The Grand Valorian Opera House was bathed in amber light, a monument to old money and carefully laundered sins.
On gala nights, the city’s elite gathered to trade political favors over crystal flutes of champagne, completely insulated from the violence that funded their lifestyles. Tonight, however, the atmosphere was charged with a different kind of electricity. The news of the Pier 9 explosion had rippled through the underworld, and every eye in the ballroom was scanning for signs of weakness in the Romano empire.
Damiano Romano stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, the epitome of ruthless elegance in a midnight-black tuxedo. His jaw was tightly set, his eyes sweeping the glittering crowd below. Beside him, a heavy weight hung in the air, the knowledge that his father had fast-tracked the wedding.
"Smile, Damiano," Cesare hissed from behind him, his voice a low, raspy command. The old boss stood with a cane, his posture rigid despite his failing health. "The vultures are watching. Show them the alliance is absolute."
Damiano didn't look at his father. "The vultures are watching because our docks are currently crawling with federal investigators. We should be managing the fallout, not parading ourselves." His jaw clenching as he speaks.
"We manage the fallout by showing them we are untouchable," Cesare countered, his eyes narrowing as the heavy double doors at the entrance opened. "Ah, eccola qui."(she’s here)
Damiano’s gaze shifted to the entrance, and for a fraction of a second, the breath caught in his throat.
Sophia De Luca walked in, flanked by her adoptive parents. She wore a stunning, backless gown of midnight-blue satin that seemed to shimmer like the deep ocean. Her dark brown hair was styled in soft, elegant waves cascading over one shoulder. She looked breathtaking, delicate, and entirely out of place among the wolves of Valoria.
As she looked up and caught Damiano’s eye, a flash of pure, unadulterated terror seemed to cross her face. She hesitated, her fingers tightening around her silk clutch, before her mother whispered something in her ear, prompting her to take a slow, trembling breath and ascend the stairs.
Damiano stepped forward to meet her at the landing. He extended his arm, his gray eyes locking onto hers. "Sophia," he murmured, his voice softening just enough for her ears alone. "Sei bellissima."( You’re beautiful)
"Thank you, Damiano," she whispered, her voice carrying a fragile tremor. She slid her gloved hand over his forearm. He could feel the slight, nervous shaking of her fingers through the fabric of his sleeve. It triggered that same rare, protective ache in his chest. She had been trapped in a café while a bomb went off just days ago, she shouldn't have been dragged to a high-society circus tonight. He felt a guilt pang in his chest. “Prometto di proteggerla, qualunque cosa accada”, he frowned and muttered to himself. (I promise to protect her no matter what)
"Stay close to me," he instructed gently, guiding her down into the ballroom. "You don't have to speak to anyone you don't want to."
"I... I appreciate that," she said, looking up at him with wide, trusting green eyes. "It feels like everyone is staring at us. Like they expect something terrible to happen."Her tone rippled like water disturbed by a sudden, light tremor.
"Let them expect it," Damiano said coldly, casting a lethal glare at a group of Lambordos backed politicians who immediately looked away. "No one touches you while you are with me."
Sophia offered a small, wolfish smile, leaning into his side as if seeking shelter beneath his massive frame.
Beneath her flawless, submissive mask, Sophia’s mind was operating with terrifying, cold efficiency. She felt the heavy, rigid muscle of Damiano's arm beneath her hand. She felt the absolute control he exuded. *He thinks he's my shield,* she thought, keeping her expression perfectly serene as they glided through the crowd. *He has no idea I pulled the pin on Pier 9.* “Stupido bastardo”, her face hardened a little. (Dumb bastard)
She looked around the room, subtly taking mental notes. Marco Costa was across the room, sweating profusely, downing scotch at a dangerous pace. The Costa family was clearly panicking about the Romano lockdown on the ports.
"Damiano, a word," a voice interrupted. It was Chief Justice Falcones, a man whose pockets were lined with Romano cash.
Damiano paused, turning to Sophia. "Excuse me for a moment. Leon is right by the pillars if you need anything. Don't wander off."
"I'll be right here," Sophia murmured obediently.
As Damiano stepped away to engage in a low-voiced, intense conversation with Falcone, Sophia maintained her fragile, lost-girl posture, slowly drifting toward a quieter corner of the ballroom near the heavy velvet curtains.
Ensuring she was out of direct line of sight from both Damiano and Leon, she opened her silk clutch. She pulled out her burner phone, shielding the screen with her body. A new message from her uncle was waiting:
*Costa is taking the bait. He believes the Romanos sank their own container to frame him for the Pier 9 blast. He's going to retaliate tonight. Watch for the signal.*
Sophia’s thumb hovered over the keys. She looked across the room at Damiano. He was listening to the judge, but his gray eyes were already cutting through the crowd, searching for her. When he spotted her by the curtains, the tension in his shoulders visibly eased, and he gave her a short, reassuring nod.
A sharp, unexpected pang of guilt stabbed at Sophia’s chest. He genuinely wanted to keep her safe. He treated her like something precious, something untainted by the blood of Valoria.
*No,* she fiercely reminded herself, her jaw tightening as she looked away. *He is a Romano. His family butchered mine. He carries the weight of their sins.*
She typed a swift reply to her uncle: *I'm in position. Let the Costas bleed him.*
She slid the phone back into her clutch just as Damiano walked back over, bypassing the crowd. "Let's dance," he said, his baritone leaving no room for argument. "My father is watching, and the Costas need to see we aren't distracted by their little tantrum at the docks."
"Of course," Sophia said softly, letting him lead her to the center of the ballroom floor.
The orchestra began a slow, haunting waltz. Damiano placed a large, calloused hand on her waist, pulling her closer than protocol dictated. Her scent was a sweet cloud of jasmine and vanilla, wrapping around his senses. Sophia placed her hand on his shoulder, her breathing intentionally shallow to mimic her nervous persona.
They moved together with surprising symmetry. Damiano was heavy, powerful, but fluid. They looked like a perfect match—the dark, imposing prince and his beautiful, delicate captive.
“Hai un profumo così buono principessa”. His voice was a soft breeze, brushing against her ear.( you smell so good princess)
“Grazie Damiano” she said softly, a traitorous blush crept on her face. (Thank you)
"Sei molto bravo in questo" Sophia whispered, looking up at him, her face inches from his. (You’re very good at this)
"I was forced to learn," Damiano murmured, his gray eyes locked onto hers, searching the green depths. "There is very little in this life I do for pleasure, Sophia. But this... I don't mind."
The honesty in his voice was suffocating. Sophia felt her breath hitch, a genuine physical reaction this time. For a terrifying second, the undercurrent of tension between them wasn't about revenge or survival—it was an intense, magnetic pull that threatened to blur the lines of her mission.
Before she could process the feeling, a sudden, sharp movement caught her eye through the glass windows overlooking the opera house courtyard.
A sleek black van had blown past the security gates.
Sophia’s assassin instincts screamed. The signal.
"Damiano" she gasped, her voice genuinely panicked this time as she grabbed his lapels.
Before he could answer, the heavy glass windows of the ballroom shattered inward in a spectacular explosion of shards and gunfire.
