OLIVIA
“Ma’am, would you love to have anything?” The waiter walked up to me and asked.
“Not at all. I’m just here to see someone. She’ll be here soon” I replied with a smile, as she took her leave.
Why did I feel something was odd?
I had been sent to wait at the hotel by my sister in-law, Caroline MCLaren. Just like the other members of her family, she hated me from the first day Williams MCLaren, her brother, introduced me to the family, and the hatred even got worse as we finally got married about a year ago.
When she asked me to meet her at the hotel with some sealed documents she had given me the previous night, I felt it was a way to finally earn her acceptance, and in turn, get Williams to love me like he used to.
“Maybe, if I get this done, she’ll come to love and accept me into the family” I reassured myself.
My phone rang, cutting my thoughts short. I picked it hastily to see who the caller was- My best friend, Rose Hathaway.
“Hey, Olivia. I hope you’re not changing your mind on what she asked you to do” She asked.
“No. I’m already here, but something just feels off”
“Olivia, you are overthinking this. Just think of this as a way of finally earning her approval” She advised.
“I guess you’re right” I sighed.
We ended the call and I scanned through the hotel for any sign of Caroline, but there was none.
She was supposed to be there with me thirty minutes ago, but she was nowhere to be found. I tried reaching her phone, but she wasn’t picking either. This brought back my doubts once more.
I was about to go look outside, when a young man in a red T-shirt walked towards my table. He took a seat directly opposite mine and I stared at him like he was lost.
“Hello?” I said, slightly curious.
“Olivia Watson, right?” He said.
“Yes, I am. And you are?” I asked.
“Don’t bother about that. Where’s Caroline? She sent you instead?” He asked, looking around.
I guessed he was the person Caroline and I were supposed to meet at the hotel with the documents.
“Oh! Yeah…I mean, she ‘s supposed to be here too. I guess she’s caught up in traffic” I defended her.
I did not know who the client we were meeting was. I had never met him before and I needed Caroline then more than ever, so I wouldn’t blow it.
“Alright. You’re not having anything? Wine?” He beckoned the waiter.
“Not at all. Let’s just wait for Caroline, please” I declined.
Why was he acting all suspicious with the smile and all that?
“Alright then. Since you’re in a hurry, let’s get down to business. The papers” He demanded.
I had no idea what was inside the envelope and how to go about the conversation with the strange man. I had already annoyed him by declining his wine offer and any other thing I do to get him upset, would lead to Caroline detesting me even more.
I would never hear enough of the complaints and blames she would heap on me.
“You never do anything right!”
“I don’t know what Williams saw in you. You just messed everything up!” She would snap.
“She said that you already know what the envelope contains” I handed it over to him.
He took the envelope from me and unsealed it, looking through the papers within. He took quite a while on it, that I was growing impatient. I wished he could say something at least, instead of the random “Hmm” and “ Ohh” he dropped as he went through them.
About three minutes later, the door was opened and my husband, Williams stormed into the room, closely followed by Caroline. He had a serious look on his face, like he was called out from something important to come attend to something else.
“Where is it?” He demanded in a somewhat dangerous tone.
I felt some relief. At least, they would handle everything and ease me of my nervousness. As I proceeded to welcome him with a hug, he placed his hands on my chest, causing me to almost trip.
Before I could get back on my feet, Caroline landed a slap on my cheek, leaving me confused and in shock.
“You lying thief and scum of the Earth!” She said with disgust.
“What… what are you talking about, Caroline?” I was in shock, clutching my cheeks in pain.
“Don’t act like you don’t know what you’ve been doing behind my brother’s back! Stealing from him and giving the money to your lover right here! Now, you want to sell off his company he worked so hard for? You have met your Waterloo today, b***h!” She scoffed.
Williams snatched the papers from the strange man and going through it, his eyes lit in shock. He turned to my direction and fumed.
“You woman! What have I ever done to you?!” He spoke coldly.
“What… What are you talking about, baby?” I stammered, my voice getting lost.
I looked through the papers too and my eyes were beyond shocked. They were official ownership papers of Williams’ Company and I was unknowingly about to sell them off to the strange man.
“Williams, I swear, I never knew the content of the documents” I begged.
“How could you do this, Olivia? After everything I’ve done for you?” He said.
“Trust me, I know nothing about this. Caroline… Caroline, you sent me here to wait for you. Talk to him, please”
“Oh! Don’t you try to implicate me here. You are an evil gold-digger and your schemes have been fished out”
“Baby, you have to believe me”
“Shut up! Shut the f**k up, Olivia! Enough with the lies! You are even worse than I thought!” Williams thundered.
I couldn’t believe what was happening to me. Still in my thoughts, I heard Caroline call out on her phone,
“You can come in now” She said.
“I swear by everything I stand for, I didn’t do anything. This was all a plot!” I pleaded.
“That’s left for the police to decide. Take her away! And I don’t ever want to see you close to me!” Williams said, his eyes flashing with contempt.
