OLIVIA I couldn’t hold back the tears as one of the officers took my hands and placed a cuff on them. I stared at Williams, hoping he would change his mind, but he returned with a contemptuous look, as I was taken out of the hotel. I was unable to tell if he was disappointed or sad about what just happened, but one thing was certain - he hated me at that moment. I could see the smirk on Caroline’s face when I was being dragged out. On her face was a smile of victory, like a long-term enemy had finally been defeated. She loved to see me in such a position. I had never felt so humiliated my whole life, with passersby staring at me as I was led into the police car. It was as if everyone paused what they were doing and focused on me while I was taken away. I wished the ground would open up and take me all on, but none of that was happening. It seemed the Earth was also enjoying the drama, which was my downfall. “I swear! This is all a mistake. I was set up. Believe me, please. Let me just talk to my husband. He’ll hear me out, please”, I begged the officer that led me into the cell. “Typical! Blame it on a mistake! Now you should know better than stepping on the toes of Caroline McLaren”. He laughed as he locked the cell gate. As he walked away, more tears streamed down my cheeks. I was well aware that Caroline hated me, but I never imagined she’d ever plot against me. All the time, I thought I was about to finally do something to get the validation of my husband’s family, not knowing they had their own plans for me; evil plans. I couldn’t believe I was in a place meant for criminals, as I scanned around the cold dark room I was thrown into. How could Williams have done this to me? My heart was shattered into pieces. He wasn’t always like that to me. While we were still dating, he was the perfect gentleman, always putting my happiness first. He went against his family’s orders when they were not in support of our relationship because, according to them, Goats had nothing to do with Zebras. Even when his close friends suggested I was just a gold digger after his money alone, he warned them against insinuating such. He had changed from the loving man I used to know during our dating days to one who had nothing but contempt for me. His family, who never approved of me because of my poor background, contributed to how he had been treating me recently. I cried my eyes out as I sank into the bed. I never expected Williams would watch me go through such humiliation. It even hurt me more because I was pregnant with his child. I wiped my tears and placed my hand over my belly. I was with child, but Williams wasn’t aware. I was already two months gone, but just found out a few days ago. I had wanted to tell him, but he was never around and didn’t care to answer my calls. I couldn’t tell Caroline either for fear of what she would say about it. She might end up cussing me out for trying to bear a “low-class” baby for the almighty McLaren family. The only person that knew about the pregnancy was Rose, and she also advised I keep the news until I saw Williams again. “Everything will be alright, baby. I promise” I said to my belly, hoping the baby in there would listen. “Daddy is going to come take us back soon. I promise” The next four days in the cell were the most torturous days of my life. I neither heard from nor saw Williams. He didn’t bother visiting me. Nobody did; not even my best friend, Rose. I wasn’t even given the chance to speak to a lawyer, which I believed was all part of Caroline’s influence to keep me there for a long time. “You didn’t think of that when you tried to sell off his company, right? No lawyer can save you now, miss” they’d usually say when I ask. On the evening of the fifth day, I was lying on the prison bed brooding over everything, when I heard the cell being unlocked. My eyes widened with hope as they met Barr. Smith, The McLaren family lawyer. “Lucky for you, the McLaren family have decided to have mercy on you. They have dropped the charges”, the officer said as he unlocked my cell. My heart leaped with joy; a glimmer of hope. Williams was finally going to apologize to me for all that happened. I had been vindicated at last. Soon, I'll be united with my husband after he apologizes for not believing me. “Thank you… Thank you so much” I joyfully said to Barr. Smith. Are they here too? Williams?” I asked, wiping my tears. I walked outside the cell, looking around for any signs of Williams, but he was nowhere near. “He isn’t here with me. He just sent me over to get you released”, he clarified. I was disappointed, but still kept a smile. “Williams must be very busy, but I’m sure he'll be waiting for me at home”, I reassured myself. Recently, I knew Williams to be a proud man when it came to apologizing for his mistakes. He hardly admitted to being wrong whenever we had issues. But something inside of me just made me believe he would come pleading for not trusting me. Smith walked down to the main station and asked me to follow him, which I did. I had my bag and gadgets taken from me during the arrest, so I was made to sign a few papers to get my properties back in my custody. “You? You had better be careful. Next time you make such a move, you might not be able to make it out of here in years”. The officer at the registration station threatened. He had a stern look on his face, like I had gotten on his bad side in a previous encounter. “I’ll make sure she faces the full wrath of the law if she ever gets in here again. Imagine trying to play a fast one on the McLarens. Such audacity!” His assistant chipped in, with his eyes raging against me. Their statements sparked some uncertainty in me. I thought the truth had been uncovered. I thought I was being released because Williams finally realized his mistake. What did they mean by “Next time you make such a move”? All these constituted heavy doubts in me, but regardless, I decided to stay hopeful and positive. “I’m sure it’s just their usual small talk to rile up inmates. Nothing serious. No reason to be worried, Olivia”, I assured myself, as I took a deep breath. I was done signing the papers and my property was handed back to me, of course, with a look of disgust on the officers’ faces, which I chose to ignore. “So… Did he send me a driver? Or would you be driving me home?” I asked Barr. Smith as I was searching through my bag for any missing items. “Uhm! About that… There’s something else I'd like to deliver to you”, he stressed. “What’s it?” My heart skipped. Without exchanging words, he searched his briefcase and handed me some papers from it. Just immediately, I felt my heart sink as I read the words boldly written on the top- OFFICIAL DIVORCE AGREEMENT.
