ORDINARY BEGINNINGS
Gavin Ethan lives in the quiet suburban town of Crestwood, where rows of neatly trimmed lawns and picket fences paint a picture of tranquility. Tall oak trees line the streets, their branches swaying gently in the afternoon breeze. At seventeen, Gavin blends into the tapestry of high school life, neither popular nor a recluse, finding comfort in his close-knit circle of friends and the familiar routines that define his days. The mornings begin with the jarring buzz of his alarm clock, a relic from middle school that somehow manages to rouse him from sleep. He stumbles out of bed, rubs his eyes, and reluctantly trudges downstairs to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee that his mother, a nurse at the local hospital, always makes before her early shifts.
Breakfast is a hurried affair, usually a bowl of cereal or a toast slathered with peanut butter. His younger sister, Lily, chatters excitedly about her latest school project or some new trend that Gavin can't quite keep up with. Their father, a jovial man with a penchant for bad puns and gardening, joins in, his booming laughter filling the kitchen with warmth.
The walk to Crestwood High is a daily ritual, a ten-minute journey past familiar houses and the occasional nod to neighbors walking their dogs. Gavin's friends await him at the school gates, where they trade banter and inside jokes before heading to their lockers. Among them was his best friend Mark a star athlete with the dream of winning a sports scholarship.
Classes pass in a blur of lectures and scribbled notes. Gavin is an average student, more inclined toward history and art than math or science. His teachers know him as dependable, if unremarkable, though Ms. Rodriguez, the eccentric English teacher with a penchant for Edgar Allan Poe, always sees a spark of something deeper in his essays.
Lunch Breaks are for catching up with friends in the courtyard but Gavin was always found beneath an oak tree that seats right in front of the library. Yeah, he was someone who appreciated the peace and beauty in nature. Everyone always knew where to find him during lunch breaks, either in the library or or sketching beneath the ancient shade of the oak tree.
Evenings bring family dinners around a worn oak table, where conversations veer from Lily's science fair triumphs to their father's attempts at growing prize-winning tomatoes. Gavin retreats to his room afterward, losing himself in novels borrowed from Ms. Rodriguez's overflowing bookshelf or browsing the internet for new art techniques.
And so, life in Crestwood flows, predictable yet comforting, until one evening when everything changes—a pivotal moment that shatters the illusion of normalcy and thrusts Gavin Ethan into a world he never knew existed.
One evening, as Gavin sits at his desk in his room, the glow of his desk lamp casting a warm pool of light over his sketches, something extraordinary happens. He reaches for an old family chest tucked away in the corner, hoping to find inspiration for his latest drawing. The chest contained some of his old toys that he he refused to dispose even after outgrowing them.
Among the dusty trinkets and forgotten heirlooms his hand brushed against a peculiar pendant —a smooth, silver talisman adorned with intricate runes that shimmer faintly in the dim room.
It was his grandma's. He received the pendant from her before she died three years ago but never had he taken notice of features of the pendant. Curiosity piqued, Gavin lifts the pendant, studying its surface with furrowed brows. It feels cool to the touch, yet pulses faintly as if echoing with a dormant power. As he ran his fingers round it he came across an inscription written at the back of the pendant
"What's this?", he whispered as he brought the pendant closer to the lamp.
The inscription behind it was not a written in English and so picking up his pencil he scribbled the words on a piece of paper.
"Eldrimos Bagim?", he asked himself looking puzzled.
Suddenly, a gentle warmth spreads from the pendant through Gavin's fingertips, accompanied by a soft hum that resonates in his ears. Startled he stands up from behind his chair, he releases the pendant and it begins to float in the air.
Suddenly, a swirling portal materializes before him with shimmering edges like liquid silver.
"Ok I'm dreaming", he said as he slaps himself, "Or not."
Heart pounding, Gavin shakily he stretched his hand to the spinning doorway. His hand went through the door way and he quickly pulled back. "What in the world?".
Gavin's mind races with questions and excitement, realizing that what was before him wasn't normal he breathes in hard and steps into the door way and after he disappears into it the door way disappears just as it appeared.
