Chapter 2

“When I tell you to retire to bed early, you won't and then you leave me with all the chores you are supposed to do.“Mother ranted, anger visible all over her face as she lowered her eyebrows and squinted her eyes. “I am sorry, mother. I will get to my chores now.” I pleaded, feeling very sober. Well, the pain was enough to make me feel sober. I had to plead so my mother would let me go. Mother sighed and then let go of my ear. I sat up, holding my ear. It had become hot. “Take your bath and join me downstairs.” She ordered and walked out of my room, slamming the door. Poor door! It was already becoming weak. My mother did not fail to slam it every day since she always had to come to get me herself. The door was already giving way and it would not be surprising if it falls one day. I shook her head, rubbed my eyes, and stood up. The day's activities had begun. I yawned and stretched as I walked to the bathroom, a smile on her face as I took off my cloth and dunked into the bath. The water was so cool. If I had the luxury of time, I could stay there all day but I had bigger plans. Hurriedly, I scrubbed my body and walked out of the bathtub. I wiped off the water from her body and then, applied some oil to my body as I contemplated what to wear. I opened my wardrobe and borough out a blue flowery dress with white designs all over. I was made already so I simply brushed my hair. I didn’t want to sit by the mirror cause if I did, I would take more time so avoided the mirror. “Mother” I smiled as I headed to the kitchen. The sweet savory smell from the kitchen had already taken over the living room. Mother was making omelets. With a smile on my face, I rushed to the cabinet where the omelet was placed to take a bite. Immediately, Mother seized my hand. Just like she had expected it. “Prepare the table for breakfast. Your brothers would be waiting”. I rolled her eyes. What if they were waiting? At that point, all that mattered was for me to taste something. Others could wait. Mumbling some words in anger, I stepped out of the kitchen, heading straight to the little table that was in the dining. Just then, my elder brother, Rex walked in, with a bowl in his hand. He had fed the chicken and he was obviously angry with me. I always had the habit of skipping chores. A habit he was not satisfied with. It wasn’t my fault though. “Raquel” My oldest brother, Rafael called as he also walked in. Just then, the youngest of my brothers, Ralph walked in as well. While Ralph smiled at me, Rex and Ralph were pretty upset with her. I always had the luxury of time to stay home as much as I wanted, doing nothing while they always went out for various jobs yet I defaulted on doing the home chores. Quickly, I rushed back to the kitchen. I didn’t want to be scolded by my brothers. I brought out the jar of milk that was placed in the fridge and then poured it into a pot so I could make it warm. “Mother, I….” I was about to talk when my mother’s eyes widened in shock. “Raquel, are you fine? How did you obtain the mark on your neck?” My mother questioned, examining me with love and care. “My neck?” I questioned, raising my brows. My eyes widened. No, it could not be. I dashed out of the kitchen, leaving my mother in confusion as well as leaving my brothers astonished as I headed to my room, staring into the mirror. I stared at it deeply. There were red marks on her neck that showed that I was….. someone attempted to….No! It can’t be.
