Chapter 1
Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us!
What, who is that? Am I going insane?
Of course, not silly. I've been here all along. I have been waiting for this day since we were born.
Lia jumped out of bed and looked around and saw no one. Was she dreaming? It felt so real though.
No, you are not dreaming, I am here and I am here to stay. But... I will let mom and dad explain everything to you, talk to you soon. Oh and once again, happy 18th birthday.
Then there was silence.
Lia shook her head. What on earth was that? Like I know that people have voices in their heads, but that felt like something different. It felt like a whole separate person. But it couldn't have been a person. I am alone here. Also, what did that voice mean when it said it would wait for mom and dad to explain things to me? Explain what exactly? And why was it referring to my parents as though they are OUR parents? Lia looked around her room again. She noticed that her bedroom door was slightly open and through the c***k in the door, she saw her parents looking at her. The look on her mom's face told her that they had something big, something HUGE, to tell her.
"MOM! DAD!" Lia screamed, "I can see you standing over there, so you had better come in here this instance!" she continued. "Young lady, do not speak to your mother and me that way. You may be 18 and technically an adult, but that does not mean you need to start being disrespectful," John said. "John,..." Lisa started saying before being interrupted by John, "No honey, she needs to be respectful, that's all I'm saying. "John, let's just go inside and speak to her. We need to speak to her." Lisa said, making sure to say that last bit extra soft. The two parents walked into their daughter's room and sat at the foot of her bed, waiting to tell her something they knew would change her life and dreading that it had to happen on her birthday.
"Mom. Dad. I'm sorry about how I spoke before. It's just, I don't know. I feel like I am going crazy. Like I must be going crazy because there is no way to explain the dream that I had. Or at least I hope it was a dream. Because..." Lia was speaking so fast that her mother had to stop her. "Slow down baby girl, you are not going crazy," Lisa started saying to her daughter, "Your father and I have something that we need to tell you." At the end of his wife's sentence, John started to say, "Before we tell you this, I want you to understand that everything that your mother and I did, every decision we made, was made with your best interests at heart."
"Mom. Dad. Just tell me whatever it is you want to tell me. Please", Lia begged her parents. Lisa cleared her throat and started speaking, "Lia, your father and I, uhm. Our families. Uhm, how do I say this? We are different." Lia looked at her mom with a very confused look, "Mom, I know you and dad told me you moved here from a different country to start a new life. That's not new." "Lia, what, there is no easy way to say this," John started, saying, "Your mom is a werewolf, I am a vampire. We had to leave our homes to start over because our union is forbidden." "Hahahaha!!" Lia laughed. "Dad, be serious now, please. What do you and mom need to tell me?" John looked at his daughter very sternly and said, "I am being serious."
"Dad, vampires don't exist. Werewolves don't exist. That's just stuff that is made up, everyone knows this." Lia said, not wanting to believe a word that her father had just told her. "Babygirl, look at this," Lisa said, showing Lia the area on her neck where John had marked her all those years ago when they first made love. "That's just a tattoo, dad has one that is shaped slightly differently in the same place. It's not uncommon for couples to get matching tattoos", Lia said, trying to emphasize that she did not believe what her parents were telling her. "Lia, these are not tattoos, not in the human sense. There is no ink here. These are the marks your father and I gave each other to solidify our bond with each other. For our species, when mates mark each other, it symbolizes that they are united for eternity. It's basically similar to what humans do when they get married, but is deeper because we can always sense each other even when we are not in the same place", Lisa said, trying to make her daughter understand what she was saying.
"Stop saying that. We ARE human. I AM human", Lia said, with tears forming in her eyes. "Don't cry, princess," John said, trying to comfort his daughter. "Your mother and I have to tell you this, because now that you have come of age, you will start to experience some changes which we need you to be aware of and understand." "To tell you the truth, your mom and I are not completely sure which traits you will have more of given that you are a hybrid, but what we know for certain is that your powers will be coming to the front now that you have come of age. It would be irresponsible for us not to tell you and prepare you," John continued. "Traits? Powers? Hybrid? None of this makes sense, dad. Make it make sense."
Lisa started speaking to try and help to explain things, "Babygirl, as a werewolf, it means I am a shifter. I live in human form, but I have a wolf form that I can shift into. My wolf, although part of me, also has her own thoughts. She sees everything that I see while in human form and I see everything that she sees when in wolf form. I can speak to my wolf and she speaks to me. I believe you might have already had a similar experience just this morning." Lia looked at her mom, remembering the voice that had woken her up from her sleep. John started speaking "I don't shift but I do have some abilities. Apart from the superstrength that you might imagine, I can shimmer, so basically teleport myself to a different place. I can hear people's thoughts if I choose to. And the thing that requires the most control: I need blood to stay alive, so you might too. I have learned to control my thirst over time. I only feed once a month and I only feed on animal blood." At this point, Lia was looking at her parents as though they had 2 heads each, clearly struggling to comprehend what they were saying to her.
John looked at his wife, trying to get permission to do the only thing he knew would make his daughter believe what they were telling her. "Princess, I will show you something to hopefully help you make what we are saying real to you. It may seem unreal, maybe a little bit scary, but I need you to remember that this does not change anything, it does not change who your mother and I are." Lisa took a long breath and added, "Babygirl, your father and I will both show you, at the same time. Are you ready?" Lia looked at her parents and said nothing. John and Lisa nodded at each other and began to reveal themselves to their daughter. Lisa's white fur started appearing, then she was on all fours, and then before long, she was standing in front of her daughter in wolf form. John's eyes turned blood red and he drew out his fangs.
