Mona's POV
I met Sara in our sophomore year. I had put out an advertisement for a roommate on the
school portal, and everyone who showed up was either too crazy, too dirty, too loud, or just a
drug addict.
I was almost giving up the search when this nerdy-looking girl showed up at my doorstep. I
asked her what she hated the most and she answered.
"People. I hate being around people. I love my peace, I don't like hanging out around so
many people, I took the option of having most of my courses online because I wanted to
avoid people.
"My favorite park is abandoned, my best friend is a stray dog, I don't like social media, I
prefer Google."
And that was it. She passed the interview and became my roommate.
This was the last week of our school life and we needed to have a photo shoot for the
graduation album, and I knew pigs would have to fly before Sara would take pictures. I knew
she was stalling, but I was still willing to try.
"Take a bath and let's go get some ice cream, I promise you'd like it". I said to Sara.
"Just briefly okay, you know I still got cramps". Sara said knowing that I may have plans of us
getting back late at night.
"Yes, love, it's going to be brief, and we'll be back". I said as she went into the bathroom.
While she had her bath I was picking out a dress for her.
Sara kept stopping to pet every dog we met as we walked down the street, and they
appeared to also like her. She had always had a thing for puppies.
We finally got to the ice cream shop and took a seat.
"Is it just me or does the ice cream shop look bigger than the last time we visited". Sara
asked me.
"I think it's just you because nothing has changed. The last time you came out here was
about five months ago. So, you may have forgotten how it looked.
"Do you remember Teddy the manager"? I asked, nodding towards Teddy serving ice cream
and snacks behind the counter.
"He got married, and he and his wife are expecting a baby. That happened within those
months you didn't come out here". I continued.
"But it didn't feel that long to me, it felt like that was just two weeks ago". Sara said
innocently.
"You need to start going out more, or else you'll miss out on a lot of things. Meet new people,
you can't be alone all the time, we'll graduate soon". I spoke frankly."But we'll be together after graduation, won't we? Are you moving out?" Sara asked
wide-eyed, searching my face for answers.
"No, I'm not moving out, yet. But we are about to be graduates, and we'll start putting in for
jobs, and internships and start seeing less and less of each other.
"I'm just worried that when that time comes, you'd be alone and become more distant from
other people". I spoke to her matter of factly.
The waiter brought our orders of vanilla ice cream and chocolate toppings. I started eating
mine right away, but I noticed Sara was lost in thoughts.
"Your ice cream is melting, what's wrong Sara, you seem lost in thoughts".
"So, what should I do? I really want to be able to communicate with other people, and make
friends, but I can't. I always find myself stuttering and tongue-tied.
"Do you know that I once tried a shrink? The crazy lady took my money and still, nothing
changed." Sara sounded annoyed.
"Wait, what? You got a shrink?" I asked amusingly.
"Yes silly, it wasn't funny so don't laugh, I paid two hundred dollars for four sessions and
nothing changed". Sara explained.
By the time Sara was done talking, I was cackling with laughter, because I never knew she
felt the need to see a shrink. A shrink? It sounded too funny coming from Sara.
”Are you done laughing now? Silly". Sara retorted and rolled her eyes.
"I am done laughing now, I'm sorry I'm laughing so much". I said, still trying to hold myself
from laughing.
"So, what should I do Mona? I don't want to graduate and become broke, then a burden
because I'm too timid to interact with people, or go to work". Sara said pleading with her
eyes like a lost puppy.
As I sat there, I thought: for Sara to go see a shrink means she wants to change, that means
she'll be fine after graduation.
I was so happy about this. So, I decided to tell her about the job opening at Citadel Secure
Solutions. There was an opening there for fresh graduates.
The CEO Mr. Kyle Quincy needed a focused and efficient Executive Assistant, and Sara
seemed to tick all the boxes.
"I heard of a job opening somewhere and you fit into almost all the criteria Sara". I said
looking at her with a big smile on my face.
"Okay, I'll apply for the job". Sara said.
