The morning frost crunched beneath the heavy boots of the Nightshade vanguard as we approached the southern border.
A thick, quiet mist hung over the roaring river—the natural line dividing Nightshade land from Bloodmoon territory. Beyond the water stood a squad of ten heavily armed Bloodmoon Enforcers. At the front of the line, mounted on a massive black horse, was Lucian.
Seeing him again sent a sudden, instinctual jolt through my chest. Less than twenty-four hours ago, he had stood in the Great Hall and shattered my heart without a second thought. Now, wearing his polished Alpha armor and flanked by his father's guards, he looked every bit the ruthless ruler he aspired to be.
Beside me, Alpha Kaelen moved with relaxed, dangerous grace. He stopped a few feet from the riverbank, his broad shoulders squared and hands resting lightly at his sides. I stepped up to his left, head held high, refusing to hide behind him.
Across the water, Lucian’s eyes scanned the Nightshade patrol until they landed directly on me. For a split second, shock registered on his face—rapidly replaced by a scowl of intense irritation.
"Kaelen," Lucian’s voice boomed across the river, cold and demanding. "You are harboring a runaway Omega from my pack. She fled after the Mate Ceremony and stole valuable items from our infirmary. Hand her over immediately."
A low, rumbling laugh escaped Kaelen’s chest. The sound carried across the mist, dripping with disdain.
"A runaway thief, Lucian?" Kaelen replied, his amber eyes narrowing. "That is an interesting story. My scouts report that your Enforcers dragged her to the northern border under your direct orders and abandoned her. You banished her, Alpha. By pack law, the moment she stepped across the neutral boundary, she ceased to be Bloodmoon property."
Lucian’s jaw clenched tightly. He reined his horse back half a step, his knuckles white against the leather. "She is an unbonded Omega of my pack. Her place is where I decide it is. I am demanding her return under the Northern Accord."
"The Northern Accord applies to criminals and fugitives, not discarded mates," Kaelen countered smoothly, taking a slow step toward the river's edge. "And Aria is no longer an unbonded Omega. She is under the direct protection of the Nightshade Citadel."
"Protection?" Lucian sneered, looking directly at me with contempt. "She is a powerless girl with no family line! Why would the mighty Nightshade Pack waste time on an Omega who couldn't even hold a basic mate connection?"
The words were meant to cut, to drag me back into the small, helpless box he had kept me in for years.
I took a deliberate step forward, moving past Kaelen’s shadow until I stood right at the water's edge. The cool mountain wind rustled my dark hair, but I didn't blink.
"Look at me, Lucian," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but carried a resonant weight that made the horses across the river shift uneasily.
Lucian frowned, startled by my tone. "Aria, stop this foolishness. You are making a mistake. Return now and I might lessen your sentence at the border outpost."
"I made no mistake," I said softly. "You rejected me because you thought I was weak. You thought I was nothing without your title and your protection."
I closed my eyes briefly, reaching deep down into the center of my chest where the crescent seal rested. I didn't summon the magic out of anger or fear; I summoned it to stand as an equal.
A brilliant, pale silver glow burst from my collarbone, illuminating the dark river mist. The air around the border plummeted in temperature. Ice crystals raced across the surface of the river, freezing the fast-moving water into solid, gleaming glass within seconds. Silver energy spiraled up my arms, trailing off my fingertips like liquid moonlight.
The Bloodmoon Enforcers gasped, their horses rearing back in panic.
Lucian’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. He stared at the frozen river, then at the silver aura wrapping around my body, his mouth slightly open in absolute disbelief.
"What... what is that?" Lucian stammered, his wolf instincts surging to the surface in confusion. "That isn't Omega magic. What did you do?!"
"This is who I have always been," I replied, my silver-ringed eyes meeting his dark ones. "You were just too blind to see it."
Kaelen stepped up beside me, resting a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder. The contrast of his dark aura next to my silver light created an imposing, formidable image.
"You discarded a Moon Guardian, Lucian," Kaelen said, his voice echoing over the frozen river like thunder. "The Bloodmoon Pack has forfeited any claim to her. If you or your Enforcers step one foot across this ice, it will be treated as an act of war against Nightshade."
Lucian looked from the frozen river to Kaelen, and finally back to me. The political alliance he had traded me for suddenly felt hollow compared to the raw, ancient power standing across the border. Panic flashed deep within his eyes—the realization that he had handed his greatest asset straight to his rival.
"This isn't over, Kaelen," Lucian spat, trying to salvage his pride as he forced his agitated horse around. "She belongs to Bloodmoon!"
"She belongs to no one," Kaelen growled back.
With a final, furious glare, Lucian gestured to his squad, and the Bloodmoon Enforcers retreated back into the shadows of their forest.
As their footsteps faded into the distance, I let out a long breath and pulled my power back inward. The silver light gently faded from my skin, leaving behind only the solid path of ice across the water.
Kaelen looked down at me, a genuine, rare smile softening his sharp features. "You handled that exceptionally well, Aria."
"He knows now," I said, looking at the retreating dust on the horizon. "He won't stop."
"Let him try," Kaelen replied, turning back toward the Citadel. "Now he knows what he threw away—and we have a war to prepare for."
