Chapter 1
"I get that you idolize me but seriously do you really need to follow everything I do?" a tall dark-haired girl stands beside me as I write down my name for the upcoming presidential election.
"Why not? This is just one of the many ways I can show you that I'm better." I snicker.
"Why don't you switch to something easier, I hear that the drama club has a vacancy for the lead. You should sign up."
"Oh, we both know who’s the drama queen here, I wouldn't wanna deprive you of that honor." Putting the cap on the marker, I look at her perfect slim body. Yes, Emma’s just one of those girls with beautiful round eyes, large lashes, and gorgeous black hair, with only one exception.
"Besides, we all know how much effort you have put in to get the perfect face for people." Smirking, I gesture to her nose and walk away.
Okay, I admit it was a bit mean of me to criticize her on that. It wasn't her fault she broke her nose running down the stairs last summer but the injury wasn't major and she did take that opportunity to redo her flat nose to a pointed one. Now, she's just fabulous from the top to the bottom with her perfect looks, grades, and taste. She is the pure definition of perfection. Her only flaw – insecurity towards me.
"Hey Jake," I call out to Emma's boyfriend as he walks towards her. "Last night was amazing we should do that again sometime," I don't need to turn to see Emma's reaction, I know it very well judging from Jake's uncomfortable smile. Her mouth must be hanging open from the shocking revelation – just what I wanted.
"You signed up for it?" Mia, my best friend since kindergarten walks beside me.
"Yup,"
"Great. What are you doing tonight?"
"No plans… yet" I add, smiling at her. With Mia, however, there's always a plan. Even on the lousiest days, we'd just sit around doing nothing and yet have fun. Somehow even the silence is enjoyable with her.
"Great then. My place?" she jumps
"Need a shower before that. How about seven?"
"Per-fect! Hugh Jackman?"
"How about Henry Cavill?" I follow her out to her teal Ford Focus RS as she takes the key out of her pocket.
"Superman it is then,"
I chortle, punching her lightly, "See you then," and we part ways there.
After a quick shower, I take out the frozen lasagna from the fridge and warm it up. I turn the laptop on and go through the notes I took in the class. My brother, Will, won't be home until evening, so I cook dinner for him and leave him a note on the fridge saying that I'm going to Mia's place. We hardly see each other and that's fine with both of us. With our busy schedule – him running to the hospital and me with college - it's understandable. Nonetheless, we're always there for each other whenever needed. Although he's my stepbrother he never made me feel otherwise and words aren't needed to show how deeply he loves and cares for me. After our parents died, Mia and Will were the ones I relied on. The savings our parents had weren't enough and Will worked extra hours the first two years to support us financially. I took a job at a nearby café for my miscellaneous expenses but when Will became a neurosurgeon, he made me quit it to focus on my studies.
Mia calls me at six-thirty to check up on me and I rush to my room and put on a comfortable t-shirt and washed out trousers and taking out another pair of clothes in case I might stay back at Mia's place and go to the school from there. I pack the books I'll need tomorrow and dash out the door. The sun had set and the lights on the street were all out except one. I run to my car which is parked across the street and just like Mia’s, my car is a Ford Focus RS, only mine is aqua. We bought it together, they were a gift from my father – my step-father. He chose the aqua one for me because he thought of it fitting given my name, Aqua Katherine James.
Halfway across the street, I realized I didn't bring the car key and I dashed back inside to grab it from the drawer by the door, and sprint towards the car again. A horn wheezed through the street as a car advanced me at full speed. The blinding headlights and the ear-pitching sound of the horn stole away any common sense I had and I stood there, frozen. I gape at the car with wide horrified eyes as the car hit me vehemently. I always found it surreal when people flew after the car hit them over in the movies but I did and I smacked against the ground with a thump. It was all black after that.
