THREE WEEKS LATER “Finally we managed to get out of his territory. I was scared we weren’t going to make it.” Violet stretched and I groaned as I nibbled on some crackers. “How can I be sure that Evan isn’t going to find me?” Worry gnawed at my stomach. I placed my hands on it. I couldn’t quite believe I was pregnant; I was starting to show slightly but there wouldn’t be any movement yet. “We can’t be sure of anything. As long as we stay ahead of him…” She saw my pale face and smiled. “You have nothing to worry about. We are here in Montana. We are across the country.” I played with the pendant around my neck. We picked it up from a gypsy woman outside of New Orleans. She said it would conceal my wolf and keep me from being detected by any Alphas. “Uh oh looks like the welcome committee is here.” Violet leaned back on the hood of the car as a woman approached us. She had to be part of the local pack. “Greetings, my name is Iris Whitedove. I want to welcome you to our little town of Halden Montana.” Violet and I nodded our heads in deference to her rank in the pack. “My name is Tansy this is Lily. We’re sisters. Unfortunately, I ended up in a bad relationship with a boyfriend and had to flee before he could beat me to death.” Iris tilted her head and I had the sinking feeling she was one of the few wolves with the ability to detect lies. She looked around and gestured for us to follow her. Violet and I glanced at one another and she shrugged. Iris led us to a small diner that was bustling with activity and the main clientele had the scent of human. As we slid into a booth she leaned in closer and put her hands on the table staring at the two of us. “Cut the bullshit. I wasn’t born yesterday. You’re the Smokey Mountain Pack’s Luna and you, well I don’t know why you are here.” I was too stunned to speak. Violet looked slightly insulted. “So what if we are? She isn’t his Luna anymore, that abusive prick broke his bond with her.” I winced at Violet’s bluntness. Iris blinked, surprise on her face, then horror and it ended with disgust. “How could he do that?” I shrugged and yawned. “I wasn’t his mate, he supposedly found his mate and then decided I wasn’t good enough to keep around. He has been screwing around with other women for years.” I briefly glanced at Violet who shot Iris a grin. “I was one of his mistresses. He ended up being a little too handsy and I stole from him.” I sighed, she was so matter of fact. “That is still terrible. Come on we welcome you to the safety of our pack.” I was reluctant to trust any wolf pack let alone their Alpha. Iris must have seen my hesitation and sighed again. “If it is the Alpha you’re worried about, please don’t worry. As an Alpha, I solemnly swear to welcome you to the pack and extend the safety of my pack to you and your friend.” Violet’s jaw dropped and I just stared. Iris looked uncomfortable and shifted in her seat. “It does happen, a female Alpha can run the pack. My mate died a few years ago. It appears that even we aren’t immune to some of the human diseases.” The sadness that crept into her voice made my heart break for her. I would never know what it is like to have a mate. I can only feel envious of her, especially for having such a mate that she would mourn his loss. “We accept your hospitality, Alpha Iris.” Violet spoke up, I was still dumbfounded and lost in my thoughts. “Do you have a doctor that could look at Maddy?” Iris tilted her head again and was studying me. “I have been getting mixed test results. I don’t believe I am pregnant but Violet thinks I am. The tests have been inconclusive.” Iris’s eyes softened as she looked down at her stomach. “We do have a doctor that could help with that. I am also sure you would like to keep it a secret from others.” The fact that she didn’t trust someone in her pack made me rethink the invitation. “I trust my inner circle. We have some outsiders though and they tend to have loose lips. Come on let’s get you two settled in.” Did she read my mind? As I slid out and followed her out of the diner. This would be the first night of the rest of our lives.
