ONE
The feeling of fear nibbled at my stomach like a hungry mouse as I pushed the button for the penthouse apartment.
We were having an engagement party for one of our pack members and I was late. Evan was going to be angry.
When I stepped off the elevator to the sound of the Smokey Mountain Pack talking and chatting. I could feel their stares.
I was the Luna that was not the mate of their Alpha.
I was a cursed wolf.
Ten years ago I was sold into a contract with their Alpha so they could strengthen the pack’s hold on the East Coast.
The others in the room moved away from me. I hunched in on myself and I knew I should have held my head up but they always made me feel small.
“You are late for the party you are supposed to be hosting and your husband is nowhere to be seen.” Rena Mercer sauntered over to me tossing her glossy hair over her bare shoulders.
“I had to do some last-minute preparations. As for Evan, I don’t know where he is.” The woman moved closer and I backed into the table.
I was the Luna of the strongest Alpha on the East Coast but I was weak and scared.
“You look like you need a drink little puppy.” Rena’s thick accent was filled with disdain as she poured her drink on my head.
The other guests in the room stopped talking and laughed at us.
“Don’t touch her Rena or you may get her curse.” Hannah one of Rena’s minions came over and giggled at me as I stood there shivering.
“True, she ended up pregnant and married by contract. She will never have a mate because the Moon Goddess has shunned her.” My eyes looked around the room and there were no friendly faces to be found.
“Half wolf.” Someone spit on me and I tried to push my way through the crowd.
A tall figure strolled towards me and the room seemed to stand still. It was Lexington, Evan’s Beta, and my first true love. I never will know the mate bond but I do know love.
“You will not touch her anymore.” Rena raised her hand to slap Lex and he grabbed her wrist. His giant hand swallowed her dainty-boned arm.
“You are not my Alpha; you are not even her mate so why are you bothering with an ugly little half wolf.” Rena sneered at Lex.
He grabbed me and wrapped me up in his coat whisking me away from the room.
“Where is Evan?” The words were choking me as he led me to my room.
Lex’s lack of answers made my pulse skyrocket in fear.
“Just get changed Madison.” His indifferent tone frightened me even more.
I shrugged out of my clothes; my body was covered in bruises. I placed my hands on my stomach which housed another man’s child.
I left my room and saw Evan in the middle of the room with his arm wrapped around Rena. She was nuzzled into his neck and I felt sick.
He looked in my direction and Rena narrowed her emerald eyes at me.
“Packmates, thank you for being here today. I have several things to announce. First, I want to congratulate my Beta on finding his mate.” My head snapped in Lex’s direction and he looked guilty.
“Thank you my Alpha.” He bowed next to Evan and I could feel the Alpha’s power roll over the room.
“The next bit of business I am choosing a new Luna.” The reality hit me like a stray car.
“This woman beside me is mine. She is my mate. My contract with the Burgundy River pact is no longer valid.” It felt like someone was ripping my soul from my body.
There were murmurs as I fell to my knees before Evan.
“Please, don’t do this to me.” Tears streamed down my face and Rena wrinkled her nose.
“Tell everyone the last bit of news baby.” She simpered, her eyes looking up at my husband adoringly.
“Your new Luna is having a baby.” He splayed his hand across her stomach possessively.
“Pack law states you can’t just replace our current Luna.” Someone spoke up and I was glad that they spoke for me.
“You’ve been cheating on me for how long Evan?” I pulled on his hand begging him to give me a kernel of hope.
He flicked me off as if I were nothing.
Falling back as the tears streamed down my face, the pack member started laughing at me.
“Pathetic thing, she can’t even have a child.” I felt my empty womb and sobbed. It wasn’t my fault.
“How long?” I wanted to scream at him but knew it was pointless.
“For over two years I have been cheating on you, I just recently found out Rena is my mate.” He hissed in my face, spit coating my cheeks.
“It was a contract; I never could love a disgusting pig like you.” He leaned in and I could smell the liquor on his breath.
“Baby, my Alpha, you need to abolish the contract.” The sickening sweet words from Rena’s painted red lips.
“Yes baby, I will do that now. Smokey Mountain pack, I Evan Farris abolish the contract that binds Madison Smith to me. I am no longer in debt to her or her pack. She is no longer my wife and I will have no ties to her.”
I could feel the Alpha bond shatter, tearing my soul to pieces. I was grateful that he was not her mate, that would have literally killed her.
Fleeing the city and Smoky Mountain Pack Territory, I harbored my own secrets as OI moved to another pack territory and started life over.
Keeping a low profile, I knew I would never trust another Alpha again. I had to keep my heart and my secrets safe.
