On New Year's Eve, my husband tossed a year-end review in front of me.

Inside, it listed in detail every contribution I had made to the family over the past year, as well as every mistake.

I skimmed through the document, only to see a bolded line on the final page:

The spouse has consistently failed to meet multiple key metrics. Overall score: below the passing line. Therefore, the spouse will be subject to rank-and-yank.

I snapped my head up.

"Damian, what is this supposed to mean?"

His expression remained perfectly calm.

"Exactly what it says. Sylvia, I think it's time we seriously considered terminating this marriage contract and getting a divorce."

Chapter 1
Termination? My eyes welled up. Three years into our marriage, every year-end, Damian Cross would hand me a performance review. Once it was finished, he would present a "Renewal Contract" for me to sign, signifying the continuation of our marriage. I never imagined that a day would actually come for "termination." My voice trembled as I spoke, "Do you really think you can end our marriage by simply 'terminating the contract'?" Damian frowned slightly. "When I first proposed this concept, didn't you agree? Besides, you were the one who failed in your role as a spouse first. Proposing a termination is both reasonable and within policy." I looked down at the cold, clinical text on the page: Household task completion rate: 3% lower than last year. Effective communication duration: below the 30-minute minimum. Spousal career synergy: low; zero participation in work-related discussions or activities this year... Then, the final line: Core biological performance unmet: Three-year marriage cycle, fertility KPI completion rate: zero. My grip tightened, crumpling the edge of the document. Failed in my role as a spouse? So that's what he called it? "Are you sick of me because I'm getting old? Do you think that since I can't bear children and have no value left to squeeze out, you can just kick me to the curb?" Damian tapped the table with his fingertips. "Calm down, Sylvia Shaw. Data doesn't lie. Look at Chapter 3, Section 2. Last year, my mother was hospitalized twice, and you didn't visit once. When my father had surgery, you didn't contribute to his post-op dietary management at all." He adjusted his glasses, the lenses reflecting cold light. "Sylvia, I hope you realize that as a spouse, this is a serious dereliction of duty." I raised my voice in protest, "When your mother was hospitalized, I was negotiating with the hospital! After your father's surgery, I was busy coordinating everything..." "And?" Damian interrupted, his tone as calm as ever. "Did any of that actually contribute to this family?" I froze. He gave a slight shake of his head. "Marriage is a collaborative system. If your contributions don't fit into that system, they are ineffective labor. Your so-called 'coordination' holds no value for me, nor for the development of this marital unit." Looking at his icy expression, I suddenly felt as though he were a stranger. Was this really the Damian I had loved for seven years? The man I knew used to cook noodles for me when I worked late. He would warm my feet on cold winter nights and run around taking care of my parents whenever they were ill. But now, he looked at me as if he were evaluating a piece of equipment about to be scrapped. I heard a cold laugh escape my own lips. "Fine. Perfect. Since I've been an incompetent wife and am now subject to rank-and-yank. Tell me, Damian, what is your optimization plan?" His expression finally shifted, a glint of satisfaction appearing in his eyes. He pulled out another file and handed it to me. "As the ex-spouse about to be terminated, I believe you are qualified to evaluate this new proposal." I took it, glancing at the bold text printed on the cover: Potential Spouse Compatibility Assessment: Bianca Frost.
