Chapter 2:The exile's path

The sound of cheering followed me all the way down the stone steps of the pack house and into the crisp night air. My body still trembled from the phantom burn of the severed bond, but the strange, cool sensation beneath my ribs remained. It felt like a frozen shield wrapped around my heart, dulling the agony just enough for me to keep moving. Every laughter-filled echo from inside felt like a fresh sting, a cruel reminder that while my life had shattered, theirs was proceeding without missing a single beat. I didn't head back to the servants' quarters. I knew what would be waiting for me there—mockery, pity, and the snickers of pack members who had always viewed me as a nuisance. Instead, I walked toward the edge of the village, where the dense trees of the Bloodmoon territory met the dark shadows of the northern mountains. "Leaving so soon, Omega?" A sharp voice cut through the rustling leaves. I froze, turning to see two Enforcers—guards loyal directly to Lucian’s father—stepping out from the treeline. Both men had their arms crossed, smirking condescendingly as they blocked the trail. "The ceremony isn't over," the larger one, Marcus, said with a low chuckle. "Though I suppose staying to watch the new Alpha seal his union with a real lady might be a bit too painful for someone like you." "I am just taking air," I said, keeping my voice as steady as possible, though my fist clenched tightly at my side. "You don't get to 'take air' near the borders," the second guard grunted, taking a step forward. "In fact, Alpha Lucian sent down an order before the feast resumed. An unbonded, family-less Omega serves no purpose to the pack's new alliance. You’ve been assigned to the northern Outpost. Permanently." My breath hitched. The Outpost was a bleak, desolate stretch of land at the far edge of the territory, right against the boundary of the formidable Nightshade Pack. It was where the pack sent exiles, rogues, and those deemed useless—a place where the weak were left to fend for themselves against harsh weather and territorial rivalries. "He's banishing me?" I whispered, the harsh reality hitting me like a bucket of ice water. "He's streamlining the pack," Marcus corrected, shoving his hands into his belt. "Pack laws state that a rejected mate who holds no noble blood or combat rank must be relocated to prevent... awkwardness. Pack orders. Start walking." He reached out toward my arm to forcibly shove me down the path. The moment his hand came close to my skin, a sudden, bright flash of pale silver light erupted from my collarbone. Marcus let out a startled yell as a wave of sheer, chilling energy blasted outward. The pressure knocked him backward onto the damp earth. The second guard staggered back, drawing a defensive dagger, his eyes wide with sudden disbelief. "What... what kind of trick is that?!" Marcus spat, scrambling to his feet, his jaw working in shock as he stared at me. I stood frozen, looking down at my hands. A faint, glowing silver mist trailed off my fingers before evaporating into the crisp air. The mark over my heart throbbed with a slow, powerful rhythm—not like a panicked heartbeat, but like a heavy, ancient drum. "Stay away from me," I said. My voice didn't sound like the timid girl who spent her mornings washing linens in the infirmary. It echoed with a quiet, resonant weight that made both guards visibly hesitate. Marcus bared his fangs, his wolf instincts trying to surface to intimidate me, but the sheer cold radiating from my frame made him take a step back instead. "Get out of here," Marcus growled, trying to cover his hesitation with anger. "Go to the border! If you ever step foot inside the main village again, you'll be treated as a trespasser!" I didn't wait for them to say another word. I turned my back on the Bloodmoon Pack and walked straight into the dark, whispering canopy of the forest. For hours, I walked north. The cold night air nipped at my face, but internally, I felt strange—warmed by the mysterious power pulsing beneath my skin. As the full moon reached its peak directly above, the silver light illuminated hidden roots and treacherous rocks along the path, guiding my steps through the dense terrain. I stopped by a quiet, crystal-clear stream to catch my breath and wash the dust from my face. Kneeling on the mossy bank, I cupped the icy water in my hands and drank deeply. When I looked down into the water's surface, I gasped. The reflection looking back at me wasn't quite the girl I knew. My dark hair seemed glossier, and the silver ring around my pupils—usually barely visible—was glowing with a soft, luminous light. I pulled down the collar of my tunic, staring at the skin above my heart. Etched into my skin was a delicate, intricate mark shaped like a crescent moon surrounded by ancient symbols. It wasn't a wolf mark, and it certainly wasn't a mate bond. It was something entirely different. The Guardian's Seal, a soft whisper echoed in the back of my mind. It didn't sound like a wolf's inner voice; it sounded like a collective echo of ancestors waking from a long sleep. The ancient line rises. Before I could ponder the voice, the bushes across the stream rustled violently. I snapped my head up, drawing my strength inward as three massive shapes stepped out from the treeline. They weren't Bloodmoon wolves. Their fur was jet black, their eyes glowing an intense amber, and their aura was so heavy that the ambient noise of the forest went completely silent. It was a Nightshade Pack patrol. The lead wolf—a massive beast nearly twice the size of a standard Enforcer—lowered its head, letting out a low, rumbling growl that vibrated through the ground beneath my knees. It took a slow, deliberate step across the shallow stream, its fierce gaze locked entirely on me. Instead of panic, a strange sense of calm settled over me. I stood up slowly, meeting the beast's gaze without lowering my head. My old life as a helpless Omega was over. Whatever lay across this river, I was ready to face it.
