Family Trip!
"Sarrah!" Sarrah, who had been jumping on the bed, swirled around to look at dismayed Ma. The pillows that Ma had just washed and sun bathed were scattered merrily on the floor. "Sarrah." Ma's eyes softened whilst her voice grew a frightening tone. Sarrah looked at Ma apologetically. "Well," Ma said as she left the bedroom, "You have to clean them anyways, but if your speed does not fasten," Her eyes trailed across at Sarrah who lugged slowly and dutifully at the plump feather pillows. Sarrah felt a small pressure and her hand felt like lead. "I'm making pancakes, they won't last forever though.." Ma left the room, making Sarrah even more anxious for them. As soon as she was done, she dashed to the kitchen, led by a drifting smell of golden pancakes. "Oh Ma! What smell! Mm, may I?" Chattered Sarrah as she took her plate. "Yes, you might, pour a glass of buttermilk for yourself too." Ma answered. As she neared Ma and the just-made pancakes, she held her plate steadily, to stop any of it from falling off. She watched as Ma lifted the top blanket layer and stacked six of them on it. Soon the pancakes were covered in sugar dust and syrup with berries.
As she ate, she noticed as the room grew stuffier and intolerably hot. "My, oh Karrie, open the window!" She begged as soon the pancakes felt too hot to eat. Karrie rushed to open the window and a soft breeze flew into the room in a welcoming way. "Well, well, I do think the weather will melt us away! Not if I had anything to do with it!" Ma rolled up her sleeves and locked herself in her room. "What's Ma talking about?" Asked Raine and trudged to the door. Ma soon came out with her wallet and a phone. As she looked in her wallet she started to talk insistently to someone on the other end of the line. "Yes I would like to book the cottage for next week. No, I am not sure of that, but I would like to borrow it for a week. No, a week. Yes, yes. Later sir." She let the phone fall onto the couch. Then she looked at her four children before sending a tired smile creeping onto her face. "Mama are we going on a holiday?" Karrie asked sheepishly. Mama's face grinned and nodded, "The mountains, the air shall be cooler in the morning and night, ensuring our sleep." She explained. Mama's family had been in unrestful sleep all month, and so the children found the news exciting and special. "I'm going to save my pennies, who knows I might need them!" Exclaimed Raine. "We will leave the day after tomorrow, so pack your bags tomorrow night." Ma instructed. Mama's children were in such excitement that hardly anyone knew where to start. Laura found her sisters fussing over the cabinet, as the room flew with clothes. "Mercy! If you want to pack, get your cases of mess and come with them empty!" The siblings took some time to listen but soon they were in front of her. The game was to get the appointed clothes in time before the timer came out. Laura took charge of the game. "First get your summer dresses, and the other one that has white-and-red petticoats underneath." She instructed. Everyone ran in such a comical mell-pell mad dash for the door, that Ma could not help but laugh though the pity they made of her newly washed sheets. Her face seemed twisted, as if her lips wanted to say something but nothing could ever get out except, "Careful children, oh! The cloth-" and went silent abruptly. Laura smiled at her wistfully as she walked out the door with a gleeful twinkle that jumped merrily in her eyes. Mama took a deep breath as she waltzed into the room. As her eyes met with the savage and her legs crumpled as she gasped and hoarsely whispered, "Oh my.." but she soon got up and she threw her hands up as she slumped, precariously leaning on a tilted chair. She watched as the game was played over and over again til the bags were full and the unchosen clothes laid sadly treaded on the floor like a thin covering linen cloth. It was all too soon in the evening as the sisters packed and repacked their clothes so as not to lose count. Alas there was another mess awaiting for Ma's powerful hands to care for. As supper was finished, Pa looked across the table towards his hungry flock. "What happened? You look like you have decided to run after a bird." At once the children spilled their excited feeling as Pa's face grew faint. Pa looked towards Ma, "Go to sleep, you will need it." Pa told her jokingly as casted glances were thrown towards each other. Soon, the sun came out gloriously, it knew that a nice big family with nice little girls were going on a vacation to the mountains, and had to make the day special, explained the innocent Karrie, she had the most sleep, thus her energy was brimmed. Mama and Papa soon were able to hurry the children into the car, after 4 hours of tiring cries and groans, finally, the car stopped in front of a large cottage. "Oh Herbert, I thought I asked for a small one, you didn't call him without asking me, did you?" A small crinkle of laughter glimmered in Pa's eyes. Soon there was a mess of sounds that came from the car door. Oh, the stumble! Each child raced upon each other, often a cry of disappointment would come out from the hustle until everyone got into the car in an arranged manner. After a grueling hour of traveling with many a fight and fidget, the family soon arrived at the cottage.
