Chapter One: The Contract
Maya Delaine stood at the edge of the bustling city square, the cold wind biting through her thin coat. Her fingers clutched the crumpled eviction notice, the ink smudged from earlier tears. The world moved around her—cars honked, people chatted, life continued—but for Maya, time had stalled. Just hours ago, she had been unceremoniously fired from her job at Kessler Enterprises. No warnings, no explanations. Just a cold, impersonal email stating her services were no longer required. It was as if the universe had conspired to strip her of everything she held dear. Her phone buzzed, jolting her from her thoughts. A message from the hospital: her mother's condition had worsened, and the bills were piling up. Maya's heart clenched. She had promised to take care of her mother, to ensure she received the best treatment. But now, with no job and mounting debts, that promise seemed impossible to keep. As she stared blankly at the towering skyscraper of Kessler Enterprises, a sleek black car pulled up beside her. The window rolled down, revealing a man in a sharp suit and dark sunglasses. "Miss Delaine?" he inquired. She nodded hesitantly. "Mr. Kessler would like to see you." Maya's brow furrowed. "Adrian Kessler? The CEO?" The man nodded. "Yes. He has a proposition for you." --- The ride to the Kessler penthouse was silent. Maya's mind raced with possibilities. Why would Adrian Kessler, the man responsible for her firing, want to see her? She had never met him in person, but his reputation preceded him—a ruthless businessman with a heart of stone. The elevator doors opened to reveal a lavish penthouse, its floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the city. Adrian Kessler stood by the window, his back to her. "Miss Delaine," he began, turning to face her. His piercing blue eyes met hers, and for a moment, Maya felt exposed. "Mr. Kessler," she replied, her voice steady despite the turmoil within. He gestured to a chair. "Please, sit." Maya complied, her posture rigid. "I'll get straight to the point," Adrian said, taking a seat across from her. "I need a wife." Maya blinked, unsure if she had heard correctly. "Excuse me?” He leaned forward, his gaze intense. "A fake marriage. For one year. It's a business arrangement. You'll be compensated generously." She stared at him, disbelief evident on her face. "Why me?" Adrian sighed. "You're discreet, intelligent, and currently unemployed. Plus, you have no ties that would complicate matters." Maya's mind reeled. This was absurd. Yet, the image of her mother in a hospital bed flashed before her eyes. "What's the catch?" she asked. He smirked. "You must live with me, attend public events as my wife, and maintain the facade. In return, you'll receive a monthly stipend and a lump sum at the end of the year." Maya considered the offer. It was insane. But it could solve her financial problems and ensure her mother's treatment. "I need time to think," she said. Adrian nodded. "Of course. But I need an answer by tomorrow." --- That night, Maya sat by her mother's bedside, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest. She thought of the sacrifices her mother had made, the dreams deferred, the hardships endured. Could she really enter a sham marriage for money? Was she willing to compromise her values? But then, was it really a compromise if it meant saving her mother's life? The next morning, Maya stood once again in Adrian Kessler's penthouse. "I'll do it," she said, her voice firm. Adrian nodded, a hint of satisfaction in his eyes. "Excellent. We'll begin preparations immediately." As Maya left the penthouse, contract in hand, she couldn't shake the feeling that she had just made a deal with the devil.
