Chapter 1: "The Transfer”
Ryuji Nakamura, a young man who has been confessing his feelings to Mika for nearly nine years, transfers to a new college after being rejected one last time. He is isolated by loneliness and depression and becomes cold and rude, wearing a full mask that conceals his entire face, including his eyes, nose, and mouth.
On the first day of Ryuji's transfer to the new college, we see him preparing to leave his old life behind. He packs his belongings, including a photo of him and Mika from their childhood, which he carefully places in a box.
his emotional struggle as he leaves his former school, friends, and memories behind. The pain of unrequited love has made him cold and distant.
As Ryuji arrives at his new college, he wears a mask that fully conceals his face, and his body language reflects his isolation and emotional turmoil. He enters the classroom, drawing little attention due to his masked appearance, and sits in the back, avoiding eye contact with others.
Yuki: (friendly) Hey there, I'm Yuki. You're new, right?
Ryuji: (cold and distant, muffled by the mask) Yeah, so what?
Yuki: (smiling) Just wanted to say hi and welcome you to the class. If you have any questions or need help finding your way around, feel free to ask.
Ryuji: (reluctantly, still muffled) Thanks, but I don't need any help.
Despite Ryuji's initial resistance, Yuki remains undeterred by his cold demeanor.
Yuki: (warmly) That's okay; we all need help sometimes. It's not easy being the new kid, especially when you're carrying something heavy.
Ryuji: (guarded, still muffled) What do you mean?
Yuki: (empathetic) I can see it in your eyes... or rather, I can't see them. There's pain there, something you're carrying from your past. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but just know that I'm here to listen if you ever want to talk.
Ryuji's mask makes it difficult for Yuki to discern his expression, but she senses the weight of his emotions.
Ryuji: (softly, muffled, with a tinge of bitterness) You wouldn't understand. My past is nothing but a series of rejections and heartache. It's a lonely road, and you'd be better off steering clear.
Ryuji's concealed eyes remain hidden, and the pain in his voice is palpable.
Flashback to Ryuji and Mika's Conversation: a glimpse of Ryuji and Mika sitting together in a park during their childhood. The atmosphere is warm, and their smiles are genuine.Ryuji gathers the courage to confess his feelings to Mika.
Ryuji: (with a hint of vulnerability) Mika, I've been feeling this way for so long. I can't keep it in any longer. I love you.
Mika looks at him with a gentle smile.
Mika: (softly) Ryuji, you know you mean the world to me, right?
Ryuji: (hopeful) Yes, I do.
Mika: (softly) I cherish our friendship more than anything, and I'm scared that if we take that step, we might lose it all.
Ryuji's face falls, and he seems heartbroken by her response. Tears well up in his eyes.
Ryuji: (tearfully) Mika, I... I can't pretend I'm okay with this. It hurts so much.
Mika reaches out and gently wipes away Ryuji's tears.
Mika: (with a tear in her eye) Ryuji, please understand. I never want to hurt you. Let's not lose what we have. We can still be best friends, can't we?
Ryuji: (reluctantly) I understand, Mika. If that's how you feel, I don't want to ruin what we have.
Yuki, undeterred by Ryuji's coldness, continues to sit beside him in the classroom, even though his mask conceals his entire face.
Yuki: (softly) Ryuji, I may not fully understand your pain, but I want to be here for you. We can be friends, and maybe you'll find that sharing your burdens isn't as lonely as you think.
Ryuji, unable to hide his frustration and pain, responds rudely.
Ryuji: (harshly) Get lost.
Yuki, despite being met with Ryuji's harsh response, doesn't give up on trying to reach him.
Yuki: (resolute) Ryuji, I won't give up on you that easily. We're classmates now, and I believe there's more to you than meets the eye, even if I can't see it right now.
Ryuji doesn't respond and instead focuses on his desk, trying to ignore Yuki's presence.
Yuki's determination is unshaken, and she gently places a piece of paper on Ryuji's desk with her contact information.
Yuki: (softly) Whenever you're ready to talk or if you just need a friend, you can reach out to me. I'll be here.
Ryuji remains silent, but he can't help but glance at the piece of paper for a brief moment before averting his gaze.
Yuki then returns to her seat, respecting Ryuji's need for space while silently hoping that he might eventually open up.
It's lunch break, and Ryuji carries his bag to a secluded spot by the riverbank, not too far from the school. The serene sound of flowing water provides a soothing backdrop.
Ryuji sits down, facing away from the school, and glances around to ensure no one is watching. He then carefully removes his mask, revealing his face.
His expression is a mix of vulnerability and weariness as he begins to eat his lunch alone. The scars of his past rejections weigh heavily on his heart.
He occasionally gazes at the river, lost in thought, as memories of Mika and the pain of his unrequited love flood his mind.
Unbeknownst to him, Yuki and her two friends, Hiroshi and Aiko, happen to be passing by the river during their lunch break. Yuki spots Ryuji without his mask, revealing his face for the first time.
Hiroshi: (whispering to Aiko and Yuki) Hey, look over there! Isn't that the new guy, Ryuji Nakamura? He never takes off his mask.
Aiko: (whispering) Yeah, I think it is. What's he doing here by the river without his mask?
Yuki, without realizing it, stares at Ryuji's face, taking in his features. She's struck by his appearance.
Yuki: (softly, to herself) He's... he's actually really cute.
Hiroshi and Aiko exchange surprised glances, noticing Yuki's unexpected reaction.
Hiroshi: (whispering to Aiko) Did you hear that? Yuki thinks he's cute.
Aiko: (whispering) I never thought I'd see the day. But don't tell her; she might get embarrassed.
Yuki regains her composure and continues walking with her friends, leaving Ryuji unaware that they saw his face without the mask.
Ryuji continues to eat his lunch by the riverbank, lost in his thoughts, unaware that Yuki and her friends had seen his face without the mask.
Yuki, Hiroshi, and Aiko continue their walk, with Yuki trying to hide her surprise and newfound perception of Ryuji.
Hiroshi: (whispering) So, what did you think of Ryuji without the mask?
Yuki: (blushing slightly) It was just a surprise, that's all. I mean, it's not like I—
Aiko: (teasingly) Oh come on, Yuki. You can't deny that you found him cute.
Yuki blushes even more, embarrassed by her friends' teasing.
Yuki: (defensive) I-I didn't say that! Let's just drop it.
Her friends share a knowing look, but they respect her wishes and continue their lunch break.
Ryuji finishes his lunch and, still facing away from the school, puts his mask back on, concealing his face once more.
He stands up and prepares to head back to class, the weight of his unrequited love and past rejections pressing on him as he walks away from the riverbank.
The final bell rings, signaling the end of the school day. Students begin to pack their belongings and head home.
Yuki gathers her courage and approaches Ryuji at his desk, her two friends watching from a distance.
Yuki: (softly) Ryuji, I know you wanted me to get lost earlier, but I just wanted to say that you don't have to be alone all the time.
Ryuji looks at Yuki, his eyes hidden behind the mask, but there's a hint of curiosity in his gaze.
Ryuji: (guarded) What are you getting at?
Ryuji looks at Yuki, his eyes hidden behind the mask, but there's a hint of curiosity in his gaze.
Ryuji: (coldly) I've managed just fine on my own.
Yuki: (gentle) I can see that you're carrying a heavy burden, and it's not easy. Friends can make a difference, even if it's just to share a few words or a smile.
Ryuji's gaze remains fixed on Yuki, his mask concealing his emotions.
Yuki: (smiling) If you ever decide you want to talk or even just sit in silence with someone, I'll be here. No pressure, okay?
Ryuji, though still distant, responds with a dismissive noise.
Ryuji: (dismissive noise) Hmph.
Yuki leaves a small note with her contact information on Ryuji's desk and walks away, rejoining her friends, who are watching her with encouraging smiles.
Ryuji, still wearing his mask, observes Yuki and her friends leaving. He remains distant, torn between his desire for solitude and the unexpected encounter with Yuki.
As evening descends, Ryuji eventually gathers his things and leaves the school, walking towards his lonely apartment.
Yuki, at home, sits at her desk and contemplates the encounter with Ryuji. She wonders if she can break through his emotional barriers and offer him the friendship he seems to resist.
Ryuji, in his small apartment, removes his mask once more. He stares at it for a moment, as if it's a barrier between him and the world.
