Unexpected Betrayal
"Do you think I care if you get married tomorrow or not? Work is work, you can only take leave on your wedding day, understand?"
That's how Mr. Theodore, the assistant restaurant manager, nagged me when I wanted to ask for a day off to prepare for my wedding. I still have to check the building and my wedding dress before the blessing tomorrow morning, but my boss, who thinks time and money are everything, doesn't care at all. That's why late at night like this, I was still mopping the floor of the restaurant that had just closed.
"You can't pass by here, I've just mopped it," I ran to Rose, one of my coworkers.
Rose showed me the menu book that was usually kept at the restaurant's reception desk. '"I have to keep this in its place. If I can't walk here, where should I walk, you i***t?"
"Shouldn't that menu book not go anywhere and stay where it is? The floor is already clean, if you walk here the floor will definitely get dirty."
Rose tossed her hair as she said, "It's none of my business."
I couldn't help but grasp the mop stick tightly as I watched Rose casually walk while swaying her hips on the still wet white marble floor. Sure enough, her shoes left brownish traces as if she had just come out of the mud. To make it clear that she had intentionally soiled the floor that I had cleaned, she wandered around a few places that were not on her intended path.
"Oops, gosh, the floor got dirty again," Rose said after she had almost soiled half of the dine-in room. "Happy re-cleaning," she continued while looking at me with a triumphant face.
Had I not been conserving my energy because tomorrow was going to be so tiring, I would have tried to confront her. I cleaned the floor again, even though Mr. Theodore scolded me for being slow in the end. However, I chose to apologize to him and not complain about Rose's actions because she was his favorite employee. And everyone knows why she became his favorite one.
After an exhausting night, I returned to the apartment I shared with Kyle. I smiled widely at the thought that the man I was going to marry was waiting for me there. When I opened the door and entered, the lights in the living room weren't on. When I pressed the light switch, I saw the red lace panties and bra lying on the floor along with Kyle's panties.
I picked up the panties and looked at them carefully. "This isn't mine."
Suddenly a sighing sound came from the direction of the room whose door was open.
"Oh, my f*cking God. Ah, Babe, faster. Uhmm, I love it."
Does Kyle watch adult movies? I thought that before I peeked in the room. My world seemed to collapse instantly when I saw Kyle and Jessica, my friend, not wearing a single thread on the bed. Kyle kept pumping furiously, making Jessica sigh with pleasure. And every sigh was like a dagger piercing my heart.
"You're so good, my dear," Kyle praised.
"Better than Aurel?"
"Don't mention that disgusting woman's name, my dear. It Will turn me off."
They both chuckled and continued their tussle on the bed. Praising each other's prowess and performance. Occasionally, they would say harsh words when they felt a rush of pleasure that they could not express in words.
While walking away from the room, I typed a message to Kyle.
[Tonight I'm staying at my friend's house. We'll meet tomorrow at the aisle. I love you]
*.*.*.
Stupidly, after catching Kyle in the act, instead of canceling our wedding, I stood alone in front of the hotel ballroom door wearing my wedding dress. I put on a thick face while holding a bouquet of white roses and baby's breath that symbolizes loyalty and true love. Nonsense, I was going to marry a man who didn't deserve to be associated with love and loyalty.
I knew that I should have canceled our wedding, but I had already spent all my savings to pay for this star hotel ballroom and expensive wedding dress. At the very least, I should enjoy the day where I become a queen for one day. After that, I'll think of a way to get a divorce and ask Kyle to compensate me for all the expenses I've incurred so far. I refuse to lose, it's enough that my heart has been hurt.
I had been standing at the door for five minutes, but there had been no notice of when I could enter and walk down the aisle to my waiting groom. I took the initiative to open the large door in front of me. Instantly, the people in the room turned to look at me with looks of astonishment.
"Why is that woman here?"
"How embarrassing! She and Kyle have broken up."
"Gosh, she came wearing the same wedding dress as Jessica? She must think she's prettier, when she's so ugly in that dress."
"She must have come to ruin Kyle and Jessica's wedding. She's a snake woman!"
"I heard that she's been using Kyle, who loves her so much. It's a good thing Kyle came to his senses and chose to marry the more sincere Jessica."
All of the bads words meant nothing compared to what I witnessed as Kyle, who was wearing a black tuxedo of my choice, stood before Jessica, who was wearing the exact same dress as mine, on the aisle that was supposed to be mine.
"And now I announce you as a husband and a wife. You may kiss your bride."
Kyle slowly brought his face closer to Jessica's. Their lips met and crushed each other as if they didn't care about the people clapping and whistling in joy for the sacred vows that the traitorous couple had just made. And reality hit me again, showing that all this time I was just a stupid woman who was constantly being played.
Last night's questions after catching them making love floated again in my mind; about when they had been in a relationship behind my back, how could they be together while I was in the middle.
"Ouch!" I screeched as my hand was suddenly pulled forcefully.
"Come here, come with me!" hissed Aunt Merry, Kyle's mother, who pulled me out of the hotel ballroom.
Aunt Merry slammed my hand roughly after the door behind us closed. "What do you mean you came to Kyle and Jessica's wedding in a wedding dress? Did you come to screw up?"
"Shouldn't I be asking why Jessica is standing with Kyle? Me, I'm the one who should be married to Kyle."
"Huh, what nonsense are you saying again. Kyle is a neurologist who works at a reputable hospital. You think with his background, he's worthy of a poor girl like you? He's out of your league!"
I smiled bitterly at Aunt Merry's insult. "It was this poor girl who worked day and night to help pay for Kyle's tuition. Have you forgotten? And this wedding ballroom, who do you think paid for it? Me, I paid for it, but your ignorant son betrayed me!"
Aunt Merry's hard slap landed on my cheek. "Watch what you say!"
I immediately held my cheek that was stinging. It hurt, but the pain of being betrayed by people I trusted disguised the pain.
"Are you saying that Kyle was able to go to college because of you? Are you out of your mind? And this wedding was very clearly paid for by Kyle using his money, I myself accompanied him to pay in person. You're the one who's been using my son all this time. You better get out of here before I call security to drag you away."
I lowered my hand from my cheek and clenched it tightly. It was my fault for letting Kyle take care of our wedding venue by himself. Even if I wanted to sue, I had no proof.
"Why are you still standing here? Hurry up and leave!" shouted Aunt Merry.
I gave Aunt Merry a sharp look as I tossed the bouquet of flowers I was holding, then removed the veil that was on my head right in front of her.
"Tell your precious son that one day he'll regret doing this to me," I said to Aunt Merry before I walked away.
I could hear Aunt Merry swearing at me, but I chose to continue my steps to get away from that place.
As I walked away from the ballroom, the sting of betrayal mingled with the pain in my heart, but I refused to let the tears fall. I must not show weakness, not now, not ever. With every step, the weight of the world seemed to press down on my shoulders, threatening to crush me under its unforgiving weight.
Lost in my thoughts, I barely noticed the sound of approaching footsteps until a strong hand suddenly grabbed mine, pulling me out of my reverie. Startled, I looked up and found myself face-to-face with a stranger. A man whose face was like a maestro's sculpture, reminding me of a very handsome role actor. And looking at him made me forget my heartache for a moment.
"Hey, are you okay?" he asked, his voice soft yet firm.
I nodded, unable to find the words to express the turmoil raging inside me. But before I could answer, he spoke again, his words making me gasp in shock.
"I've been waiting for you for an hour," he said, his gaze unwavering as he looked into my eyes. "Today is our wedding day, guests have been waiting since earlier."
Confusion swirled through my mind as I struggled to understand his words. Today was indeed my wedding day, but not with a man I had never met before.
