Chapter 12 What if Diana couldn't handle it?

1332 Words
Looking at the ice sculpture in the distance, the two staff members who delivered the clothes rubbed their eyes, frozen in place. Then the one responsible for distributing the SID cards hurriedly bowed his head, fumbling through his storage wristband to pull out a small booklet. He held it in his hand and flipped through it frantically for a while, finally finding the relevant page. He looked up at Adam's face, then back down to compare, doing this several times. The manual clearly stated in advance - Adam, Superpower: Energy Chain, Superpower Rating: E (with variants). After confirming, he turned to look at the ice sculpture again, utterly puzzled. Does this have anything to do with Energy Chain?! "Ah, this..." Diana, observing the puzzled look on the other person's face, felt a sense of satisfaction and interrupted, saying: "Alright, stop looking. The information in that manual was transmitted in advance with errors. Adam's superpower has developed a very special variant, and he'll definitely need to be reassessed for his rating soon." "As for you, you don't need to worry about that for now. Just hurry back and get him a new SID card." "O-oh, okay, I'll get on it right away." With that, the staff member hurriedly left, running while occasionally turning back to take another look at the ice sculpture created by Adam. It had to be said, it was indeed impressive! Watching the staff member's mix of astonishment and disbelief, Edward and the others couldn't hold back their laughter, their eyes filled with gloating. After all, over these two days, they had witnessed Adam's transformation, watching as someone with a mere E-rated superpower turned into a genius who outperformed them. The shock and the gap were hard to bear, and seeing Adam bring this discomfort to others somehow made them feel a bit better. "Umm... Miss Matthews, I'm not very good at controlling my superpower yet; I can freeze things but haven't learned how to unfreeze them." Seeing that his display of power only brought joy to those around him, Adam helplessly pointed at the distant ice sculpture and said to Diana. "It's a minor issue, just practice more, and you'll get it," Diana said, not even looking, snapping her fingers casually. Instantly, the distant ice sculpture turned back into water, cascading down like a suspended waterfall, crashing into the moat below! Witnessing Diana's effortless display, Adam was taken aback. This woman was incredibly powerful; although he had copied her superpower, he was far from matching her in terms of combat strength. "Also, you don't have to call me Miss Matthews anymore. You're all about to start university, so just call me Diana." "And you guys..." Diana was cut off mid-sentence when her phone rang. The moment the specific ringtone sounded, her expression turned serious. Everyone present could clearly sense her usually cool demeanor turn into one of deadly seriousness. She answered the call and held the phone to her ear. "What? Are you sure?" "At a time like this?! How dare they!" "Two kids?" "Mm, I understand, I'll lead the team to handle it." After speaking, she quickly hung up the phone and turned to the staff member. "Once the SID card is delivered, take them to their accommodations quickly and settle them in. I have to leave now for something." Seeing her sudden decisive and forceful attitude, the staff member quickly nodded in agreement. Diana continued, "You guys, follow the staff back to your accommodations and rest. Don't go out unless necessary." Although she said "you guys," her gaze was fixed on Adam. After receiving an affirmative response, she didn't waste any time and transformed into a streak of light, rushing into the stadium. A few minutes later, Adam was already lying on a large bed, taking out his phone. He wasn't sure what exactly had happened earlier; Diana seemed quite anxious. But he let it go, it wasn't his responsibility, and with Diana's abilities, she should be able to handle most situations without issue. He found the only contact on his phone, "Icecream," and as usual, sent a game invitation. But this time, for some reason, "Icecream" didn't respond for a long time. "Maybe they're busy," Adam thought to himself and started the game on his own. As soon as he entered the game interface, the message came through. [Icecream: I've got something to take care of, so I won't be able to chat for a bit.] [Icecream: By the way, I heard there's been an issue at the place where you're supposed to go trials.] [Icecream: Two kids have been kidn*pped, and the kidnappers are reportedly very dangerous! Be extra careful, and if there's nothing to do, just play on your phone and don't wander around.] What?? Adam was taken aback by the message. Human traffickers?? He quickly replied: [Wanderer: How do you know about this? Are you in law enforcement or something?] [Wanderer: Who are these people? It should be pretty easy for someone with superpowers to track down human traffickers, right?] But after sending the messages, there was no response, as if they had fallen into the depths of the sea. "Icecream" seemed to have some urgent matter and didn't reply anymore. Looking at his phone, which had been unresponsive for a while, and with the game already started, Adam couldn't help but look out the window. Night had fallen, and tonight there was no moon, and hardly any stars were visible; it was dark and gloomy. "Damn it, why do I have to run into this kind of crap?" In front of the large full-length mirror, Adam straightened his collar and took a few deep breaths. He was now wearing the combat uniform that had been freely distributed today, with the SID card representing his identity pinned to his chest. The clothes he had been wearing were now in the room's washing machine, having been through rain and dust. "I wonder if those in charge can handle it," Adam muttered to himself as he straightened his clothes. His memory was pretty good, and he was now recalling the scene when Diana took the call. From the snippets he overheard, Adam guessed that Diana was likely dealing with this very issue. Considering Diana's level of power, if this situation could make her serious, then the kidnappers might not be ordinary criminals. Although Adam was confident in Diana, when he thought rationally, he really didn't have a solid grasp: What if Diana couldn't handle it? To be honest, if Adam's superpower was limited to just Absolute Freezing, he probably wouldn't get involved in this kind of situation. But now, he also has Hearing of Everything. Even if others don't realize it, he's acutely aware of how extraordinary his superpower is. It's no exaggeration to say he could outmatch a hundred Sherlock Holmeses singlehandedly. He now faces two clear paths: First: Head out and use Hearing of Everything to find these people. With his superpower, as long as the targets are nearby, he's confident he can locate them. Second: Lie down and play online games. This matter isn't his responsibility, but if he doesn't act and two kids who could have been saved are lost, he'd feel guilty. Moreover, when he was young, he detested human traffickers more than anything. He always fantasized about what he would do if he ever encountered a human trafficker, what harsh punishment he would inflict. Now that he has superpowers, the opportunity has arisen; how could he hide! Finally, he looked at the online game that had already started a few minutes ago. His teammates were already sending question marks, and those with shorter tempers had started cursing. Turning on the all-mic, Adam held his microphone to his mouth and said: "Guys, I have to go AFK, understand, I'm going out to catch some human traffickers!" After saying that, he reluctantly threw his game controller onto the bed, fearing the points he had worked hard to gain would drop again.
