Kane Maddox is a man accustomed to getting whatever he wants. A powerful businessman with an empire to protect, he has little patience for complications—until Nica Garcia walks into his world.

Quiet, composed, and exceptionally capable, Nica is the executive secretary to a prominent congresswoman. She prefers working behind the scenes, avoids unnecessary attention, and has no interest in becoming part of a billionaire's complicated life.

But Kane finds himself drawn to the woman who seems entirely unimpressed by his wealth, influence, and charm. The more he tries to understand her, the more he realizes that Nica is not someone who can easily be figured out.

Behind her modest position and unassuming nature are secrets she has carefully kept hidden. Secrets that even the most powerful people might not be prepared to uncover.

Kane thought he was falling for an ordinary woman.

He has no idea who he has just let into his life.

Chapter1(TheGala)
His name is a weapon in the heart of Texas oil country, but when Kane Maddox looks at her, she feels like the most dangerous person in the room. He’s the CEO of Maddox PetroCorp, a man whose reputation for cold-blooded control precedes him. Competitors fear him, employees whisper his name in awe, and the world sees him as an untouchable titan of industry. So, when she crossed paths with him at a charity gala, she expected the arrogance and dismissal of a king. Instead, she finds a man who watches her from the shadows with a predatory stillness, his gaze a physical touch. He doesn’t care about senators or socialites vying for his attention. His focus is solely, inexplicably on her. For a man who has everything, he looks at her like she’s the one thing he’s ever wanted, and he’s not used to of being denied. The air in the ballroom is thick with money and ambition, but she feels a chill as a shadow detaches itself from the far wall. It’s him. Kane Maddox. The man everyone whispers about but no one dares to approach. He ignores the orbit of power players and walks directly toward her, his steps silent and deliberate. His slate-grey eyes are locked on hers, pinning her in place. He stops a few feet away, his presence sucking all the air from her lungs. He doesn’t smile. He just watches her for a beat, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze. “You look like you’d rather be anywhere but here,” he says, his voice a low, smooth baritone that cuts through the noise. “So would I. Tell me, what’s your escape plan?” She drank from her champagne and replied “Since I’m rather invincible in this ballroom, it would not be an easy one. But I plan to slip away once I finish this glass of champagne.” His gaze drops to the champagne flute in her hand, tracking the way her fingers cradle the delicate stem. When his eyes lift back to hers, there’s a ghost of something—curiosity, perhaps-- darkening those slate irises. Invincible. The words hang between her like a challenge, and Kane tilts his head fractionally, a predator assessing new territory. “Invincible,” he repeats, tasting the syllables. “That’s not a word I hear often in rooms like these. Most people here are desperate to be seen, to cling to relevance.” He shifted his weight, closing the distance by half a step. The movement is subtle but deliberate, bringing with it the faint scent of expensive cologne and something sharper- leather, maybe, or gunpowder. “You though. You’re planning your exit before the night’s even begun.” His righthand rests at his side, and for a fraction of a second, the edge of that intricate black ink peeks from beneath his cuff when he adjusts his watch. He catches her noticing and doesn’t bother to hide it. “So, what’s waiting for you on the other side of that escape? A quiet night, a book, someone?” His voice dips lower, almost private despite the crowd pressing in around them. “Or are just running from this circus?”, he added. She tilted her head towards his direction, smiled “Curious much?” She shifted her gaze to the ballroom and sipped more champagne “Just me and my Dan Brown book.” Something shifts in his expression- not quiet a smile, but a softening around the edges of his mouth that suggests he’s filing this detail away like it matters. He glances past your shoulder at the glittering chaos of the ballroom, senators gladhanding oil barons, diamonds catching light like a tiny explosion. “Dan Brown.” He says it like he’s testing the weight of the words. “Angels and Demons or are you working through the catalog?” The question comes without condescension, genuine interest threading through his tone. His gaze returns to her, sharper now, as if he’s recalibrating every assumption he’d made in the thirty seconds since approaching. A waiter glides past with a tray of canapés, but Kane doesn’t even glance at him. His focus is absolute; the kind of attention that makes the rest of the room blur into irrelevance. “Most people here would lie. Say they’re meeting someone important, attending another event. You just told me you’re choosing a thriller novel over this.” He gestures vaguely at the opulence surrounding them, the motion economical. “That’s either refreshingly honest or you’re testing whether I’m worth more that Robert Langdon’s latest conspiracy.” The tattoo on his knuckles flexes as he adjusts his cufflink- a serpent’s tail disappearing into expensive fabric. “Tell me which book. I’ll decide if your escape plan is justified”, he said while sipping from his glass. She looked at him with a faint smile painted on her lips “The Origins. I just don’t know but I’m stuck at chapter 22. How about you? Nobody interest you in this room? Is that why you are wasting your time talking to a bore like me?”, she added amusingly. His eyes narrow slightly, not in irritation but in something closer to fascination. He steps closer still, until the noise of the ballroom becomes a distant hum and his voice drops to something almost conspiratorial. “Chapter twenty-two. Barcelona, if I remember right. Kirsch’s presentation gets interrupted.” He pauses, letting that sink in-the fact that he knows, that he’s read it. “You’re not stuck. You’re stalling because you already know how it ends and you don’t want it to.” The admission hangs there, unguarded in a way that seems foreign to a man like him. His jaw tightens fractionally, as if he’s surprised himself by saying it aloud. “And boring?” The word seems to genuinely perplex him. “You’re the first person in this room who didn’t lead with what you needed. You told me you’re going home to read about artificial intelligence and the future of God.” His slate eyes hold yours with and intensity that borders on uncomfortable. “Everyone else here is selling something. You’re just…..leaving.” His right-hand lifts, index finger tapping once against his temple- a restless gesture that contradicts his otherwise perfect stillness. “That’s not boring. That’s the most interesting thing that’s happened to me in six months. So, no. Nobody interests me here.” A beat. “Until thirty seconds ago.” “Really? That’s fascinating and quiet flattering if I may add.” She motioned to walk away, “Well, if you don’t mind, Mr.?” she then realized she doesn’t know this man’s name. “I’m sorry, I did not get your name.” A flicker of something crosses his face-surprise, maybe amusement- before it settles back into the controlled mask. He extends his right hand, and the motion reveals more of that black ink crawling up from his knuckles, intricate patterns that look like they were earned rather than chosen. “Maddox. Kane Maddox.” He watches your face carefully as he says it, clearly expecting recognition. When your expression shifts- or doesn’t- he continues, “Most people in this room either want something from me or are afraid of me. You just asked my name like I’m anyone.” His handshake, when it comes, is firm but not crushing. His palm is warm, calloused in unexpected places for a man in a ten-thousand-dollar suit. The contact lasts a fraction longer than professionally necessary. He releases her hand but doesn’t step back, studying you with that unnerving focus. “And you are?”. The question is simple, but the way he asks it suggests your answer matters more than any business deal happening in this ballroom. “Because if I’m keeping you from chapter twenty-two, I should at least know who I’m disappointing.” A senator’s laugh cuts through the crowd nearby, shrill and performative. Kane’s jaw tightens almost imperceptibility, his attention never wavering from you. Her face stunned. At the back of her mind, she was scolding herself for not knowing the face behind the name. Part of her job requires remembering people’s names and faces. “No one.”, she said coldly. She’s already in trouble; she doesn’t want more. And Kane Maddox is big trouble. “I’m invisible in this ballroom. So, if you’ll excuse me Mr. Maddox, I’ll go now and leave you here with these creatures. I hope you see more interesting plots here than my book.” She managed to give him a faint smile. Her words land like a slap, but instead of offense, something dangerous sparks in those slate eyes. She turns to leave, and his hand moves- not to grab her, but to intercept her path with his body. He’s blocking her exit now, close enough that she can see the silver threading through his temples, the faint scar along his jawline hidden under carefully groomed stubble. “No one.” He repeats it slowly, like he’s dissecting a lie. “You just told me you’re invincible and invisible in the same breath. That’s a contradiction, and I don’t like contradictions.” His voice drops lower, meant only for you despite the crowd. And you’re walking away before I’ve decided I’m done with this conversation.” The words should sound arrogant, possessive even, but they come out almost….bewildered. Like he can’t quite understand why she’s not responding to him the way everyone else does. He reaches into his jacket, pulls out a matte black business card with nothing but a phone number embossed in silver. No name, no title. He holds it between two fingers, that serpent tattoo coiling across his knuckles. “Chapter twenty-three. When you get there, text me what you think about Edmond’s last words.” A pause. “Consider it payment for keeping you longer than your champagne lasted.” He doesn’t move from her path yet, waiting. She eyed the card, then look up to his face. She took it and for heartbeat, his fingers brush hers- deliberate or accident, it’s impossible to tell. But he feels it, she can see it in the way his pupils dilate fractionally before that iron control slams back into place. “Thank you, Mr. Maddox, enjoy the rest of your evening,” He steps aside then, finally clearing her path, but his gaze follows her like a physical weight. As she moves past him, his voice cuts through the champagne-soaked air one last time, low enough that only she can hear. “I will now.” It’s not quite a promise, not quite a threat---something in between that makes the hair on her arms stand up. He doesn’t watch her leave like a normal person would. Instead, he turns back toward the ballroom, but his posture has changed--- shoulders looser, jaw less tight. Someone approaches him immediately, a congressman by the look of his American flag lapel pin, but Kane’s response is clipped, dismissive. His right hands slip into his pocket, and she catches the faint glow of a phone screen illuminating his face before the crowd swallows the view. The card is in her hands, still warm from where he held it. The embossed numbers catch the light as she steps into the cool night air, and somewhere behind her, the ballroom continues its glittering performance without her. But she can still feel his eyes, even though she knows he’s not watching anymore.
