Maya is a survivor. As a scholarship student at the elite St. Jude Heights University, she knows her place: in the library, at her three part-time jobs, and far away from the "Royals"-the ultra-rich heirs who run the campus. She has one goal: graduate, get a job, and pull her family out of the slums of Cavite.

Nikolai St. Jude is a predator. As the grandson of the school's founder, he is untouchable, arrogant, and bored. He hates "social climbers" and believes everyone has a price. When a heated encounter at a coffee shop ends with Maya pouring a latte over his expensive shoes,

Nikolai vows to make her life a living hell.

But the Dean has other plans.

To save her scholarship, Maya must tutor the man she despises. To keep his inheritance, Nikolai must pass the classes he's been failing. It's a dangerous game of pride versus necessity.

In a world where money buys everything, Maya is the only thing Nikolai can't own. But as secrets about Maya's mysterious benefactor surface, she realizes that her freedom might have already been paid for-by the very family she's trying to escape.

Will the price of love be more than she can afford?

Prologue: The Price of a Secret
I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, the heavy silk of a sapphire-blue gown pooling around my feet. This dress cost more than my father's life, and yet, I felt like a fraud. In the ballroom, the elite of Manila were sipping champagne, their diamonds glittering under the chandeliers. They didn't see Maya Celestine, the girl from the fishing village. They saw Nikolai St. Jude's mystery date. "You look like you're about to run," a voice whispered behind me. I didn't need to turn around. The scent of sandalwood and rain already filled my senses. Nikolai stepped into the light, looking devastating in a black tuxedo. He didn't look at the crowd. He only looked at me. "I don't belong here, Nikolai," I said, my voice trembling. "This is a lie. This whole night is a lie." He stepped closer, his hand grazing the small of my back. A spark of electricity shot through me, a dangerous heat I couldn't ignore. "Everything in this room is a lie, Maya. The smiles, the jewelry, the names. But this?" He reached out, his thumb tracing my lower lip. His eyes, usually as cold as a storm, were burning. "This is the most real thing I've felt in years." "Don't," I breathed, pulling away. "We had a deal. You paid the rent. I'm just the tutor." "The deal changed the moment you walked down those stairs," he hissed, his grip tightening on my arm. "And we both know it." Before I could respond, the heavy doors opened. A flash of a camera blinded me. Chloe was there, her face a mask of fury, and behind her, the Dean—Nikolai's grandfather—looked at us with a gaze that could end my future in a single second. I realized then that the price of my scholarship wasn't just hard work. It was my heart.
