Standing with a group of servers singing a jaunty version of Happy Birthday, Riley balanced a Butter Cake Bakery signature birthday cake on both hands—chocolate chiffon with inch-thick white sugar icing. Sweetie outdid herself with the design on top. With blue and green icing not only did she spell out “Happy Birthday, Easton,” she drew their school’s swimming team logo of intertwining dolphins in a turbulent sea at the center. Then she placed eighteen candles around the logo at exactly the same width apart so the flames and wax didn’t touch. Genius. Absolutely perfect. Easton’s grin was priceless.
