EPISODE 1: The Maid Luna
I was never a Luna. I was the maid who happened to share his bed.
My name is Catherine. I am 24 years old, and I have been married to Alpha Andel Greck for four years. I have given him three children—two boys who are twins, Leo and Liam, 4 years old, and a girl, Lily, 3 years old.
And I scrub the floors of my own house on my knees.
This morning, I woke up at 5 AM, like always. I made breakfast for the pack. Forty eggs. Bacon. Bread. I packed lunch boxes for Leo and Liam for their wolf training. I washed Lily’s fever medicine cup from last night.
Andel came downstairs at 7 AM. He didn't look at me.
He kissed Lena on the forehead.
Lena is my own blood sister. My older sister. She came to live with us after our parents died in a car crash seven years ago. I begged Andel to take her in.
I thought I was saving her.
Lena is now wearing my robe. The silk one Andel bought me when Lily was born.
She has never been pregnant, but she wears it better than me, she says.
“Morning, sis,” Lena said, sipping my coffee. “Andel says you burned the bacon again. You really should try harder. You’re embarrassing us in front of the pack.”
Andel laughed.
“She’s trying her best. Her best is just… not much.”
The pack women in the kitchen laughed too.
My son Leo tugged at my dress.
“Mommy, are you coming to my training today?”
Before I could answer, Mia answered for me.
Mia is Andel’s sister. She lives with us too because Andel says family must stay together.
“Your mother has floors to clean, sweetie,” Mia said. “She doesn’t have time for Alpha training. That’s for real Lunas. Like Auntie Lena.”
Lena picked up Leo.
“I’ll come watch you, baby. Mommy Lena will be there.”
Mommy Lena.
My son started calling her that three months ago.
I taught him to say Mommy.
Now he gives it to her.
I went back to the sink and kept washing dishes.
My hands are always red. Cracked.
Andel says they are too ugly to hold him at night.
Last night, he didn’t come to our room. He slept in Lena’s room.
He said Lily had a nightmare and Lena was comforting her. Lily’s room is next to Lena’s.
I heard them laughing until 2 AM.
I am the Luna of this pack.
But I sleep alone in the small room behind the kitchen.
Because Andel says I snore when I am pregnant.
And even though I am not pregnant now, he got used to the quiet.
Tonight, pack dinner is happening. All the Alphas are coming.
Andel told me to wear the blue dress. The one that hides my stretch marks.
Lena told me she is wearing the red one.
Andel’s favorite.
I have a bad feeling about tonight.
