Casting Off
NEED TO THINK. Should I tell the first mate or the captain what’s going to happen? Chances are they’ll think I’m crazy. I can’t let them force me to leave the ship, because I’ll save at least a few people and I owe it to them to stay on board. Not sure what to do—if they’d listen to me, everyone will be saved, but why would they believe me?
Walter Payne interrupted Bodee’s thoughts. “Where the hell you been? I ain’t seen you for hours. Searched all over, ain’t no time for this nonsense. Where you been? Answer me.”
“Sorry, first I filled up the lamps up top and then they asked me to go dockside to clean up some broken glass from a lantern.” Bodee held up the frame as proof.
“Who are they? Who asked you to go to the dock?”
