Chapter 1
CATHERINE
‘This night obviously didn’t go as planned’, I muttered to myself , sucking on my bloody teeth and spitting it out. Men are trash, or I am trash, I actually thought I could pull it off and make enough money. My job as a waiter is not paying enough, I hate when I have to think this much.
I walked to the nearest hospital close by, luckily for me we all have hospital cards from school, as students and citizens that would eventually serve this country.
“What happened?” A nurse asked, with so much concern in her eyes, she looked like she was tired with the heavy eye bags hanging from the base of her eyes.
“It was just work.” I am too embarrassed to tell her, Oh it was a client that beat the s**t out of me, this is my third attempt, I have too many stories with unfortunate men. She gives me a confused look, she then narrows her eyes at me and says “if it’s domestic violence you know, you could always go to the cops” what is she saying? I should go to the cops and say?
‘I am Catherine Anderson, I want to file a complaint against my client, he beat me up because I didn’t know how to raise my butt enough to him, and he complained I couldn’t turn him on. Please arrest him?’ It sounded so dumb to me.
“Thank you for your concern but no, it’s not domestic violence can you just treat it?” I asked with a commanding smile. The more I spoke the more my head ached and I couldn’t feel my jaw.
I was dressed in a white short dress which was now obviously stained with blood, the back was completely showing off my back, the front of the gown covered my breast, basically just my n*****s, my navel was exposed with my waist beads, and the dress didn’t go below my knees. I got it from Liz a friend at where I work, who knew this thing and advised me to just try it so I could pay my bills. Now it seems like I owe her a new dress, I couldn’t possibly give her this. More debts to my name, typical Catherine!
The nurse started to clean my wound, she injected me something and said it would help numb the pain because I kept whining like a little baby everytime she touched me.
“Miss Anderson, do make sure to take all of your medicine and do not forget to apply the ointment I prescribed. You should be much more careful next time, Miss Anderson.” The nurse said and I nodded.
I looked at my face on my phone’s front camera. My eyes were swollen and my lips split. I tried to wipe at the little blood that had begun to form on the side of my lip and I winced. My bandage arm was sore and I couldn’t exactly do a lot of things with it.
“Thank you. I’ll make sure to take all of my medicine and be more careful next time.” I stood up and gave her a small smile before walking out of the room.
As I made my way to the elevator, several thoughts filled my mind. Debt. Money. I needed alot of money to clear up my family’s debt, I could literally Rob a bank right now. Being the oldest amongst three children, I knew I had to do something. I couldn’t allow my family live in fear everyday of their lives.
All thanks to Mr Andrew, life has been miserable for my family and I. Apparently, my father had borrowed some money from him but could not pay back. Instead of giving my father enough time to pay his debt, he murdered my father. In cold blood. I don’t know much about this Mr Andrew, but he did seem or sound like someone that would stop until he got his whole money back, from the kind of threats we having been getting. I couldn’t risk allowing only mother worry about this.
“Ouch!” I winced as I bumped into someone by the sliding doors of the elevator. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.” I apologized to the man in a white lab coat and a stethoscope around his neck. I had never seen this doctor at the hospital.
‘You fool! This is a big hospital and you do not know everyone that works here.’ I muttered under my breath.
“It’s okay.” The doctor dismissed me with a wave of his hand.
I walked into the elevator and stood beside him and the woman he was with, she gave a small smile back to me, she was almost same height as me but she was taller. She had beautiful rich hair, and she did smile like she enjoyed the conversation.
I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but I was interested in what they talked about, it was a word that caught my attention.
“…it’s not easy money.” She said to him, money?, is she here for an appointment or what?
“I could rather have these eggs be useful than get rid of them monthly!” She told the doctor with a small laugh, I think that was supposed to be funny.
Eggs?, I have eggs too. I wanted to tell them. I will give you eggs and you give me money or whatever!
God what have I turned into? I feel like a mad person already, I hate owing people.
They kept talking, he was advising her and he asked me “what floor?”, I heard him but I was just don’t listening.
“What floor?”
“Last floor.” I managed. I was feeling tired, the nurse warned me that I would feel tired after some minutes. He nods as a response.
“Let’s go to my office and I will explain the risks and everything to you.” He told her as he stood looking forward, for a moment I admired his structure. I looked at his jaw line, his ears and hair, I imagined how life must have been easy for him with how soft his palms looked, how rich he was obviously being a doctor, I watched as he maintained a small smile on his face as he looked forward. His right hand held on his left wrist where he wore a wrist watch, I wonder how much that would cost? He kept tapping on it as if tired of this elevator ride. He wore a white well ironed long sleeve in his labcoat, black suit trouser, I am sure the jacket is in his office on a stand or resting on his chair. His shoes were clean and leather, immediately I noticed the ladies toes it looked so clean and well pedicures, she must have enough money to worry about painting her toe nails . Her legs looked well shaved, she was decently dressed, she rested in the wall of the elevator completely lost in thought, because as she kept tapping on the metal iron where she rested her back the sound was rather to loud, she was obviously nervous, she made a sudden movement as if back to earth, that was when the elevator pinged and he said “This way please,” he lead the way and she followed. I don’t know why but I followed too.
They kept talking as they walked, I didn’t hear clearly but I followed them quietly hoping they didn’t notice. After two turns he stops in front of open, gets his hands out and put it under a hand sanitizer , which automatically pours some content on his hand he rubs them, gets a tissue cleans the door handle and opens the door , she does the same thing with the sanitizer, he walked in leading her inside and closing the door but not completely, his office looked so nice. The door was big and light brown in colour, the handle was silver colored, there was something that looked like a documents jacket on the door, I did see him remove some papers from it before locking it back , and opening the door.
I walked closer to the office and try to peep inside, at this moment I didn’t really care how I looked, but before coming to the hospital I wore a big jacket, but you could see how indecently dressed I was. I am beyond interested in their conversation so I move closer to the door and I read his name “Dr. Max Dickson”, his last name though, I am sure he was teased as a young boy over his name like ‘big head dicky ‘, I chuckled at my humor. I tried to pretend to rest on the wall as if trying to catch my breath then I heard
“So there are basically no risks?” She said, as if she was thinking.
“There are risks, pregnancy is not easy, but now you are being paid to carry this child.” he said calmly, to carry the child? Paid?, now he had my attention again.
“The pay is good, I mean $100,000, is no small cash.” She said. Did I just hear 100?, what? I have been struggling with paying for more than a decade now, everytime I delayed I don’t even understand his weird calculations it’s as though it was not reducing.
“To be a surrogate is not easy, but you do know there are risks and pains like child birth. Anything could happen!” The Doctor spoke , doing his job as a doctor.
“100,000 dollars will solve literally all my problems.” She said. All our problems, I thought.
