Chapter 1:The Golden Thread Burns
The Moon Ceremony was supposed to be the best night of my life.
Instead, it became the night my entire world shattered into jagged pieces.
The Great Hall of the Bloodmoon Pack was suffocatingly warm, filled with the rich scent of roasting meats, spiced wine, and the underlying pine-and-earth undertones of over two hundred wolves. Overhead, iron chandeliers held dozens of flickering candles, casting long, dancing shadows against the ancient stone walls. Outside, the full moon hung high in a pitch-black sky, radiating a quiet, silver power that pulsed through the veins of everyone present.
Everyone except me.
I stood near the back of the hall, my back pressed lightly against a cold stone pillar. My hands nervously smoothed down the front of my simple white tunic. As an Omega, I was used to blending into the background. I had no towering stature, no fierce aura, and no trace of elemental magic. To the rest of the pack, Aria was just the quiet orphan girl who helped in the infirmary—harmless, weak, and easily overlooked.
Except by Lucian.
My gaze drifted toward the center dais, where Lucian stood flanked by his father, the aging Alpha, and the pack elders. At twenty-one, Lucian was everything an Alpha should be: tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp dark eyes and an intimidating aura that made lesser wolves bow their heads in instinctual submission.
For years, we had shared quiet moments away from the judging eyes of the pack. Secret meetings in the whispering woods, shared laughter by the river, and promises spoken under the cover of night. He had sworn that the moment he stepped into his title as Alpha, he would claim me as his mate, regardless of my low status.
“They don't see what I see, Aria,” he had whispered into my hair just last week. “You are my heart. No rank will ever change that.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat, holding onto those memories like a lifeline as the ceremony began.
The old Alpha stepped forward, his deep voice booming over the quieted crowd. "Members of the Bloodmoon Pack! Tonight, under the sacred light of the full moon, my son Lucian takes his place as your leader. And under this same moon, the Goddess shall reveal the thread of fate that binds him to his rightful Luna!"
A cheer echoed through the hall, wild and fierce. Wolves howled, thumping their fists against heavy wooden tables.
Lucian stepped forward to the center of the altar. Beside him stood Lady Sienna, the daughter of the Sunridge Pack's Alpha. She was gorgeous—tall, regal, dressed in silk woven with gold thread, her golden hair cascading down her back like a waterfall. She smirked slightly, her posture radiating supreme confidence. The Sunridge Pack possessed strong offensive magic and vast territories. An alliance with them would make the Bloodmoon Pack virtually untouchable.
I felt a tight knot coil in my stomach, but I forced myself to breathe. Trust him, I told myself. Trust the bond.
"Let the Moon Goddess reveal the mate of the Alpha!" the elder declared, raising a silver bowl of sacred water.
Lucian closed his eyes and raised his hands toward the skylight above. A beam of pure moonlight pierced through the glass, landing directly upon him.
Suddenly, a warm, golden pulse flared in the center of my chest.
My breath hitched. The mate bond—dormant until this exact moment—snapped awake. It felt like a warm, glowing thread stretching from my heart across the crowded room, locking onto Lucian. The sensation was overwhelming, filled with a sudden, aching surge of affection and recognition. The Goddess had spoken. I was his.
Across the room, Lucian’s eyes snapped open. His dark gaze locked straight onto mine through the crowd. I saw the sudden shock in his eyes, the heavy flare of recognition in his posture. He felt it too. The golden thread connected us, vibrating with absolute truth.
For a single, fleeting second, hope soared in my chest.
Then, Lucian looked away.
He didn't move toward me. He didn't speak my name. Instead, his gaze shifted to Sienna, who was watching him with a calculated smile. Then he looked at his father, whose jaw was set in a hard, uncompromising line. The message was silent, but crystal clear: An Omega cannot be Luna. An Omega brings nothing to our pack.
The silence in the room stretched, heavy and expectant. The crowd was waiting for the golden light to visibly flare between the Alpha and his chosen partner. But the light around Lucian remained still, waiting for his spoken acceptance.
Lucian took a slow, deliberate breath. He squared his shoulders, his jaw tightening as he looked back at me one last time. His eyes were cold, stripped of every promise he had ever whispered in the dark.
He raised his voice, clear and loud enough to cut through the quiet hall like a blade.
"I, Alpha Lucian of the Bloodmoon Pack, hereby reject you, Aria, as my mate."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
A collective gasp echoed through the hall. Heads snapped in my direction as the invisible weight of the rejection tore through the air.
The golden thread connecting my heart to his didn't just snap—it ignited. A agonizing, searing heat flared in my chest, feeling as though someone had reached into my ribcage and sliced my soul in half. I staggered backward, my back hitting the cold stone pillar hard as I gasped for air that wouldn't come. Tears stung my eyes, blinding me with raw, burning agony.
"I accept Lady Sienna of the Sunridge Pack as my Luna," Lucian continued, his voice completely steady, void of any regret. "For the strength and future of Bloodmoon!"
The hall erupted into thunderous applause and cheers, instantly drowning out my agonizing silence. Sienna stepped forward, wrapping her arm through Lucian's, casting a triumphant, contemptuous look over the crowd toward where I stood trembling.
Nobody looked at me with pity. They looked at me with disgust and annoyance—as if my very existence was an embarrassment to their great moment.
"An Omega thought she could be Luna?" someone sneered nearby.
"Delusional. She's lucky he didn't banish her on the spot."
Pain radiated through every inch of my body, so intense I could barely stand. The rejection bond burned, trying to consume me from the inside out. I pressed a trembling hand against my chest, feeling my heart hammering violently behind my ribs.
Why? my mind screamed. Why promise me everything if you were just going to destroy me?
Lucian met my eyes across the roaring crowd. There was no apology in his face. Only cold, political ambition.
As the burning pain reached a fever pitch, something strange happened deep within me.
The fire of the broken bond didn't extinguish—it shifted. The suffocating heat suddenly turned icy cold, radiating outward from my spine to the tips of my fingers. A strange, ancient vibration echoed in the back of my mind, like a long-forgotten melody waking up after centuries of sleep.
Underneath my tunic, completely hidden from sight, a faint, silver rune flickered against my skin right over my heart, glowing with a soft, ethereal light before sinking beneath my flesh.
My tears stopped.
The crushing grief didn't vanish, but beneath it, a cold, unyielding spark ignited. The golden thread was gone, severed completely by his pride. But in its place, something far older, far darker, and infinitely stronger was beginning to stir.
I straightened my posture, lifting my chin as I looked directly at the man who had just discarded me.
He had rejected the weak Omega girl.
He had no idea what he had just woken up.
