PROLOGUE:The Mark Of The Phoenix
Golden wheat and silver dew, The sky is dressing just for you. The shadows trail, the night is deep, But firebirds never sleep. Sleep for now in your wooden bed, Until the morning light. When the Phoenix mark has burned and woken, And the Prize has been Chosen Climb the glass where clovers grow, And sing the song to trolls below. Their heavy eyes will drift to rest, The bird of prey protects the nest. Beware the giant’s hungry roar, And the creeping eye upon the floor. The emerald breath of a hollow slave, Is broken by the gold and brave. When the boulder falls and the leash is torn, A single note will greet the morn, Ending all the sadness and the pain The start of something new is born, A new rose and a single thorn Before the first stone of Clover Valley was laid, and long before the waterfalls of the north ran dry, there was Amethyst Springs. It was a kingdom of violet glass and shimmering waters, ruled by two twin princesses whose beauty was the envy of the heavens. Aurora was the younger of the two, small and lithe with hair as dark as a starless night. She was a creature of the wild, happiest when she was humming to the birds or weaving the scent of crushed herbs into new melodies. Her spirit was a gentle light, and her voice was said to be the only thing that could make the mountain stones weep with joy. Her sister, Agiena, was her opposite. Taller, with waves of spun-gold hair and eyes like polished sapphires, she walked with a grace that bordered on arrogance. She knew she was beautiful. She spent hours gazing into the amethyst pools, captivated by her own reflection, convinced that her face was her greatest power. On their eighteenth birthday, their mother delivered news that should have sealed the kingdom's glory. Aisha, a powerful and temperamental God, had heard rumors of a beauty that surpassed even Aphrodite. He had come to Amethyst Springs to claim Agiena as his bride and Goddess-Queen. Agiena was radiant with pride. "I shall rule at his side," she boasted to her sister. Aurora hugged her tightly, her heart full of genuine warmth. "I will miss you, sister," she whispered, happy for Agiena’s fortune, never dreaming of the shadow trailing behind the God’s golden chariot. That night, a grand feast was held. The Great Hall was filled with the scent of roasted meats and expensive wine. Aisha sat at the head of the table, his eyes dark and piercing. When he kissed Agiena’s hand, she giggled and blushed, preening under his attention. "Aurora," Agiena called out, her voice ringing over the music. "Sing for us. Let our guest hear the best voice in the realm before I depart." Aurora took her place, her dark hair falling over her shoulders. As the harps began a soft, rolling melody, she opened her mouth. Her voice rose like incense, a silk-and-silver sound that seemed to pull the very moonlight into the room. As she sang, Aisha’s gaze drifted away from the golden-haired Agiena. He watched Aurora, captivated not by her jewels or her height, but by the celestial light dancing in her eyes and the divine purity of her song. Agiena saw it. She saw the way the God’s breath hitched. She saw the look of longing that wasn't meant for her. Jealousy, sharp and hot as a coal, ignited in her chest. She stood abruptly, her chair screeching against the floor. "Stop!" Agiena shrieked. "The song is horrible! It’s grating and loud!" The music died. Aurora stopped, her face flushing with confusion and hurt. "I... I am sorry, sister," she stammered, trying to reach out, but Agiena turned and fled, slamming her bedroom door so hard the amethyst walls vibrated. Aurora stood alone in the sudden silence until she felt a presence behind her. Aisha’s voice was a low, dangerous whisper in her ear. "I came here for the princess with the prettiest face," he murmured, his hands reaching out to cup her head. "But I have changed my mind. I want the princess with the voice of heaven." "I couldn't possibly," Aurora breathed, trembling as she tried to pull away. "My sister is the one you chose. She is the fairest. I am nothing but a singer." Aisha didn't listen. He forced her to look into his eyes—eyes that burned with the power of a thousand suns—and kissed her. In that moment, the door burst open. Agiena stood there, her golden hair wild, a silver dagger clutched behind her back. She didn't see the God’s divinity; she only saw the betrayal. She lunged, raising the blade high above her head. "No! Don't!" Aurora screamed. "He is a God!" The blade struck Aisha’s back and shattered into a thousand useless shards. The God turned, his face twisting into a mask of divine fury. He caught Agiena by the throat, hoisting her off her feet as she gasped for air. "Curse you both!" Aisha hissed, his voice echoing like thunder. "You foolish, vain girl. You prize your face above all else? Then you shall have a face that strikes terror into the hearts of men." Aurora tried to pull his hands away, but he grabbed her as well. "And you, with your bird-song... you shall be a bird that can never sing." With a roar of power, Aisha cast his judgment. "Agiena, I turn you into a Harpy. By day, you shall be a shriveled witch, bound to the rotting shadows of the Cave of Echoes, where the light will burn your skin like acid. Your golden hair will turn to gray straw, and your skin will wither like a fallen leaf. By night, you may fly, but only as a creature of prey—a bird with the head of a vulture, doomed to feast on the dead." He turned his burning gaze to Aurora. "And you, I turn into the Phoenix. You shall be a bird of fire, beautiful but songless, trapped in a celestial cage beyond the Tri-Gem Gates of Sapphire Knoll. You are banished to the sun itself, a prisoner of your own light." Aisha leaned in close, his voice cold as the void. "Only the full song you sang tonight can break this curse. It must be sung by one of your blood—one marked with the Firebird on her neck, one who is of the Light but falls for her enemy, a child of the Dark." The princesses didn't understand. They didn't know that "the child of the Dark" was yet to be born from Agiena’s bitterness. Aisha cast Agiena into the Cave of Echoes, decreeing that she could only be freed if a Prince of her line killed his own kin and brought her their blood. From that blood, she would create the Vampire—her "children" who would hunt the living to quench her eternal thirst. Aurora was swept into the sky, locked in a cage of gold and sapphire on the face of the sun. Her song was lost to the world, broken into fragments, preserved only in the secret memories of her distant descendants—the family of Sindel. And so the sisters waited. One in the dark, hungry for blood; one in the light, waiting for the girl with the red mark to sing the final note and unlock the gates of heaven so she could finally descend and end the nightmare.
