before turning to leave. Stephanie watched him go, her eyes fixed on the door as it closed behind him. She let out a deep sigh and placed her head on her office table, the cool surface a welcome respite from the tension that had been building inside her. As she lay there, lost in thought, her phone rang, shrill and insistent. She didn't move to check who was calling, hoping that the ringing would stop, but it only grew more persistent. Finally, with a sigh, she raised her head and picked up the call. "Hello," she said gruffly, her patience wearing thin. "Good day, Ms. Stephanie," a masculine voice responded, smooth and confident. Stephanie's eyes narrowed. "Who am I speaking with?" she asked, her tone curt. "I have a business proposal for you," the man said, his voice dripping with enthusiasm. Stephanie raised an eyebrow, her interest piqued despite herself. "And who should you be?" she asked, her tone a little softer. "It doesn't matter," the man replied, his voice firm. "If you're interested, meet me at Chez Pierre at 3 pm." Stephanie's eyes widened slightly. Chez Pierre was a luxurious restaurant, the kind of place where business associates met to discuss high-stakes deals. "What day?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Today," the caller replied, his voice crisp. Then, without another word, the line went dead. Stephanie's eyes darted to her expensive wristwatch, her mind racing with possibilities. "It would soon be time," she said to herself, her voice barely above a whisper. She sat up straight, her eyes fixed on the clock on her wall, her mind whirling with anticipation. Stephanie's panic was palpable as she hastily grabbed her bags and rushed out of the office. "That's a long drive," she muttered to herself, her mind racing with anxiety. She quickly walked past her assistant, who looked on with concern, and jumped into her car. Stephanie zoomed off, her heart racing with every passing mile. As she arrived at the agreed destination, she checked the time again, her nerves growing more frayed by the minute. She hesitated to step out of the car, taking a moment to collect herself. Then, she brought out a portable mirror and began to primp, making quick corrections to her makeup. Finally, she emerged from the car, taking in the breathtaking view of the restaurant. The exterior was stunning, with lush greenery and elegant stone façades that seemed to glow in the fading light. Every step she took, she hoped to find a solution to the financial crisis that had been weighing on her. As she entered the restaurant, she was struck by the opulent interior. The high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and plush carpets all seemed to whisper luxury. Stephanie took her seat, and a waiter immediately appeared at her side, but she waved him off, preferring to wait for her host. A young woman, formally dressed, approached Stephanie and said, "Ms. Stephanie, please follow me." Stephanie was led to a luxurious private space, where a man in a tailored suit stood waiting. He smiled warmly and said, "You came earlier than agreed. Please, sit down." As they sat, a waiter arrived with wine glasses and poured a rich, full-bodied wine. The man, who introduced himself as Leonard, began to explain the purpose of their meeting. "You would have to sign a non-disclosure agreement, whatever we discuss doesn't go past this walls." He picked a file from the table and handed it to Stephanie. "What is this?" Stephanie asked. "A non-disclosure agreement so we can proceed," Leonard replied, his stern voice and gaze fixed on Stephanie as she intended to read the contents of the document handed to her. When she seemed to have understood what the document entailed, Mr. Leonard gave her a pen to sign. Once she was done signing, Mr. Leonard began to speak; "I am a representative of a respective body, through proper analysis we are able to determine whom we contact for our dealings. Through our source, best kept secret, I have been permitted to contact you for a project we are about to embark on." Stephanie looked at him questionably as she asked, "What project should that be?" "A scientific discovery," Mr. Leonard answered, handing her more documents. Stephanie spent some minutes going through its context. "You want me to give myself as an object of experimentation," Stephanie raised her head staring at the man in disapproval. "You can get back to me in 48 hours," Mr. Leonard said dismissively. Stephanie took her leave. Stephanie got into her car and began to contemplate the documents that Mr. Leonard had given her. She was still trying to process the information and wasn't sure what to make of it. After a few minutes of sitting in silence, she decided to call her lawyer, Esther. "Esther, I need to see you," Stephanie said, her voice firm and urgent. "Hey, Stephanie! What's going on?" Esther replied, her voice warm and friendly. "I just got out of a meeting with some guy named Mr. Leonard and he gave me these documents to sign. I don't know what to make of them," Stephanie explained. "Okay, slow down. What kind of documents are we talking about?" Esther asked, her tone professional and inquiring. "I'm not entirely sure. He said something about a non-disclosure agreement and a scientific discovery. But I don't know if I should sign anything without talking to you first," Stephanie said. "Absolutely right! Don't sign anything until we've had a chance to review it together. Can you come to my office?" Esther asked. "Yeah, I'll be right there," Stephanie replied. "Great. I'll clear my schedule and we can go over everything together. See you soon," Esther said. Stephanie hung up the phone and started her car. She drove to Esther's office, her mind racing with questions and concerns. When she arrived, Esther greeted her warmly and led her to a conference room. "Okay, let's take a look at these documents," Esther said, her eyes scanning the pages. Stephanie handed her the documents and Esther began to read through them, her expression growing more serious by the minute. "This is a pretty standard non-disclosure agreement," Esther said. "But I want to make sure you understand what you're signing. Can you tell me more about what Mr. Leonard said during your meeting?" Stephanie nodded and began to explain everything that had happened during the meeting. Esther listened intently, her eyes never leaving Stephanie's face. "I don't think you should sign anything until we've done some more research," Esther said. "Can you give me a few days to look into this further?" "I don't have a few days, Esther," Stephanie said, her voice laced with urgency. "Mr. Leonard gave me 48 hours to sign the document. I need to know what it entails and what the benefits are so I can make an informed decision." "I understand," Esther said, her expression sympathetic. "But I still need some time to review the documents and do some research. Can you give me at least 24 hours?" Stephanie hesitated, unsure of what to do. She was torn between her desire to save her business and her need to make an informed decision. "Okay, fine," Stephanie said finally. "But please, Esther, hurry. I don't have much time." "I'll do my best," Esther said. "But I need you to promise me that you won't sign anything until we've had a chance to talk again." "I promise," Stephanie said. "But please, Esther, you have to hurry." Stephanie lay on her bed, exhausted and worried. The day had seemed to drag on forever, with the morning and evening stretching out like rubber bands. She had been staring at the ceiling for what felt like hours, her mind racing with thoughts. Just as she was starting to drift off to sleep, her phone rang, shrill and insistent. Stephanie groggily reached over to her nightstand and picked it up, her voice barely above a whisper. "Who should this be?" she asked, her tone laced with exhaustion. "Leigh's Legacy," the voice on the other end replied. Stephanie's eyes snapped open, her interest piqued. "Leigh's Legacy?" she repeated, her voice a little stronger now. "Yes," the voice confirmed. Stephanie sat up in bed, her heart racing with excitement. "What can I do for you?" she asked, her tone eager. "Your meeting with Mr. Leigh has been rescheduled for tomorrow," the voice said. "If you're not pleased with that time, you can set up another meeting with him." Stephanie's eyes widened in surprise. She had been worried about the meeting with Mr. Leonard, but now it seemed like a lifeline had been thrown her way. "I'm totally good with that," she said, her voice filled with relief. "What time is the meeting?" "Your meeting time with Mr. Leigh is at 11am," the voice replied. Stephanie's heart skipped a beat. She had been hoping for a chance to save her business, and now it seemed like that chance was within her grasp. "OK, thank you," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. As she hung up the phone, Stephanie felt a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in weeks. She lay back in bed, her mind racing with possibilities, and drifted off to sleep. The alarm blared to life, jolting Stephanie out of her slumber. She yawned, stretching her arms above her head, and swung her legs over the side of the bed. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and stood up, padding softly into the restroom to start her morning routine. In no time, she was dressed and ready for the day, her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail and her makeup applied with a light hand. She grabbed her bag and headed out the door, stepping into the elevator that would take her to the ground floor. As the doors opened, she strode out into the bright morning light, her eyes scanning the parking lot for her car. She spotted it quickly and made her way over, unlocking the door with a beep of the key fob. The drive to the office was quick and uneventful, and soon she was pulling into her designated parking spot. She grabbed her bag and stepped out of the car, taking a deep breath to prepare herself for the day ahead. As she walked into the office, Mabel looked up from her desk, a somber expression on her face. "Good morning, Stephanie," she said, her voice subdued. Stephanie nodded curtly, making her way to her office. Mabel followed close behind, a stack of files in her arms. "Here are the reports you asked for," Mabel said, setting the files down on Stephanie's desk. "But I have to warn you, the news isn't good." Stephanie's heart sank as she began to scan the reports. Mabel launched into a detailed explanation of the latest client withdrawals, her voice steady and professional. "...and that's not all," Mabel said, her expression grim. "We've also had several major donors pull their support. It's like they're all jumping ship at once." Stephanie listened in stunned silence, her mind reeling with the implications. She felt like she'd been punched in the gut, all the air sucked out of her. When Mabel finally finished talking, Stephanie sat in stunned silence, her eyes fixed on the reports in front of her. She felt like she was in a nightmare, unable to wake up. Finally, she looked up at Mabel, her voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you, Mabel. That's all for now." Mabel nodded sympathetically and left the office, closing the door behind her. Stephanie sat in distress. Stephanie's impatience got the better of her, and she stood up from her seat, her mind fixed on the meeting with Mr. Leigh. She headed out to her car, her heels clicking on the pavement, and started the engine. As she drove, she felt a sense of determination wash over her. She was going to make the most of this meeting, no matter what. After a short drive, she arrived at a large, imposing building with the words "Leigh's Legacy" emblazoned on the top in bold, silver letters. The building seemed to radiate an aura of power and success, and Stephanie felt a thrill of excitement mixed with a hint of intimidation. She took a deep breath, exhaling slowly as she stepped out of the car and onto the pavement. She walked into the building with confidence, her head held high, and her smile firmly in place. As she approached the receptionist counter, she announced herself clearly, "I am Stephanie Smith, and I have an appointment with Mr. Leigh." Her voice was firm and assertive, and the receptionist looked up from her computer screen with a hint of surprise. "Give me a minute," the receptionist said, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she checked the schedule. After a brief moment, she looked up at Stephanie and said, "Your appointment was scheduled for 11am. You are early." Stephanie nodded, her smile unwavering. "Could I wait?" she asked, her tone polite but firm. The receptionist nodded, gesturing to a comfortable sofa chair in a glass-enclosed room. "Yes, please take a seat over there. Someone will call you when Mr. Leigh is ready to see you." Stephanie walked into the designated waiting area, her eyes taking in the sleek, modern decor. The room was filled with plush chairs and a large, glass coffee table, and the walls were adorned with framed photos of successful business leaders. As she sat down, another woman approached her, a friendly smile on her face. "Can I get you something to drink, Ms. Smith?" she asked. Stephanie hesitated for a moment before responding, "Just tea, please." The woman nodded and disappeared, returning a moment later with a steaming cup of tea. Stephanie took a sip, feeling the warmth spread through her body as she waited for her appointment. Stephanie's mind began to wander as she stared blankly at her cup of tea, left untouched on the table. Memories of past disappointments flooded her thoughts, making her nervous and anxious. She was startled when the woman who had served her tea returned, a warm smile on her face. "Mr. Leigh would love to attend to you now," the woman said, her voice gentle but firm. Stephanie quickly stood up, regulating her breaths as she followed the woman to Mr. Leigh's office. The room was impressive, with sleek, modern furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a stunning view of the city. As they entered, the woman called out, "Sir," and Mr. Leigh gestured for her to leave. "Sit," he demanded, his voice firm but polite. Stephanie obeyed, taking a seat in front of his massive desk. Mr. Leigh spent several minutes staring at her, his eyes analyzing her every feature. Stephanie's eyes lingered around his table uncomfortable under his gaze but tried to maintain her composure. Finally, Mr. Leigh spoke, his voice deep and commanding. "So, Ms. Smith, why would you think I'd be willing to help you?" Stephanie took a deep breath before responding. "You help me save my business, and in return, you get to own 20% of my shares." She spoke confidently, trying to hide her naivety. Mr. Leigh smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Stephanie couldn't help but notice how handsome he was, with his chiseled features and piercing blue eyes. "That's not fair enough," Mr. Leigh said, his gaze piercing deep into her body. "But I can grant it for a request." Stephanie's curiosity was piqued. "And what would that be?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Mr. Leigh passed her a file, which she read silently. Her eyes widened as she realized it was a non-disclosure agreement. She looked up at him, a hint of surprise on her face. "You want me to sign this?" she asked, her voice laced with hesitation. Mr. Leigh nodded, his expression serious. "Yes, I do." Stephanie was taken aback by the request, but she knew she had to make a decision quickly. She thought about her struggling business and the potential benefits of partnering with Mr. Leigh. After a moment of hesitation, she picked up the pen and signed the document. As soon as she signed, Mr. Leigh smiled and said, "You became my bride." Stephanie was shocked and disagreed, but Mr. Leigh added, "That's my condition." He handed her his card and dismissed their conversation. Stephanie left the office, her hands trembling as she grasped the steering wheel her mind racing with frustration. She got into her car and hit the horn button, tears streaming down her face. "I am not going back to Magdalene! Never!" she exclaimed, determined to find another way to save her business.
