Chapter 1: A Pawn in Your Game
Under the bright light, Sarah stood with a pallid face outside the CEO's office of Baker Group. Peeking through the c***k, she witnessed a passionate couple, setting an intense e*****a atmosphere. No, it can't be. Behind the door, she heard the man's low, labored breaths. Immediately, the woman's seductive voice drifted through. "Stephen, Brown Group is about to go bankrupt. Don't you worry about Sarah?" A creeping sensation coursed through Sarah. They were talking about Grandpa's company! The man casually lit up a cigarette. Surrounded by swirling smoke, the man coldly stated, "Sarah Brown is just a pawn. She means nothing to me now." A pawn! A pawn! A pawn! The monotonous words exploded in Sarah's mind like a thousand daggers, cutting her to the core. Simple words, yet they cut through her like a sharp blade, leaving her in a pool of emotional turmoil. Unable to contain herself, Sarah stumbled and collapsed to the ground with a resounding thud. "Who was there!" The woman was startled, glancing toward the door. "Stephen, is what you said true?" Sarah, with her dark eyes fixed on Stephen, had been discovered sitting at the door. Once anointed as the future First Lady of Baker Group, she now appeared utterly disheveled. "Since you knew, why did you bother asking? You were acting dumber than usual." The cold male voice echoed in the room without a hint of emotion. He glanced at her as if seeing something filthy, averted his eyes, and dismissed her with indifference. Sarah felt her heart sink to the depths of a lake, her entire being devoid of warmth. His reputation for ruthless decisiveness in the business world was well-known, but targeting her directly within their united front was unprecedented. Five years – from a lowly employee to the current Chief Operator, she had dedicated herself wholeheartedly to him. That night, when he was drunk, dragging her into a hotel, making her his woman – at that moment, she thought she was dreaming. Years of longing and admiration had finally blossomed. Yet, he stood too high, saw too far, too radiant. She had always feared she would fall behind his pace, even as his woman. Despite her efforts, working tirelessly for Baker Group, sleeping only 5 hours a day. She thought she would be "special" in his heart. Today, she found herself in this pitiful state. With a loud crash, she slammed the door and fled the scene. Clenching her teeth, Sarah ran wildly. Stumbling in her seven-inch high heels, she fell by the roadside. Kicking off her shoes like a madwoman, she raced frantically towards Brown Group. On that seemingly endless stretch of road, Sarah raced without pause, a relentless half-hour sprint. Disarrayed, akin to someone in dire straits, clad in tattered stockings, she reached the company's entrance, barefoot and breathless. "Damn, contemplating suicide at this age!" A sharp voice suddenly cut through the air, reaching Sarah's ears. Gasping for air, she turned to find a gathering at the company's entrance, individuals gesturing and pointing towards the rooftop. Looking up, under the subdued glow of lights, she discerned a figure standing on the rooftop. Her heart skipped a beat—it was her grandfather! "Grandpa! Don't frighten me!" Tears cascaded down Sarah's face, her hoarse voice echoing with a haunting emptiness. However, the building stood tall; her voice, like a fleeting breeze, was instantly swallowed into the night. In the next moment, she helplessly witnessed her aged grandfather's leap from the sixty-sixth-floor rooftop, descending from the lofty heights. "Bang"—he landed beside her, his skull shattering, blood streaming… At that moment, a car careened towards her and collided directly with Sarah. Standing in a daze beside her grandfather's lifeless form, the driver of the luxury car, oblivious to the tragedy, callously drove over her. In that fraction of time, Sarah comprehended—the curtains had fallen on her life. Past memories surged like an overwhelming tide. Three years ago, summoned to the ancestral home, her grandfather sighed with a cold resignation, revealing disappointment, helplessness, and an unmet expectation. "Sarah Brown, self-awareness is a rare trait. You and those Baker folks are an impossible match." "Why?" "Today, someone from their side arrived. Larry Baker has unequivocally stated; you shouldn't persist in this foolhardiness." A somber sigh accompanied the gradually dissipating smoke in the old mansion. "Grandpa, I love him." In the pitch-black world, the former Sarah, head held high, with a face full of melancholy yet unable to conceal the fervor in her heart, spoke with excitement, "I've decided on Stephen for my entire life. Apart from him, I'll never harbor affection for anyone else." So pure, so fervent, so joyous yet sorrowful. "Leave. I hope you won't regret it in the future." Grandpa turned his head, his interest waning, but she distinctly heard the complete disappointment in the old man's voice. The next moment, the scene transformed instantly. Grandpa stood atop the sixty-sixth floor, appearing disheveled and fatigued. "Sarah, I can't salvage the company anymore. It's beyond redemption." She felt her neck gripped fiercely, unable to emit any sound. Grandpa, with a wry smile, took a leap. "No!" A piercing scream escaped her mouth. This time, she wrested free from the force constricting her throat, her voice frigid and desperate, akin to a roar from the abyss. Those around her were startled; one of them immediately shouted, "Doctor! Doctor! My daughter isn't feeling well!"
