“That’s it? You’re just going to let it end like this?” Melissa asked later when Shay had returned to his parents’ house, and he and Melissa were in his room. She stood in front of him as he sat on the bed with his head in his hands.
“I love him, but what else can I do?”
“You’re incredible! You could grow a pair! You tell me you’ve found the love of your life, but you’re not willing to do the one thing that’ll keep you from losing it.”
Shay shook his head. “It’s not that simple.”
“Oh, isn’t it?”
Shay looked up at her. “What do you think I should do? Sit my family down and say, ‘By the way, I’ve been meaning to tell y’all something for a long time. I’m gay.’ That’d go over real well. You heard my brother at breakfast, the way he talked about Dwayne and his friends.”
