Chapter 1

Raquel I felt his grip on my neck. He pinned my neck to the bed. Yes, I saw him again. Even in the darkness, his red eyes stood out. His jet-black hair was packed into a rough bun. His lashes were very long and they curled perfectly. His tongue was super red like he had feasted on blood and flesh. His face was white like he had applied some powder yet the darkness around his eyes, lips, and ears made him look horrible, like a devil, in unison with the black garment he was wearing and the black headband wrapped around his forehead. I tried to touch him but he was like smoke. I could not touch him yet his grip didn’t lessen on my neck. He had a sinister smile on his face as I gasped for air trying to save myself. Just then, I woke up, panting. It was the same nightmare again. Darkness was beginning to part way for light. It was dawn. Beads of perspiration formed on my face as I continued panting. I touched my neck and then it suddenly felt like his hands were on my neck. What was with the nightmare? It was recurring. Always seeing those hands, that smile, that face, the dark claws that threatened to dig into my skin. Why wouldn’t he use his claws instead anyway? I sighed and rolled in my bed, rubbing my eyes and yawning. I was careful in rolling so I would not fall from the small bed that lay in the center of the small room. It was one of the smallest rooms in the house. Crossing my leg, I waited patiently for morning to come. While waiting, nature took over, and then…. “Raquel!” Mother's voice resounded in my ear. I didn’t realize when I had slept off. I hissed as I covered my head with the little garment I used to protect myself from the cold. “Raquel!” Mother’s sonorous voice pierced my ears. Was it morning so soon? Slowly, I let down the cloth from my face to behold the early morning sun. I had to feed the chickens and join my mother to make breakfast. The day had a lot in store for me yet I was not ready to do any of it. “She stays up late even when you insist she goes to bed. The blame is all on me who allows you to sleep till whenever. I am so tired of this negligence and stupid act of hers. Raquel is a lady for goodness sake!” I heard mother rant as she walked towards my room. Her footsteps were even very audible this time around, more than ever. I tried to pretend to be asleep but I knew mother was aware that I was awake. “You silly girl, I have told you time and again…” “Ouch” I winced in pain, holding my ear. It was already a habit yet it still pained me each time my mother squeezed my ear.
