WhispersoftheMoon

Aria's POV Sleep refused to come. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him. The silver gleam of his eyes. The low rumble of his voice saying, Mine. It haunted me like a curse. By dawn, I’d given up. I wrapped myself in a robe and stepped onto the balcony of my room. The forest below was still draped in mist, the first light of morning brushing the treetops. My pack was beginning to stir — patrols changing shifts, kitchen scents drifting from the main house, the faint hum of life returning after last night’s chaos. But nothing felt the same. The mate bond throbbed like a bruise beneath my ribs. My wolf paced inside me, restless and conflicted. "He’s thinking of us," she murmured. "I don’t care," I snapped back. "He’s the Alpha King. He’s the enemy." But even as I said it, I could feel the echo of his emotions — faint, but real. A shadow of anger. A flicker of confusion. And something that felt disturbingly close to longing. I clenched the balcony rail until my knuckles whitened. “You will not control me,” I whispered to the invisible bond. A knock at the door startled me. “Come in,” I said. My mother entered, already dressed in her Luna robe, her long silver hair braided and pinned with pearls. Her calm eyes held the sharpness of a woman who missed nothing. “You didn’t sleep,” she said, not a question. I shook my head. “Too much on my mind.” Her gaze softened. “Last night was… strange. Your father is still trying to make sense of it. Kael Draven’s sudden appearance was unexpected.” Unexpected was putting it mildly. No one crossed into our territory without permission, not even the Alpha King. The fact that he had — and during my Luna ceremony — was practically a declaration of war. “I’ll handle it,” I said quietly. My mother studied me for a long moment. “There’s something you’re not telling me, Aria.” I held her gaze, forcing a small smile. “You’ve always said being Luna means knowing when to stay silent.” That earned the faintest sigh. She stepped forward, brushing her thumb against my cheek. “Then at least remember this — strength doesn’t mean hardening your heart. Even Lunas are allowed to feel.” She left before I could reply, her scent of jasmine and snow lingering in the air. By midday, I was in the council hall — an oval chamber built from white stone and old magic. The elders sat in their carved chairs, voices overlapping like restless crows. “…Shadowfang spies, that’s what it was.” “…The Alpha King testing our defenses—” “…He came for something, or someone.” My father raised his hand, silencing them. “Enough.” His gaze fell on me. “Aria, as our new Luna, your insight matters. Why do you think he was here?” My throat tightened. Because he’s my mate. Because the Moon Goddess has a cruel sense of humor. “I think he was testing boundaries,” I said finally. “Maybe trying to intimidate us.” My father nodded grimly. “Then we’ll respond in kind. Double the patrols. Send word to the southern border that no Shadowfang wolf is to cross it.” The council murmured approval. My chest ached. The walls were closing in — lies upon lies, each one heavier than the last. That evening, I walked the garden to clear my head. The moon was just beginning to rise, soft and shy against the fading gold of sunset. The air smelled of roses and earth. For a moment, I almost believed peace was possible. Then something flickered at the edge of my vision — a glint among the rosebushes. I knelt, pushing the leaves aside. A black velvet pouch lay hidden beneath the petals. Inside, a folded note sealed with silver wax, marked with the sigil of a wolf’s eye — Kael’s crest. My pulse quickened. I hesitated, then broke the seal. “Luna of the SilverMoon." You can pretend not to feel it, but you know what binds us. The war between our packs isn’t what it seems. Meet me under the Blood Oak when the moon reaches its peak tomorrow night. Alone. — K.” The parchment trembled slightly in my hands. The Blood Oak was deep in the border forest — neutral ground. Dangerous ground. My mind screamed trap. But my heart whispered truth. I crushed the note in my palm, staring into the night sky. The mate bond pulsed again, low and insistent. “Moon goddess help me,” I whispered. “What are you doing to me, Kael?”
