Finding Jo

977 Words
Jane's POV I pour myself another cup of coffee and head straight to my father’s personal library. I need a book for my research, and the library is the only place where I might find it. As I move past the long wooden shelves, I enter the far corner where the books about werewolves are kept. To say we have a rich archive would be an understatement. Our collection spans centuries—histories of different packs, treaties, territorial records, even romance novels based on real stories. I smile in disbelief. We might have more literature written about us than humans do about themselves. My gaze lands on a book titled The Mate Bond. The preface and blurb suggest it delves deeply into the concept of mate bonds and the emotional chaos that follows when a werewolf is about to meet their mate. I don’t know why, but I pick it up anyway. With nearly five books balanced in my arms, I return to my room. I dump them on the study table and look around for my phone, which I finally find lying face down on the floor, switched off. The battery must have died, and I didn’t even realize. I plug it in and decide to read The Mate Bond while it charges. The book starts with describing the different phases a werewolf experiences as their mate draws near. First comes a strange emptiness, then fluctuating energy—bursts of joy followed by gloom. Eventually, as the encounter nears, it becomes unbearable. Restlessness, a gnawing void in the heart, and a desperate need to find the one who can fill it. Damn. These symptoms sound exactly like what Amelia has been feeling lately. I rush to grab my phone. We need to talk immediately. If she really is on the verge of meeting her fated mate while already engaged to another, it could trigger a crisis. Her fiancé is the Beta of the Opal Moon Pack. If things spiral, it might even lead to a pack war. As soon as I power on the phone, I’m hit by a flood of notifications. Nearly fifty messages from Ray and Amelia, and more than twenty missed calls. What the hell? Before I can call back, my phone rings. It’s Amelia. "Hello! What the hell happened? Why are there so many—" "Jo is missing! No one’s seen her. She never made it home!" she screams before I can finish. Shit. If Dad finds out about last night, I’m doomed. "When did you find out she was missing? Do her parents know?" "Thank the Moon Goddess, her parents are out of town. If they were home, and found out, we'd all be screwed." "Where’s Ray?" "She’s with me. We just realized Jo's missing like twenty minutes ago when we all woke up. We’re coming to pick you up. Be ready. We need to find her!" Amelia sounds like she’s preparing for battle. "I’m ready. Let’s go." I toss the book on the bed, grab my jacket, and head out. Just as I reach the gate, Ray and Amelia pull up. I jump into the car. "Wait. How are we going to find her? We don’t even know where to start." "I remember seeing her with some guy last night," Ray says. "Do you know who he was? What he looked like?" "Nope. No clue." Perfect. "It’s okay, girls. We can do this. We are going to rescue our friend and return her safely to our humble abode!" Amelia shouts like a warrior charging into battle. "What the hell, Amelia? Lower your voice. You almost blew out my eardrums," I yell, completely annoyed. "She’s been like this since she woke up," Ray whispers. "Super hyped about everything. I think she’s still tipsy." I frown. I don’t remember her drinking that much last night. Something’s definitely off. "So what's the plan? We're not just going to drive around aimlessly, are we?" "There is no plan," Ray shrugs. "What?! Pull over! We need to figure this out now." I snap. Ray hits the brakes, and both girls turn to look at me, wide-eyed. "Why are you staring at me like that?" "Did you just use your Alpha tone on us?" Ray says, her voice shaky. "What Alpha tone? I don’t even have a damn wolf, remember? Just listen, I have a plan." They nod cautiously. "Most of the wolves who were at the club should be awake by now. We can ask the regulars if they saw Jo. Someone must have noticed something." We drive around asking nearly everyone we can think of, but no luck. For two hours, it’s just dead ends. "I hope she’s alive," Ray mutters. "Jo is dead? Oh Moon Goddess, this can’t be happening. She was just seventeen! Life is so unfair!" Amelia starts sobbing dramatically. Now I’m really worried about her. "Shut up, i***t. She’s not dead! Just get in the car. We’ll find her ourselves," Ray barks. We resume our search, this time more determined. Finally, a glimmer of hope. Someone remembers seeing Jo with a human. Some of them live in the pack temporarily as part of a school exchange program. We race toward the school dorms. Thankfully, being the daughter of the Beta comes with perks. No one questions us at the entrance. One of the admin assistants points us toward the dorm where the exchange students stay. He doesn’t even hesitate to help. I can’t tell if it’s because of my father or because, as everyone says, I’m irresistibly charming. Judging by the way he’s ogling me, I’d say the latter. He even tags along as we check room after room. Finally, on the fifth try, we find her. The door is unlocked. And the sight we walk into is something I know I’ll never forget as long as I live.
